Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 3) - The Biggest Loser

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

I’m on the record as saying:
1. Nicks deserved his 2 year extension

2. He has his players playing for him, which is a vote of confidence in his game plan :whitecheck:

He’s been instrumental in player retention, plus attracting new players :whitecheck:

3. I’ve also said the rebuild was complete, and 2025 was a year in which Nicks has to have the side play finals …… close enough won’t be good enough

This i’ve posted several times, well b4 trade and draft period
That’s fair enough, but my comment was directed at those who are telling us we should be supportive of nicks and are wrong to think he’s no good.
The results suggest otherwise.

You can have a premiership team inheriting a new Coach ....you can't say that Coach is a good coach, because he's inherited a team built by another

I get what you're saying ....results are the final determinant ....something most would agree

However, I'll continue to push the POV that the 2nd youngest and least experienced list, cannot recover from key injuries, to the same degree as a SYD, BRIS, and even COLL

The fact COLL with one of the oldest lists, couldn't recover from key injuries last season ......is a huge tick in supporting my POV

I'm expecting HAW to struggle a bit in 2025 ......hunter becomes the hunted ....does anyone truly believe their rebuild is complete ?
Will that mean Sam Mitchell isn't a good coach ?

HAW lost the first 5 games last season ....if you follow all Clubs closely, you'll realise HAW were questioned on their rebuild ....did they strip back too hard ...the coach was questioned
Then all of a sudden Day is back, and a few components fell into place ....and suddenly the narrative is flipped on it's ear

Longmuir was hailed as an inspired re-signing at the mid-point of last season ......today, he's under real pressure, because FREO were not rebuilding, they were quite mature .....and so the Coach rightly becomes the focus

Just wondering at which point we are allowed to be unhappy with Nicks?
Do we have to wait for him to be the worst coach in the history of the afl or just our club?
I need a number thanks, we are at 5 years and counting.
He’s heading dangerously close to wasting the prime years of our guns.
I’m unhappy with him now and the only thing that will turn it around is a finals win. I gave him the benefit of the doubt last year but he lost me this year. But let me say this… there is nothing I’d like to be more wrong about! I hope he proves us all wrong!

I think 99% of us would be estatic if he turns it around.

Such progress. From 2021

A lot of our coaches have reached this point where turnovers start to hurt us.

Often they 'fix it' by getting us to choose safer, shorter, wider options and move the ball with more care (ie slowly). Obviously this sort of courage-free bedwetting leads to disaster but it is gold for slowly chip across the field merchants like Kelly.

We need Nicks to accept that turnovers will happen, especially with a young team. Continue to choose aggressive options, continue to try to move the ball quickly, use the corridor where possible, continue (start?) to pick players who have above average foot skills. Because that is a game plan that can lead somewhere.

A safe, cautious approach will lead nowhere.

This time the lesson will sink in

Exactly. If he gets us into finals this year, and we win an elimination or something I'll be on board.
But also need to strengthen the squad again over the offseason to get into that challenging group.

I think it’s too late to build a challenging group from here. The top end draft picks are done, so unless it’s FA acquisitions, we’re done with getting new high end talent. We’ve done what we’ve always done, built a bottom of the top 8 list with depth cover to maximise our finals probability. We’re set on our next decade of ‘make the 8 and anything can happen’ malaise.

Won’t change until a complete gutting of the club from board to boot studder occurs. The same types keep appointing the same types who appoint the same types.

Outstanding. It’s why posters applauding the latest training report referring to crisp ball movement is such a laugh. There’s a report from almost exactly 12 months ago talking about how fast ball movement was. The likelihood this isn’t an embedded philosophy is slim, but it seems that a good portion of posters have totally wiped every single year of us playing under the current coaching group.

Ahh it's Redemption Arc time again.

Will I fall for it this time around, will it take another excuse laden season for me to see that the decent stuff is the outlier, probably.

I like the potential of our list, but unlike Wayne, I will not fall for the could-be nature of our current predicament.

Time for EVERYONE to put the rubber to the road has well and truly sailed past. We are in the red-zone and nothing short of an exemplary return to competing for the actual premiership will turn my head this time around.

Count me in the "not going to believe until I see it actually happening in front of me" category.
