Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 3) - The Biggest Loser

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

That reminds me of another team I know, who are also deluded enough to lean on excuses like injuries for systematic failures.

Good teams do not look for excuses to address problems, they look for solutions.

I’d rather we had better.
Of course. Fact remains we are stuck with him for now. I for one WANT him to succeed. So until the coach is changed, I want them and him to do things that will help him succeed. It's pretty simple really. No point wasting energy on wanting him gone. He's not going to be gone unless (until) he buggers up this year. But if he COULD turn it around... I'd be thrilled to bits!

Oh come on Jenny, the crap game plan was the MAIN reason our season was cooked in the 1st month.

Suggesting otherwise is sticking your head in the sand!

Feel free to list all out injuries in the 1st month & compare to other clubs who also had injuries.

It's this reinventing the truth that doesn't help us fix issues going forward.

Why do you think the club brought in Davis?
Clubs can turn it around after a slow start... we've seen it happen in fact. I'm not arguing with you that the slow start didn't contribute to our shitty season, but so too did the injuries. It wasn't just the first four weeks that did it. That's all I'm arguing.

Pitty Sando didn’t get the same treatment after Baileys death
Apparently Sando's off field performance is the only reason he was sacked. Can't have coaches pulling those kinds of stunts. So, no, the same treatment couldn't apply in this situation.

He's not exactly the messiah of footballing knowledge though...
Kings knowledge though is 20 x anyone on footy forums, who have never stepped into an AFL club

He’ll, they can’t even get to training …. but they still know more than King 🤣

So because our defenders were missing we went with an ultra defensive game plan yeah?
Thilthorpe got injured 14 days before our first round, not enough time to change our game plan because of it.
Less not make things up.

What defenders were missing and I hope no-one says Murray?

We lost him the previous year with 5 rounds to go. We adjusted then and won 3 of the last 5 plus losing to Brisbane and Sydney by less than a kick.

The problem is Nicks overcompensated and screwed our season up.

So you’re back! Going to cover off your critical posts on Nicks coaching or you hoping they will go away? I can quote them again for you if you like.

On a serious note, for someone who has such a high value of their own football opinions, explain how you’ve gone from bagging his change of gameplan, to ignoring that and now blaming our shit start on injuries and dismissing a fundamental change in our gameplan as all coaches makes tweaks every 6 weeks.

He wasn’t talking about a tweak though.
He said every 6 weeks they change it.
Tweaks are weekly.
Tweaks often occur during games too.

I think Brisbane were one of a very few teams to make the finals after a 0-4 start.

Our season was sadly cooked after our 1st month & i said so at the time.

Particularly when we are not a top team, who would have a better ability to recover.

Yeah, nah!

Game plans are not overhauled every 6 weeks no matter how many times you or David King say it.

Yeah, nah!

Especially given Wayne’s description is tweaks ie coaching, not a fundamental change like he criticised Nicks for when he said he went “rogue bonkers”.

It’s like Wayne thinks he’s posting under an alias and not realised he’s using the same account and his old posts are there for us all to see.

It’s very odd behaviour.

So can you please outline our game plan for 2024 …… simple for you, given you have stated it hasn’t changed

But not only did they make finals and win the flag, they lost 4 best 22 players thru ACLs - Gardiner, McCarthy, Coleman and Doedee.

Hawks also made finals and look at their best 22 losses for the year.

IIRC my understanding is that the Lions team was cooked earlier in the season as a byproduct of what happened off field during summer. So not necessarily due to game plan, skillset or player availability?

EDIT

Football club figures have repeatedly denied rumours there is a rift in the dressing room following reports a WhatsApp group chat shared by some players, which detailed what the holidaying group were getting up to in the United States, was seen by one player’s partner.

Look at Richmond, remember when Wayne used injuries and 5 day break as an excuse to lose to Richmond?

We were cooked because we were missing easy shots and not setting up good looks going inside 50. Was 100% an execution issue.

The 'off-field' stuff was opportunistic timing from McClure to drop an irrelevant story but link it spuriously to performance.

lol, that’s not a coach who expected to finish bottom.

Seek the contest, yeah by pushing Murphy up around the ball, genius.
Prioritise others, except me, I’ll blame the players when we lose.
Simple game plan, until I change it.
Defence leads to fast attacking play, until I tell the players to play kick to kick and move the ball slowly.
Experienced mids but you’ll see some young players like McHenry, never once played midfield, now delisted.

The bloke was a fraud from day 1.

Where’s this team he’s talking about
