Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

Couple of issues with this.

1. We ended up being 2 wins and considerable percentage from making the finals in 2019. As a club we were on a steady decline from 15 wins in 2017 to 12 wins in 2018 to 10 wins in 2019.

2. We lost more than just Greenwood and Keath. We also lost Betts (21) and Atkins (20) who were best 22 in 2019. Plus losing vets that were a key part of our Grand Final team 2 years prior in (Jenkins , Jacobs, Douglas). These losses are cumulative - especially considering we had already lost Cameron, Lever and McGovern.

Nicks walked into one of the worst situations possible. Fractured playing group and a gutted list. The issue is that as a club we have not been publicly realistic about where we are at. I don't think Clarkson would have done anything with our list in 2020.

That being said - we are now 3 years into the Nicks experiment and I think it would be in everyones best interest to get rid of him this offseason.

Betts was cooked and Atkins we didn’t lose till end of the spoon year. Sauce and Dougie were cooked/retired, then not playing improved the 22. JJ the only player that might have made the 22 on output alone. Your names don’t make it a crash and burn set of list changes. More like moving on dead wood for an immediate uplift in impact. Had we kept Dsice, Dougie and Betts and played them, we’d have been worse.

I don't know about Betts. He kicked 37 goals and was 15th in the Coleman race for 2019. Losing that in 2020 was a big deal for Nicks and the squad - especially considering the positive impact he had on the playing group. Point made on Atkins.

Just looking at the difference between the 2017 Squad and what Nicks inherited at the end of 2019 - how can you not give him a mulligan to start?

Missing: Douglas, Cameron, Otten, Lever, Greenwood, Betts, Jenkins plus key future players in Keath and McGovern.

Then after the wooden spoon he loses Brad Crouch, Hartigan, Atkins, Knight.

Its pretty unfair on poor old Nicks.

Can't judge a coach that inherited a list that was 1 win from finals that lost Keath and Greenwood as best 22 players and then drove that group to the spoon. Are you serious? You can't just give him a mulligan for coaching us to a spoon after losing not a single player of note.

The same side that was 4th after round 14 and finished 11th, 2 wins out of the 8 and managed to only beat GC (who got pick one priority) and St Kilda in the last 9 games. Who then cleared out Betts (37.21 - second highest scorer) Jenkins (22 - third highest scorer) as well as Keath, Greenwood
Nicks got to catch the falling knife - our squad had already fallen off the cliff

We also stepped into Covid with a new coach and game plan

I don’t think Nicks will be our long term coach - hopefully surprises us - but I understand why the club has given him until 2024. I would expect him to depart between the end of next season and the following years bye if we haven’t seen ladder progress

Development needs some stability - the players appear to be invested with him - and a short term extension made sense

Agreed - as long as you have a list of ready to go rookies to come in and replace them. And we are aware that our drafting hasn’t been good for a very long time. Once the top end of our squad aged and fell away we had nothing coming through underneath

Nicks did not come into our club thinking the cupboard was bare, or that we were beginning an incredibly deep, full-blown, car crash rebuild.

I don’t know what caused the invention of this new narrative:

October 16, 2019

With the Crows undergoing a rejuvenation of their playing list, Nicks assured a passionate supporter base they could be proud of how their Club approaches games in 2020.

For our supporters I can guarantee in what you will see, you'll go away from our games proud of the way the guys have gone about it,” he said.
“It's not so much about the win-loss initially, it'll be more about, ‘look guys, how are we playing our footy?’
“The result will look after itself if our guys are getting some of that right.”

No mention of full, deep rebuild anywhere, not even a hint

But here is Steven Trigg comparing Nicks to Brendan Bolton!!!

Too soon huh? 🤔

Former Adelaide and Carlton chief executive Steven Trigg said the Crows' coaching role was "an extraordinarily pressurised role" because of the focus in South Australia on the team.
He was on panels that picked three of the Crows' coaches and one of Carlton's, Brendon Bolton in 2015.
"We [Carlton] needed a coach who could really teach, communicate and drive culture and I think that's probably what the Crows are looking for at the moment and if it's Matthew Nicks I'm sure that is the set of qualities they're looking for," he said ahead of the announcement.

the irony is that Nicks hasn’t been under pressure, he’s had a free ride

Even if we were planning a full, deep rebuild, would the club have ever admitted they were doing this?

That is blindly more time when it’s not based on anything

In fact that is the definition of blindly more time
Sometimes I wonder if you even read what you are responding to. You can disagree with it but the poster clearly outlined the rationale for 2023 being a reasonable timeline.
