That number still seems ridiculous to me. He's a good AFL player but that's top 5 at your club money for a mid/wing.
He will be top 5 at the club during his next contract though (thanks to retirements).

I'll rephrase, that's top 5 player at top 4 side type money. I'm actually staggered you think that's a reasonable amount to be paying Holmes. Maybe Cats fans are just huge on him but paying him 1m even in new money seems a great way to absolutely butcher your cap. Maybe North can throw him that much because they have unlimited capspace for a few yearsName 5 better who will still be there by end of that contract.
Dangerfield
Hawkins
Cameron
Duncan
Guthrie
Blitz
Stewart?

My opinion is a bit out of line with most other cats fans on this one.I'll rephrase, that's top 5 player at top 4 side type money. I doubt that's how Cats operate and I think you need to be bad for a while to have that much room. I doubt you guys are bad for a while. My opinion is a bit out of line with most other cats fans on this one.
I would have thought top 5 players at bottom 4 sides would get paid better. Because who else you spending that on?
I think a club like Geelong can find much better uses of $1m in salary cap (and the draft picks that come with trading him) then spending it on Holmes. If he wants that much (and maybe I'm really underrating him compared to a lot of Cats supporters), wish him well and take the club offering that much to the cleanersIt's not reasonable but we might have to pay it. With the new CBA it is double the basic salary FYI.
We probably have more cap space opening up than North.

Seems like Holmes and his Manager see a way to make bank - good on them, he would need an AA year to be worth that much money IMO and I dont see that happening. There's always something you can do with cap rather than overpay, like frontloading to make crazy amounts of room later. We only need to be bad for this year, to have that much room.
Danger, Duncan, Tuohy, Rohan, Stanley, Parfitt, Bews, all possibly gone this year.
Put that on top of Selwood and Smith last year, and it's a lot of retirements with not a whole lot of superstars getting paid besides Stewart and Cameron, and maybe Blics. Guthrie possibly retires in 2025, and we're talking close to 5 MIL out of the cap in 3 years.
We're about to have a lottt of room, come end of this year and next. Paying Holmes that amount if he has a year worthy of it, doesn't seem that outlandish when you consider who we might have left - and how young most of the list will be.

Geelong seemed to have a history of paying players what their worth or unders, never over, regardless of the cap situation. Happy for your club to join us pleb clubs on overpaying talent

This might be the first time in a very long time Geelong might have to pay big $ to keep a player.
The incentive to stay always outweighed the prospect of leaving. So players were staying and coming accross for unders.
But now the side isn't as strong anymore, so it's not quite so advantageous.
I think Holmes will ask for a $ contract equal to those being offered.
You know he's best mates with Henry right? With the way your mob acted with him I can't see Ollie selling the Pies to Max anytime soon.Oh I hope he wants to come to Collingwood, as I remember the fun had when Mummy Henry missed his bed.
A future second should get the job done.
LOL.a great way to absolutely butcher your cap.
Don't think the dollars will be an issue. We have like 3-4 significant players contracted for next yearThis might be the first time in a very long time Geelong might have to pay big $ to keep a player.

Rumour is cats offer to Bailey is north of thatWell if the Cats offer B Smith say $900k as the benchmark where does that leave Homes worth?
Would need to be at least similar?
Cap bump + us having acres of cap space in the next couple years calms some of the concerns regarding Smith & Holmes' paypackets.Rumour is cats offer to Bailey is north of that
Might work for Hawkins. But most players would prefer to be paid in money than meat trays.LOL.
Geelong butchering its cap.
LOL.
No one deserves to read this garbage.Might work for Hawkins. But most players would prefer to be paid in money than meat trays.
the old under the table dealMight work for Hawkins. But most players would prefer to be paid in money than meat trays.
