If that's the case, let's hope Hawthorn finish 18th.

Freo aren't going to trade Pick 1 for McGovern. He's good, but not Pick 1 good.

Also, if Fyfe does go to St Kilda I expect it will be as a FA. Yes, Freo could match, but I doubt they will if the cost is $1.5m/season.

I think the matching is more about forcing a trade that will net you something better than the compensation pick, not trying to force the player to stay when he doesn't want to. Similar to us with Dangerfield, although that never got to the point of having to formally match it, they just bypassed that process and went straight to the trade part.

Except if they match then Fyfe can simply take the Freo contract. So Freo have to be certain that they're willing to pay that amount if they decide to match.

In the Dangerfield situation Geelong could not afford to put in a Godfather $1m+ offer, so they were forced to trade for him. Putting up a $800k/year offer would have been a waste of time as the Crows would have matched it without blinking (and likely had offered Danger more than $800k/year in previous offers).

That's true, but I guess there are a couple of assumptions that could affect this one way or the other. One is that Freo are willing to match the $1.5m that St Kilda are supposedly offering. Don't rule that out too soon, given that they haven't finalized the new player pay deal. $1.5m may be manageable for a superstar player - it's not like there are a whole lot of other superstars on Freo's list demanding similar kind of dollars.

The other assumption is that it's actually about the money. If Fyfe is really just auctioning himself off to the highest bidder (and Freo are willing to match that bid), then he may well re-sign with Freo well before the end of the year once the player deal is signed off. But if money isn't the issue, and Fyfe just wants out even if Freo can match the salary, then it's still a Dangerfield situation where he's leaving but they can negotiate for something better than the compensation pick they'd otherwise get.

If freo or the eagles try or succeed in lure him away for us. They should be thinking it will cost them a lot. Top 10 pick plus more. Id hatw to lose him as we have invested in him and took a chance on him.
He shouldn't be looking anyway as we could be embarking on a golden era at the club. Money can come later as he is still and has many years left in him.
If we keep our list together for then next 3 to 4 years, i believe we could win a flag or 2 with our talent.

It's a joke Jenny. Tippett went to Sydney, not "home" to Qld.
Yes but Tippett wasn't from SA. He was going home (wherever the **** that was). Fyfe isn't a similar situation. If you are going to make a joke... make sure it's actually funny! ;)

That was the thing. Tippett was a Queenslander. But he said at the time that going to Sydney was "going home" because he lived there until he was like 2 years old or something. When the fact was that he was whoring himself out to the highest bidder and just covering it up with a ridiculous claim of "going home".

Never mind, the moment has gone :p

1. I didn't make the joke.
2. The joke was that Tippett said he wanted to go back "home" and then conveniently remembered that he was born in NSW and lived there until he was about 18 months old (or something like that), so NSW was therefore his "home", despite the fact that he'd lived in Qld the vast majority of his life and all his family was in Qld.

It's gone suspiciously quiet on the Gov rumors... but I suppose Jurnos hate writing about players looking to love clubs

But as an upgrade from pick 16-18 to pick 1 or 2... He is worth that

You're implying there's no story anymore and he's staying?

Could maybe also throw in picks of ours from 2018 to get it over the line in such a deal.

If Mcgovern wants to return home, the smart thing to do would be to sign a 2-3 deal with the crows whilst we are in a window, then as Freo begin to rise up the ladder again go to them. I expect freo to probably end about 13th with pick 5-ish which would be overs for Mcgovern. If we could send him to Freo with our 2nd for pick 5 then we would go into the draft:
-Pick 5
-Pick 18
-Edwards

Could set us up with a few good players that will be ready when Sloane, Jenkins & Tex are winding down. Ideally we keep Mcgovern for the next 10years and he takes Jenkins or Tex's spot eventually, though. Good chance any KPD we take in the draft won't be as good.

Oh look, its Nostradamus.
My post was in response to the Dockers having cap space if Fyfe leaves.

They won't know if Fyfe is leaving until just before trade week. So them having cap space isn't overly relevant to us resigning McGovern as, if he hasn't re-signed by that point he's going one way or another.

I don't think he is. There is a world of difference between pick 16-18 and pick 1-2.

The average number of games played for a pick 1-2 is miles higher than the average number of games played for a pick 16-18.

Even the average pick 1's tend to be pretty decent. The average 16-18's can play a handful of games and then get delisted.

Well stuff it, we play hard ball and try and extract that. Chuck in a second if we need.

But if we managed to land a bull like Fogarty, who can play as a big mid and medium forward/back, we would potentially have better team balance.
