Paying Sam Smith to put on a show for a bunch of influencers is so ****ing SA. State Bank, satellite cities, MFP, biotech, nanotech, defence contractors. Show the SA gov a bag of magic economic beans and they'll snap your hand off.

happy season 4 GIF

Hahah! You ain’t getting me clicking you sneaky ****er Sam!

So apparently Sam Smith's Australian tour organisers approached ALL state governments to bid to host the official launch of his 2023 Australian tour (which won't be taking place until October).

The tour organisers (Frontier Touring) set the terms of the launch - that it would be strictly invitation only with the invitation list set by Frontier Touring and aimed at key media influencers (and competition winners) to maximise promotion of the tour and the launch venue.

This is the new approach concert tour organisations use to get more $$$ for themselves and their clients and tourist bodies the world over are apparently happy to do it because they reckon it gives them a global big spending youth audience to market their state/country as a tourist venue. So expect to see more of this BS.

The questions about whether this represents a good use of taxpayers money and why all the secrecy still remains imho. The fact it is a bidding war between states makes it even worse - that benefits the artist and their organisers and NOT us, the taxpayers.

Adelaide hardly rated a mention in his global launch page btw.

Gudinski would be proud of who has ever taken over from him at Frontier Touring and pulled this off.

This is straight out of his play book to give his mates and those who sees as heavyweights, the prime tickets/seats/positions at a show.

What I hate with this BS is the lack of transparency.

If it's such a great deal for SA then share the numbers about how many taxpayer dollars were spent and the business case that shows that it will deliver the benefits claimed.

And enough of this multiplier modelling BS that shows inflated returns. I used to work with these Cost Benefit - Input/Output models and they are full of holes and used by marketing spivs to show inflated returns to leverage money from governments. Spending $1m of taxpayers money on digging a huge hole and filling it in will deliver investment and jobs as well - but is it a worthwhile investment when there are other things like schools, roads, hospitals etc. are crying out for that investment?

The whole idea of spending taxpayers money to get a performer here to 'put SA tourism on the map' who wouldn't come here unless he was handed a paper bag filled with taxpayer dosh is friggin' laughable. And paying a few hundred 'influencers' and hangers on to attend his show and eat and drink on the SA taxpayers tab is equally obscene. I know all governments do it but it stinks - a lazy marketing stunt using someone else's money. And these things NEVER get evaluated to see if they actually delivered the benefits claimed.

On the weekend the NY Times had an article in its weekend magazine on 52 places to travel in the world in 2023 - and Kangaroo Island made it on the list at number 7 (the only other Australian location was Uluru). That little article will reach a far great worldwide audience than some influencer event with a singer who had to be friggin paid to be here. And guess what - the NY Times article cost SA taxpayers nothing/zilch. Heck Tourism SA and the SA Premier didn't even know about it until AFTER it was published.

They never release the modelling and never release the calculation of the net benefits say 6 months after they pay for something.

Correct me if I wrong, but I believe they still haven't released how much Rann paid for Lance Armstrong to race in 2 TDU's.

The cheating prick however did give good value for money because it was his comeback race and the world's media were very interested in his return, especially those at the extreme ends in the media, the bigs fanbois and the ones who knew he was a cheat.

No surprise re KI topping the pops so to speak re an Oz tourist destination. For 20 odd years they have been making top 5 and top 10 Oz and world destination lists, be it by travel guide writers or surveys of travellers. I remember living in Sydney and telling people how high it rated and how surprised people were.

Malinauskas has said the Tourism Dept will be undertaking a full cost benefit assessment of the Sam Smith launch spending.

This will not be an 'independent' analysis of course (the auditor general's Dept that reports to Parliament and not the govt of the day has the expertise and independence to do that) but will be undertaken by a firm contracted and paid for by the Tourism Dept (that proposed the spending in the first place) using terms of reference set by the Dept./Govt itself. What a sham.

I know a couple of SA university consultancy units that undertake this work and are more than happy to sell their independence to get on this evaluation money train.

EDIT: I'm obviously not in the target market for Sam Smith. Perhaps someone who is could post some of his (or other influencers) links promoting Adelaide following his visit here. I've had a quick squiz at his instagram feed and this one of him at Cleland is all I could find:

Theo is such a grub.

His ‘Brad Ebert opens up like a packet of chips’ tweet in defence of Sloane’s head high hit was one of the all-time distasteful takes.

He may have that Failed-Western Australian-Trading-As-An-SA-Based-Arselicker-Trait™ as pioneered by Stephen Rowe.

Lol Rowe was a West Aussie? I never knew.

Sort of...

Rowe spent his first five years in the Redlegs heartland before his father, a West Australian, shifted his family to Wagin, a sheep and wheat town 225km southeast of Perth, population 1400.

There, the Rowe clan built a family business specialising in dried pet and stock pellets.

“We make dog food, how good is that?” he says. “We used to eat it as kids. Before you add all the meat meal and proteins, it comes out as puffed wheat so we’d have that warm for breakfast. So the big joke in our town was ‘Oh, there’s the Rowes, they eat dog food’. And we bloody did!”

Rowe is a nuff but he's at least honest about being a nuff and never tries to hide his bias. Doropoulos types are worse, utter sleazeballs with all the objectivity of Hitler picking the German Olympic team who try to play serious balanced journalist.

Following yesterday's headlines the Murdoch Press devotes two full pages of glorious colour to the spat between Pup Clarke and Pup's girlfriend as well as some altercation between Clarke and Karl Stepanovich. This has all the hallmarks of a classic beat up. Girl slaps boy is not news but boy slaps girl, now that is news.

I made the mistake of reading one of the pieces on this non-story, to see what the hell is the fuss about and the most egregious part of it was calling him a star and one of the best to ever play for Australia.

WTF? Some reflected glory, getting games at the tail end of the super era of McGrath, Warne, Waugh, Ponting, Gilchrist (with solid support). That combination of top level fast and spin bowlers, batsmen and a wicket keeper also so damaging with the bat, haven't been seen before or since and probably never will again. The Clarke era not long after that is the clear drop back to no longer being a side daylight above everyone else. It's not quite Jimmy Rowe is a star SA media reporting, Clarke wasn't awful, but as far as Australian cricketers go, average player and even more average bogan off the field.
