Bit of a bizarre take. While it has been good the way the Matilda's have done well and captured the attention of sports fans, a large part of it is due to the fact it's a world cup and it's being hosted here in Aus. The drive-by on AFLW was uncalled for.

Proof in the pudding will be to see what effect the women's world cup has on the WLeague and if there's any boost to their viewership numbers. That's a better comparison to be making here.
The headline made think the article was trash... but his main point is valid.

Matildas world cup football is high quality and good to watch .... AFLW isn't. So it's understandable viewership / crowds are low, and therefore salaries are much lower than the AFL .

Your comparison with WLeague is also valid - and I don't think anyone expects viewership to be high there either.

Also saying people will watch women's sport if it's good and then not mentioning the Women's cricket team or the Diamonds considering both their recent successes kinda disproves his own point.

Soccer is also a very different sport.
It's easier to get a high quality soccer product then it is to get that same level in AFLW.
That's not to say that AFL is BAD, it's just different and trying to compare AFLW and Womens Soccer in general is like comparing apples and oranges.
Bother are fruit (sports) but that is where the comparison just about ends.

Soccer is dead booring- teh local comp is of a relatively low standard. Hence fans follow European teams. The quality is miles and miles apart, and the womens game and A Laegue lacks the world level extreme tallent such as messi who is watchable. I suspect the world cup is an event rather than a groundswell of support for the game.

I have been watching a bit or womens sport, and will continue to, including cycling at a world level. It lacks the incredible speed and power of mens sports that diminishes the veiwing pleasure unless you are a tragic.

Girls have played soccer growing up for decades, if not longer. Before the AFLW, girls got shunted out of the sport after auskick. We're probably 8 years away from the first generation to come through that could play from young all the way to pros.

I think AFLW also needs some more tweaks to the rules before it really gets going. The grounds are too big for a start (as women can't kick as far or run as fast).

Personally I'll watch Aussie sport regardless of gender if we have a competitive side. I think that has more to do with it than anything. I would have watched more women's soccer than men's in the last decade because memory tells me the women's side has actually been capable of winning some games.

I struggled to watch much of the Ashes due to timezones and subsequently didn't watch the women's Ashes at all but Id say I'm on record with my support for the WBBL Scorchers and would watch them as much as the men's side.

Will also watch swimming at the Olympics, for example, regardless of gender because we dominate.

Lose by a squillion points to Sydney and get crucified in the press by the usual gutter journos, then lose by 1 point in a very competitive game against Essendon and get accused of tanking?...it's hilarious.
Can someone give these clickbait experts a real job...

I think a large part of the Matilda's brilliant cut through is that they have massive appeal to people that normally wouldn't follow sport.

There's no in group/out group thing here. If your not a sports fan or domestic sports fan, soccer and especially this likeable women's team is the perfect time to enjoy a communal event.

There's something for everybody. If you're a recent immigrant who knows nothing about the domestic codes or cricket, soccer is something you can get behind. If you're a progressive or queer you'll probably like the messaging. If you're an Aussie sport nuffy you'll love watching Australia do well on the big stage. And if you're a theatre goer it doesn't get better than this.

Hell, that cheer squad looked like a bunch of Redditors that have never been to a sporting event in their life.

I don't think this will have any material impact on association football's popularity in Australia, particularly the men's, but I do think we could see it become the sport of choice for talented sportswomen.

I'm happy to watch the Matildas WC matches when home ... but will still chose the Derby this weekend. Won't lead to me watching local soccer matches however (mens or womens) - but I do jump onboard to support Aussies in almost any world cup kind of event.

I enjoy WBBL much more than AFLW

I like watching beach volley ball.

100% this. Which is why it maked zero sense the AFL expanded to 18 teams so quickly.
As of its present state, it's a diluted product and the high calibre players are spread too thin resulting in poor viewing. I understand it was about the $, but it wasn't a very strategic move by AFL and the clubs that missed out on the inaugural teams. Would have been better off massively investing in grassroots to ensure girls that are in the system are kept there, and those in other sports can be attracted into the AFL system based on the mass investment to provide a professional sport as a viable career.

The immediate fix of the diluted product is to reduce the ground size ... but ... you have to wonder if you give it 20yrs, the girls coming through should be more than able to run out games like the blokes and most of them about to kick +40m? The risk with this is the loss of viewership right now and the deserved criticism that the product itself is a bit meh.

Mate, if you have a look at that authors' previous musings for the Murdoch press you'll take anything he says with a salt mine.

Disagree that the Women's World Cup is high quality. I watched the Matildas vs Denmark game and the difference in skill between the men and women is stark. The passing was poor, the strategy, just hoofing it towards goal in the hope a striker could break free. It's not terrible and I watched along with others because the Matildas are competitive and it's a home tournament. But it compares poorly to tennis or Olympic sports, where the skills of the women are on par with men, it's just a strength difference.

I have been surprised at the poor quality of much of the play in the World Cup. But there have been some exceptional moments like Fowler’s through ball for the first goal the other night.
Some of the teams are well below the standard expected. I don’t know how Morocco qualified for the last 16 given they lost 6-0 to Germany.
A major flaw in all the games has been the ease at which teams surrender possession either through poor passing or a lack of control when trapping the ball. I’m not sure why this is since it doesn’t require strength or power.
Shooting from distance is also an issue. This is understandable given women lack the leg power that men have. Many shots at goal result in easy saves. However at closer range this isn’t as much an issue as seen with a lot of the penalty taking and shots from a similar distance.
Australia look good when using pace outside and the defence is well organised and effective. With Kerr back the forward line looks potent. We really should reach the final.

I believe Maddie Prespakis played all the way through from Auskick to AFLW.
