Thoughts on Suma's mini rant in the Worst today?

He comes across as salty bagging out Simo going on leave. Pretty sure he worked on as the players had their mandatory break. He was focusing on the draft and then welcoming in the new players.

The guy and his family are entitled to have a break. When would he get one if he didn't go now?

Summa never misses a chance to shit on Simmo so I usually just take it with the smallest grain of salt.

Very on brand for Suma lately. Acting as if the week before Christmas is particularly critical for strategy development (or something) is quite ridiculous. A number of other head coaches are also in the US doing the same thing so it's all a bit selective. He also brought up missing the exit interviews which to be fair remains an odd note.

There's a bit of vibe that on top of Suma's axe-grinding there are maybe a few old guard types using him to air grievances.

Apparently Kurt Mutimer is still unhappy with how his career ended and is teaming up with Suma for the white-anting.

Mostly pointless, very repetitive and boring. Would not read again.

He could have made his point(s) with about half of the words he used. Maybe less

Essentially Sumich is saying Simpson should have done ALL the player exit interviews and leaving overseas during preseason is ill timed/poorly planned

Hard to disagree that he should’ve done the exit interviews personally although I will say that in the weeks leading up to the end of the season Simpson was under immense pressure and there was significant doubt if he would retain his job. With that in mind, it’s arguable that he wasn’t perhaps in the best frame of mind for those interviews and needed some time and space away from the club

As for the trip. We don’t know when it was planned for but such a trip was raised mid-season by Eddie McChins so it could well have been mapped out months ago. Timing may also have been subject to availability of the places he’s visiting although that’s a guess

Maybe he could have gone before the players returned from their own break but I suspect with new S&C staff coming in and a very important draft, Simpson is likely to have been planning the preseason program in detail as well as some input into the draft

Ultimately, he’s missed this week and the end of last week so 3, maybe 4, sessions all up at a time when the pattern of training had been well established

Yes, it is odd for the senior coach to be away during preseason and there is validity to question of whether it is in the best interest of the club. However, if you’re going to have what comes across as a bit of an unhinged rant maybe do a little bit of work to find out why it was now and what he was doing prior to preseason

I don’t think it’s as big an issue as Sumich has made out but nor do I think it’s unreasonable to raise it

Here’s the article in full for people to make their own assessment

There’s just no way that West Coast coach Adam Simpson should have missed the past fortnight of Eagles training to head overseas on leave.
A coach should be in charge and in total control of all training and pivotal football operations across his entire program, particularly at this vital stage of summer preparation for a new season.
He should not have been allowed to go away on leave with such a young Eagles squad launching a new era that Simpson himself has trumpeted.
He survived the chop in late August by a narrow vote among a divided West Coast board of directors despite another disastrous season with just three wins, following on from two victories in 2022.

The besieged coach then missed some crucial end-of-season player reviews, leaving those delicate assessments of individual performances to wellbeing manager Drew Petrie.
Simpson instead holidayed at his Margaret River retreat in the immediate aftermath of his controversial survival, although he did apologise to players ahead of the fairest-and-best awards presentation later into that week.
That did not go down well at the time with the player group.
Many players were puzzled why the coach had not conducted end-of-season evaluations and disclosed ambitious plans for revival after such a horrible past two seasons.
So, it’s probably not surprising to board members and Eagles staff close to Simpson that he headed to the sanctity of a family holiday to the United States this month while his players and staff concluded training ahead of the annual Christmas break.
“He’s missed a vital building stage of training with his trip away at precisely a wrong time.”
It is certainly surprising to football traditionalists that Simpson would have such an excursion sanctioned by a football manager, chief executive or board members.
There’s no way Mick Malthouse at anywhere through his 1990s reign under Trevor Nisbett as football department boss, nor John Worsfold across a 12-year coaching rule under Steve Woodhouse, would have missed important phases of summer training.
It is not only expected of a senior coach to manage an entire football department and training program, but it is an extremely poor image for Simpson and a West Coast club in the biggest on-field playing crisis in its 37-year history.

Simpson is apparently combining his two-week trip to New York with fact-finding excursions into top NFL outfit Philadelphia Eagles.
Personal leave or any degree of professional development still cannot be justified while critical development training is in full swing.
Simpson should have been in full control of training and player management until Wednesday’s final session and leave officially commences on Thursday.
He retained his job with apparent views from some Eagles directors that with a young and emerging squad, refreshed strength and conditioning and medical strategies that West Coast can improve markedly with a fitter and healthier squad for 2024.
Individual and team development of the third-youngest list in the business - with 21 players under the age of 22 in the squad - is critical to any prospects of projected improvement at West Coast.
The coach should oversee everything that is happening within such a very impressionable outfit and not leave that to assistant coaches and support staff.
Even more important to consider here is that Simpson now has at his disposal highly-touted top draft pick Harley Reid as the biggest West Coast import since superstar Chris Judd in 2001.

Every outing that Reid and this youthful, rebuilding group is decisive.
It is generating strength and conditioning, growing their skills, and vitally learning everything about requirements to become an AFL player who can handle the pressure-cooker nature of the game’s toughest and unforgiving environment.
Simpson should be overseeing all of that development while building important relationship bonds with his new breed of Eagles and their playing styles and habits.
He’s missed a vital building stage of training with his trip away at precisely a wrong time.
There will be members of the Eagles faithful who think my views on Simpson and this latest leave of absence is too harsh and perhaps unfair. But it is simply unacceptable not being at every session with his young group of players.
I wonder what West Coast members, fans and commercial sponsors as well as even Eagles insiders and players actually think of the coach being away while training is in full motion.
West Coast have won just seven of their past 54 games, and only four of the last 29 at home in front of devoted members.

If Simpson wanted to head to the US, either privately with his family or to enhance his own coaching development, then go in September or October when players and staff are on their annual leave.
Even a personal development trip should have been planned from about round six or seven at the end of April when West Coast had managed just one win and already definitely out of finals calculations for 2023.
It’s a vital chance missed to establish an ‘all-in’ approach to Simpson’s publicly portrayed projections of a new West Coast in 2024.

Pretty sure Simmo's on P&D with US sporting teams. It's not like Morrison going to Hawaii during the bushfires.

The answer seems to be “we don’t really care”. There you go Suma, wonder no more.

No issues with Simmo's leave. This was announced months ago and the club has had an incredibly strong off-season. Happy to back them in to know what works best for the club and its people.

Suma is just writing another click bait article with an easy target

From the Herald Sun…. Between 20/30 coaches went overseas or interstate for PD.

WHERE COACHES ARE HEADED THIS OFF-SEASON

Adelaide Crows

Adelaide head coach Matthew Nicks and head of football Adam Kelly opted to go across the ditch to spend a week inside one of the most successful sporting organisations in the world.

The pair travelled to Wellington to work with New Zealand Rugby. While the All Blacks and their coaches are currently preparing for the World Cup final in France, Nicks and Kelly spent time with Super Rugby coaches and managers, as well as presenting to a conference at the NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport.

Fremantle

It’s not just the coaches getting involved at the Dockers, with Justin Longmuir and several of his Fremantle players heading to the US this off-season.

Gold Coast

Damien Hardwick has settled in on the Gold Coast and after a long trip to Europe earlier in the year, he’s opted for a quiet off-season in preparation for 2024.

However, some of his assistants will be spending time with the Supercars teams when they come to town for the GC 500 this weekend. They’re hoping to take in some different perspectives of how a team operates to bring back some insights for the Suns as they look to make their first finals appearance.

GWS

Several members of staff, including coach of the year Adam Kingsley, have headed overseas as the Giants look to go one better in 2024.

Kingsley is off to America where he is spending a large chunk of time in Florida with the Miami Heat, Miami Dolphins and Florida Panthers. He’s then set to move up the coast to both Boston and Philadelphia.

Other coaches are off to Europe to learn from some of the world’s best football teams. They’ll head to Kylian Mbappe’s PSG before also spending time at legendary Italian club, Parma.

Hawthorn

Sam Mitchell and his assistant Adrian Hickmott have spent a week with Premier League giants, Tottenham.

Spurs are the talk of the town under Aussie manager Ange Postecoglou, and Mitchell is linking up again with the former Socceroos boss after also spending time with him while he was at Celtic.

Melbourne

After taking some well-deserved time off after a long season, Simon Goodwin travelled to New Zealand for several days at the end of October for professional development.

North Melbourne

Alastair Clarkson has turned to the US again as he takes on a two-week trip to the west coast.

He is set to visit two American sporting powerhouses, the San Francisco 49ers and the Golden State Warriors, as he prepares for his second season with the Kangaroos.

Sydney

A trio of Sydney coaches – John Longmire, Dean Cox and Jarrad McVeigh – have been put through their paces with a busy US trip.

They started with a four-day executive leadership course at Harvard, before staying in Massachusetts to spend time with both the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots.

They’re ending their trip with some time in New York where they will work with both the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Rangers.

West Coast

After a difficult year on the field, the Eagles have three coaches, including Adam Simpson, heading overseas for professional development.

Simpson will travel to the US alongside strategy and stoppages coach Jarrad Schofield. Forwards coach Luke Webster will be off to New Zealand before the end of the year.

Agree it’s not as big an issue as maybe Suma is making it out to be but for a coach in my opinion is fighting to keep his job one would think that he would not miss a thing and be on top of every moving part.

So, micromanage the team instead of getting personal development to improve overall?

Yeah, that'll work just fine...

Adam needs to work on his own coaching as he has not performed in his own job. I am expecting he is doing this and part of that will certainly be eyes over everything.
Call it whatever you like. Bottom line is taking responsibility for his role.

Yes, that's why he's gone to the USA with Jarrad Schofield.

Yes but there's a former senior coach holding the reins who can do that for him. That's why there's assistant coaches.

Micromanaging isn't 'taking responsibility' for your role, it actually ends up causing you to get fired, because you're not doing everything you can do to improve as an individual.

As a former manager in hotels, every micro-manager I've known hasn't had a happy fate.

Any organisation would be more happy that their senior coaches are doing P&D. Most of the other clubs are doing the same thing, after all.

All articles like that from Suma do is demonstrate how out of touch he is.

So much of the pre-Christmas training seems to be under the guidance of the fitness staff, this is -the- time to go away. Once the new year hits it'll be all systems go.
Call it for what it is.

Great player. A complete and utter ****head after it.

It’s not about micro managing, clearly you have not coached.
It’s about making sure every single department that has an effect on his role is doing their job.
Assistants get paid a quarter of what senior coaches do for a reason. They simply don’t have anywhere near the responsibility.
Unfortunately for Assistant coaches in recent times they have been getting fired and blamed for the poor performances of senior coaches. That is a very worrying trend on its own and maybe for another thread.
Anyway we will agree to disagree and I wish you a merry Xmas.
