I'm kinda surprised McKenna had this view. We did a lot for him, especially when he got homesick, and we allowed him to go home mid season.

shows how bad our culutre issues were i suppose,
He reckons we didn't do enough when the media "went after" him in 2020.

wtf were we going to do?

Tom Browne was at the club peaking through ATF fencing rofl trying to get a photo of connor sneezing.

If that's his excuse for not wanting to come back, he's a bit of a DH then.

Mckenna was a sook, good riddance. Only wanted to play his way.

I’m not fussed about McKenna either. From the way he plays, to how he acts, he’s here for one reason, to suck as money out of the game as possible and then he’ll bugger off back home as soon as he can.

I think we actually did a lot to help turn him into a pretty good player, but I also think with Connor everything is a little bit one-way.

I wonder how he is viewed in Ireland? Probably the same way. Abandoned the national sport to chase money then comes back for a cameo cup and quickly disappears back to AFL.

After yesterday's warm-up, it sounds like the honeymoon is definitely over for Brad, on this board anyway. Here's what I can surmise as the general points of dissatisfaction from yesterday;

  • game plan looks the same / question marks over what the game plan actually is
  • anxiety over Martin's change of position
  • anxiety over continuing to play Heppell
  • continued dissatisfaction over size of midfield (though Setterfield, Durham and Perkins are now playing through there)
  • annoyance that Tsatas was played on a wing
  • annoyance that Cox was played on a wing instead of replacing Ridley (this is my bugbear)
  • annoyance that he did not coach himself yesterday

Cold Sober noticed all the whinging straight away. Just thought I'd synthesise the dissatisfaction.

FWIW, I'm not Chicken Littling yet, but given our first half-dozen games, I would have thought it important that we treat both practice games more seriously than we seem to be.

Important to remember, though, that Scott was at pains to point out last year that we are a long way from where we need to be. One pre-season under the Scott program, remembering that last year's was a write-off, isn't going to suffice. Supporters are going to have to be patient. Remember also that after the 2023 recruiting period we have emerged with the warchest in-tact while still bolstering positions we needed to. There's a lot to look forward to if we're patient and trust that he'll continue to build.

I love the fact he has a hard edge to him, and the is driving professional standards.

But it remains to be seen whether he himself can implement a contemporary game plan/organise the playing list to be able to compete at the top level.

Time will tell, but st kilda look very fit, and very organised and they’re a team on a similar trajectory to us.

Given they have actually won a final in recent history I would say they are a team a bit further up the road than us.

you kind of got to take it with a grain of salt though.

For all we know we were testing some stuff.

Yeah we got belted and yeah we looked pretty shit, but first 5 weeks will tell us where we are at. If we don't come out breathing fire against the hawks in R1, that will be tell you all you need to know.

There is no honeymoon period I agree. There is zero patience left in this club.

Probably as an obscenly talented athlete sportsman who is enough of a romantic to be trying to do it all.

I know you didn't say it. But I don't see why fans will dismiss McKenna's criticism when Scott has not just acknowledged it but has been driven to address/correct the issues McKenna identified.

We should have have defended him for not breaking the law and called out Mooney, king and the "journos" for singling out a young lad whose family is halfway across the globe for not doing anything wrong at a time of heightened anxiety.

We handled almost every aspect of 2020 poorly.
I wasn't surprised he didn't want to come back. Or that tippa considered Freo as an alternative as well

I was sold on Scott from that moment

A Daniher leaving
Saad walking out
Tippas abrupt retirement
Merrett on the fence about committing
Woosha disengaged

The Tanner-Brasher/Campbell years have been some of our worst.
It's nice that he's focused on that whilst the slow list turnover happens

I wonder how much pressure scott will be under if we finish bottom 6 this year?
How long is he contracted for?

Maybe outside voice but no pressure from within given the club gave him a free hit last year to sit back and observe the situation and form a plan. They know it will be a 2 or 3 year plan to start moving forward. This year is basically year 1 of Scotts build starting with player attitude and preparation. There will be some casualties at the end of the year but it will not be the coach. 90% of the football department is new.

If we make a quick jump then it will be great but personally I see it as more of a 4 or 5 year build from here to top 4 consistency .
People need to get their heads around the fact that the list is middle of the road and a lot of the usual suspects have been around for 5 to 10 years of that mediocracy .
