I think Scott is more using this year just to get a read of his players without implementing anything too major that goes beyond football smarts and effort. Also seeing how they respond to his instruction rather than implmenting anything too major defensivily

Im not entirely sure of this, id say there is much more to it. Just a general jist i get and id be quite content if that were the case

I think a year to get an understanding of the list especially early on before implementing too much. Getting a guage of what arsenal hes got without taking into account too much past history

Hes clearly playing genuine small forwards that can apply pressure. So he understand the importance of pressure and forward 50 stoppage/repeat stoppage. Whether thats occuring is another thing, it isnt at this point but i think its the way to keep going for now

When pushed this season they haven't shut down and haven't been afraid to play aggressive when momentum was against them. See how that goes when they come up against the real deal but so far they seem committed to the game plan.
Been the most promising aspect of his tenure so far.
Hawks pushed us, we belted them
Suns worked back into the lead, we wrestled it back and held onto it
Saints smashed us and we drew level. Just didnt have the ability to hold momentum there

Will be an interesting game this weekend

I think it's pretty obvious even by Round 3 that the team is playing more cohesively than it's played before.

There's more confidence in the actions being taken - a visible voluntary shift in momentum in response to a dip in performance - less panic when the alarm bells start ringing - and a feeling that when a loss does come, you walk away from it thinking that it was not at the expense of structure or effort, and that it's your run of the mill loss that even some good teams are privy to.

This may be a result of positional changes, structural adjustments, a cultural shift or a different approach as a legit game day coach. Or it may very well also be a result of a genuine buy-in across the board from something that's being sold correctly.

They're going to make a lot of mistakes, and a lot of those are going to make us shake our heads, it's inevitable, it comes with the territory of a developing side. But at no point did I feel like they were worried, unsure, or scared to get on with it. I look, and see individuals who know they've got each other's backs and a team who knows a coach has theirs.

That is pretty much what is happening. Not overly complex game plan and a few new structure and work through the list. I do not see a lot of big changes to game plan next year either. They will not fall into the cam trap as Truck did. They will keep working on refining what they have as they turn over the players .

Whats the cam trap?

Do we ever need to go too complex?

Trend atm is very attacking footy & forward pressure. You can over complicate footy sometimes.

The best teams pressure and do the basics right for longer. Fitness and being able to execute the basics under high pressure also seperate the best teams from the pack.

A well structured zone is the layer on top of the basics that wins you a Premiership, being able to control the oppositions ball movement is very important. You see the best sides able to force their opponents consistently wide, forcing them to make low percentage passes i50 or taking shots at goal from difficult angles.

Eth's suggestion of Mass higher up the ground goes someway to solving the quality of the i50s. Merrett was soundly blanketed last night. Some of our kicks i50 were shocking.
If we can get Massimo, Merrett and Walla doing our i50s, we'd win so many games.

The trend is attack but the best sides have a defensive balance. To play attack you need to have the endurance runners. You still need a solid defensive zone. The game will spin back the other way at some stage. I actually like how Scott has set the basic plan. We are in grade 2 when it comes to team defense but you can see the first part of the plan starting to work for longer.

I really like what Ross Lyon is doing right now. He is using the running power on their list well by having the half forwards as almost two extra wings and the half backs very attacking all wrapped up in a good but basic zone defense. The ability of their half forwards to not only apply pressure inside 50 but also at half back is really good. I like the fact that if sides give them the wing they will take it but also have players pushing in behind from the opposite wing.

Is it spineless to do what every mug is pressuring you to do?

Would’ve thought it takes more spine to stick to your guns really… even if you’re wrong that still takes some spine.
He’s not really exposed to the pressure from us mugs to drop Heppell, he’s actually exposed to the pressure from club business as usual / inertia to keep him in.

In truth I reckon Scott knows that once dropped, Hepp is not coming back. He is going to wait until it’s not a debatable, line ball call, and then get it done. It’s not dropping someone, it’s ending their career.

Not agreeing with his approach, just speculating as to his mindset.

It was addressed in the presser today, and I don’t think club people are quite so married to the idea of Heppell playing every week as a romantic notion 🤔

Maybe

I reckon it was more spineless picking Stringer last week...
Same! Him picking Stringer after one okay VFL game against an absolutely dogshit team reeks more to me of old Essendon than anything he's doing with Heppell, Jones or whoever else people on here complain about.

We're never gonna actually get good as a football club until we move past Stringer. He's simply not good. Every other club but us knows that, or else they'd have coming knocking the past couple of years when we've been on fire and had people jumping ship.
