Player Watch Mid-Season Pick #13 (2021) - Jed McEntee

This discussion would be fair if our best players had come to play and it was our lesser players like McEntee who cost us. That's not what happened.

McEntee had 4 less possessions than Wines and 5 less than Rozee. Just think about that for a second.

In fact, last night of all nights McEntee actually did play his role pretty well. 12 touches and 7 tackles. Had a mare with that lofted kick in the last quarter but gee he was a long way down the list of problems last night.

Lol as if you can’t see the difference

Rozee is a gun kid copping all sorts of attention off the ball who has carried this team at times for 2 years now.

Wines has been a gun mid for us who is obviously injured.

Finlayson was rightly dropped after a string of poor games. Jed’s had a longer stretch of poor games but Hinkley keeps picking him. Two sets of rules being applied.

You pick your best available 22 each week. Jed is depth at best

McEntee also outperformed everyone's favourite big bull tough guy who turns into a weak side stepping fumbling mess in finals, SPP.

Jed Heads vindicated again.

Lol Spp just had a 31 goal season

Something mcintee will never ever do.

And no he did not play his role last night every well.

He was barely near an opponent all night, and I don’t believe that’s cause a gws player could t keep up with him.

whoever should have been on him obviously knew they could just leave him open all game and not suffer. Someone else on our team was copping a 2nd or 3rd defender all game long because of this.

He had a serviceable couple of games this year and then wavered between useless to outright detrimental.

He’s one of if not the weakest link in our 22 every week.

14 goals from a permanent forward for the year in a team that finished top 4 is horrid.

His tackling is not a strength. Last night he did not influence the game with pressure. His opponents were happy to take him on.

Dude, one is a Brownlow medalist and was stand in captain whilst the other has been All Australian the past two seasons. They're both presumably getting paid ~$800k to be at the forefront of this team. They both turned in truly awful finals campaigns and it was THEIR section of the ground that was beaten most obviously and comprehensively in both finals, especially when benchmarked against what happened in the home and away season.

They literally both delivered a handful more possessions than a role playing small forward mid season draftee who is probably on ~$200k and yet it's this guy who has his personal thread ticking over the pages.

It's nonsensical garbage.

At least SPP has built up credits for his form earlier this year. Jed has zero credits. You’d pick SPP over Jed every day of the week even after his form has dropped off

I'm glad you're having a bit of fun.

As the saying goes, Jed Heads have more fun.

The most fun was when half this forum actually genuinely deluded themselves into thinking that our man would lose his spot in the team to Orazio Fantasia for the first final. As in, the Orazio Fantasia. That guy. Seriously, they actually thought that would happen!

Do you reckon Jed will maintain his spot next year?

Orazio still kicked as many goals as Jed over the two finals, so we have that going for us.

Wines is obviously injured / cooked.

Saying , haha mcintee only had a few less possessions than this player that is injured / cooked within an inch of his life isn’t something to brag about.

And as alresdy mentioned mcintee couldn’t turn in a performed half as good as rozees 15th best game this year.

Rozee is miles ahead of him, rozee is a smite mid. Rozee copped a shitload of work off the ball. Rozee will need to work on that in the future cause he’s going to get targeted and not get the protection of the favoured vic boys club.

But gws basically said here mcintee, do your worst.

Bragging that mcintee only had a few less possessions than our gun mid who got targeted off the ball isn’t a win. It’s not a good return for mcintee.

Yes.

Who do you think is going to take his spot?
I am going to have to wait to see who walks through the doors of Alberton.

I would love to nab Lance Collard in the draft to oust Jed.
Would love Munkara as a rookie too.

Goal kicking forward is another issue for us. Rioli is oldish, Orazio is on the outer, Byrne-Jones is also oldish.

We will see if the List Management team feel it is a problem or that McEntee is still the answer.

You cant have two defensive small forwards in McEntee and DBJ, its far to negative and puts all the onus on Rioli and Spp. It was working ok earlier in the year but it started to become ineffectual as the year ground on. A decent small offensive forward who can also provide this role is a must.

It’s our sh!t game plan. It must change! This forward pressure, chaotic game plan just doesn’t work in big times

It worked for Richmond, the diff being they played natural forwards who could kick goals , but who were disciplined defensively. Dbj is a defender who fell into this role after being dropped and Mcentee is a mid who has never played forrward, they dont have the forward skillset.

Ask yourself, how many of the other top 8 side does this guy get selected in. And I am not convinced many of the bottom 8 sides pick him either. As for the question of who you select in his place, anyone on the list who has ever one AFL trait because he has zero. Unless running alongside and opponent is now an AFL trait.

McEntee played his role abysmally. He was expected to lock down Whitfield and was utterly destroyed from the opening bounce and had to be moved off him. His two kicks in those 12 possessions were drop dead clangers.

Look I get it, he wasn't the major contributing factor in our loss compared to the smashing our midfield copped, but Whitfield did a lot of damage off half back and that has to be considered.

Again it also comes back to a negative coach mindset where a half forward whose sole role is as a stopper as opposed to a goal scorer gets exposed in a final. If he can't do the one he's picked for, how long are the odds he will fluke the other?

Jed was poor once again but was never going to kerb Whitfield who is a champion. We should have been more creative and had Drew do the job. McEntee is a hell of a tryer but shouldn't be in an AFL side. It's not his fault he gets picked and really he is well down the list of unperforming players from last night.
SPP = dreadful efforts - no composure
Durs = must be injured - he was terrible
Burton = Rabbit in the headlights
Iliir = See above
DBJ = bust be injured - no idea last night. Should not get another game up forward. (and I was once a huge fan)
Marshall, Dixon, McKenzie, Lycett = horrible efforts from experienced players.

The only good to come from last night was Rioli who stood up when it mattered and Miles Bergman who was stoic and gutsy.
