The court case between Moira Deeming and Victorian Opposition Leader John Pesutto began today in the Federal Court.

If Pesutto loses, the ramifications will be massive-not just financially, but in a politicial sense as well, with his leadership of the Liberals under serious threat. And his federal counterpart Peter Dutton will be livid.

The biggest winner out of all this-Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen.

Two Liberals?
Give them a mace each and let them fight it out in a swamp.
Don't care.

Any damage to the Liberal party will be welcome.
Stupid dog fking cnts deserve to be in an excavated ditch.

quick review of this weeks def trial and things arnt going all that swimmingly for moira

two points based on twittersphere coverage

1. god squad members of the parliamentary liberal party were actively communicating/sharing info with each other on social media in the lead up to and post deemings expulsion ..... a point that had to be teased out of witnesses such as renee heath by defence counsel (an admission that was strangely absent in heaths affidavit - what will her god think of lie by omission?)

2. cross exam of deemings social media 'expert witness' was brutal and unlikely to help moiras claim that damage to her character was far reaching .... quite the opposite in fact

back monday for more fun and games ..... expect the herald $cum will be working feverishly over the weekend to further push the andrews car accident story to distract from this farcical nonsense

Looks like John Pesutto has won the first week, but there's still another two weeks to go. The big question is will Moira Deeming subpeona Sky News political commentator Peta Credlin and federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to give evidence at the trial? The Liberals can thank their lucky stars this trial is occuring now, because imagine if it was on in the middle of an election year (2026)-what damage would that do to the Coalition chances of regaining power in Victoria since 2014?

It looks like any chance John Pesutto has of keeping his job as leader of the Liberals and the Opposition is getting slimmer by the hour. Expect to see a leadership challenge against Pesutto to happen by the middle of October. And don't be surprised to see the Nationals ramping up discussion among themselves about walking away from the Coalition agreement with the Liberals.

The opportunists backing Deeming are the ones leaking to Deery at the H-Sun. The court won't find in favour of Deeming but the political damage is already done.

I don't like the idea of four year fixed terms because it encourages the opposition to sleep the first 2 1/2 years before they have to wake up and try to win their seat again. We are still two years away so most of the public won't notice.

The only surprise for me is if Jacinta retires before time. She's 51 and been in Parliament since 1999.

And Peter Dutton and his federal Coalition team will be furious at their Victorian counterparts. They fear the longer the case drags on, the more damage it could do to the Coalition winning the next federal election and taking some of the seats back from the 'teals' which they lost in 2022.

BTW, the next meeting of the Victorian Liberals is going to make for interesting viewing, especially if the Deeming continues to go on and on. What chance John Pesutto has of staring down a leadership challenge from within his own party? And Jacinta Allen (and Daniel Andrews) must be loving every second of it.

i would venture that public awareness is not the primary concern for liberals ..... its the internal war thats now raging between various factions within the party ..... unhinged egos inside the parliamentary team and within the inner sanctum of conservative politics will ensure this fiasco will not be forgotten - its ramifications will be felt for a looooong time

allen must be laughing her head off at circus unfolding before our eyes

You can almost bet the white anting will go on well after the court case.

Wish there was live CCTV of the next Victorian Liberal Party meeting before the spring session of Parliament-would make for interesting viewing and listening. No wonder the Nationals want to break the Coalition agreement, after what has happened in the last couple of weeks in court.

What is your source for the Nats wanting to break the Coalition agreement?

Reckon the Nats are sick and tired of being the ones to take up the fight to the Allen Labor government while their Liberal counterparts are more interested in infighting over a court case which will have wide ranging implications for the future of the Coalition agreement.

So there is no source. It's a suspicion.

i’m not across the hearing, so i wouldn’t guess the outcome. pesutto is the moderate leader the libs so badly need. but the right has the party by the short-n-curlies aided and abetted by the murdoch press.

and how self-important was the unelected arrogant credlin in bestowing the future leadership of the parliamentary liberal party on deeming in one of her leaked email exchanges.

If Deeming or one of her crew ever leads the party, they'll fail worse than they have done the last 3 elections. It's a great way to consolidate 20% of voters for life and totally alienate at least 60%, with the always-indifferent other 20%.

She is a moron. No political nous whatsoever this has been clear from her own words.

Just an out of her depth wannabe weirdo that happens to have some national backers that can’t stand Pesutto. That’s it.

Let's say if the judge finds in favour of Moira Deeming and also order John Pesutto and the Liberals to pay full court costs. What hope does Pesutto has of staring down a leadership challenge and keeping his job? The only fortunate thing to come out of this court case is it's not happening in the middle of a state election year.

Rug roh John looks like a leadership spill is imminent. Even if he survives this one, he's a dead man walking.
Better get the popcorn out. Interesting to see who John Pesutto will be up against. And Federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton will no doubt be livid at the prospect of a damaging leadership crisis in Victoria, just when he has PM Anthony Albanese under real pressure.

At no stage has there ever been any chance the Liberal Party would bear any costs relating to this case.

No, not the party itself.

But I'm guessing a good chunk of the money going to legal fees is money that would otherwise have gone to the party.

The thing that Deeming is doing, which will work for the god-botherers faction of the party, is that if she wins and Pessutto is financially ruined, it'll make it even more insane for normal electable people to join the Liberal Party.

Not only is it a pay decrease with uncertain employment future, but it might also financially ruin you because half the party considers you heretics and will do anything to get rid of you and your chances of being elected.

It'd be stupid to join the ALP if you weren't a member of the Union. But it would be equal lunacy to join the Liberal Party if you already have a job paying more than $170k ($200k MP salary), family and assets to lose. (if the intent of the party is to run for parliament one day)

I mean, this is a pretty good argument as to why the party should indemnify parliamentary leaders for action against them that arise from the fulfilment of their roles. But that has not been requested by JP at any stage.

I don't think there will be a finding for Mrs Deeming, and politically it won't matter. My intel is the stories in the papers this morning are largely accurate. That means the opportunists will get their scalp, and at a time when the Victorian Coalition is as electorally palatable as they have been since 2014, we will waste that capital because of an MP brought the party into disrepute and disagreed vehemently.

I think that indemnification would work if you had somebody like Pesutto as leader. But what if you had Deeming? Indemnifying Deeming for saying silly things sounds like something which would send you broke.

From an electoral point of view, I don't think it really matters who's leading the party as long as it is so clearly divided between reasonable and unreasonable.

Or, the reasonable will consider that they can never win unless the party is united and that the unreasonable will never use such reason. So the only way to win is if the reasonable people cede to the unreasonable who take over and hope they can hide their stupidity long enough to get elected.
