Top end talent for the modern Liberal Party.
When a party seems to run on the philosophy of "private sector = good, public sector = bad", I think it's always worth questioning why their politicians choose to spend their time in the public sector that they have such disdain for, rather than the private sector that they think is noble and virtuous (and pays better).

I don't know how successful Battin was in the private sector. It sounds like he only owned the one Bakers Delight franchise, so he probably wasn't any kind of big shot. I'm less concerned about those types of Liberal politicians, because you can see clear motivations as to why they ran for office - they can make a comfortable living being a mouthpiece in parliament for Aunty Gina and Uncle Rupert (or a warrior for their favourite religion or bigotry if that's what motivates them), and that's easier than building and operating a successful business. They're effectively just agents that have been hired to perform a role by party donors.

It's the politicians who have actually made serious dosh from owning a business that concern me, because they don't need to be there. They've chosen to be there, I'd imagine mostly because of their ego and lust for power and status, but also because they probably want to be personally involved in rigging the game for their own interests. Unsurprisingly that usually involves having a much weaker public sector with fewer employees, less oversight, less protections for the public, and lower taxes for the wealthy as a result.

It is mind boggling that the Liberals still even have a base.

Without Newscorp, Gina and Co. the Liberals would have been wound up a decade ago.
Still waiting for you to answer my question, if you feel like it.

Which of these crucial areas are in better shape than 2014?

- Health system

- Budget position & financial sustainability

- Education

- Crime rates

- Justice system

It’s not that bloody bad here. The way you are carrying on you’d think a civil war is about to break out.

Yourself and PJays might be melting faster than the Antarctic ice sheet but I bet neither of you can name one decent thing the Liberals have done in Victoria since Kennett.
I compared Melbourne liveability to the other capitals, hardly the same as claiming a civil war will break out.

Yes there is a crime problem due to the failures of the current government however the key problem is that Melbourne's population far exceeds the infrastructure and the tax addicted state government wants more immigration.

However in comparison to the short do nothing last Libs government, the ALP has done some pretty good things alongside their failures and corruption so they are still better especially with cookers back in charge of the libs.

If the nats had half a brain they would end the coalition tomorrow.

Health system: Not being helped by Federal intrusions into Bulk Billing.

Budget: Of course there's massive deficits when the Govt has an actual long term vision, rather than only getting in power to take cream from property developers.

Education: Yeah ALP addicted to funding private schools. The VCAA stuff is shit.

Crime rates: No major changes.

All in all, there's a fair bit of corruption around the ALP needs a kick up the arse. But it ain't coming from the Libs who have just sued their leader, then rolled him

He's an ex cop and ex Bakery owner.

That makes him a normal person, unlike 80% of politicians who worked in politics (politics proper or broader political world- advocacy, think tanks etc), unions or high-end law firms before being elected.

Haha yes.. but I wouldn’t be getting too excited just yet. They are currently a basket case and need to do plenty to turn things around.

The will have to face the positive news of the Metro Tunnel and West Gate Tunnel

One sold off anything that wasn't nailed down and didn't invest the proceeds into infrastructure improvements. The other actually thought East-West Link was a good idea, which is a fantastic litmus test to see who should never be trusted with decision-making.
That is unadulterated bulkshit. Citylink,
Bolte Bridge, MCEC ( Jeff’s Shed), overhaul of our archaic liquor laws, just to name some of Kennett’s achievements. He also paid off what was then unprecedented high debt left behind courtesy of Labor.

He put Melbourne and Victoria back on the map, which was a feat considering the damage by the Cain and Kirner governments. You must have been a toddler or just a liar?

So his achievements are a building and a tollway that is congested at 9pm Sunday that everyone pays out the arse for.

You forgot his greatest achievement.
****ing our train and tram networks by splitting them for privatisation.

Citylink was a massive improvement on John Caine jewell in the crown, the South East ‘Freeway’, complete with intersections and traffic lights. Kennett’s contract with Transurban expired in about 2002

The member for Berwick is the alternative premier - good lord
Nearly two thirds of voters didn’t vote Labor in the last election. It’s likely to be more next time.

Bolte Bridge,
Oh yay, two toll roads that absolutely nothing to solve congestion!

MCEC ( Jeff’s Shed),
Architecturally nice, but didn't even last 20 years before it needed a major expansion.

overhaul of our archaic liquor laws, just to name some of Kennett’s achievements.
Nothing to do with infrastructure. If you want to hero worship Kennett, go ahead, but please keep it pertinent to my post or don't quote me.

By selling off everything that wasn't nailed down. Howard and Costello tried to pass that off as good economic management too.

He put Melbourne and Victoria back on the map, which was a feat considering the damage by the Cain and Kirner governments.
That's entirely a matter of opinion, there are no facts contained in this sentence.

You must have been a toddler or just a liar?
You have no ability to call me a liar if you don't even understand what I'm talking about.

At last, someone who actually has the first clue about how transport engineering works. Well said.

Obviously it was going to be extended past 2002 - how else is Scotch college going to pay for their building program

Another fine example of how the private sector does things best 🙄

I only started following politics in 2010 and then stopped in 2014 - you squibbed my question so why should I bother with yours 🤷‍♂️

It's not even funny any more.

I should be rolling my eyes at their renewed focus on "law & order" (ie. racist fear campaigns) after the 2 Guy failures, but we need a better opposition to create a need for the government to be better. Cos at the moment, even as the most rusted on of lefties, the Vic Govt is battling a bit at the moment.

What has Scotch Colkege got to with anything? Doesn’t even border the freeway
