I must say, I was surprised that Monfries never took off in the AFL as he was a gun in the SANFL prior to his draft, not unlike recent runs by Jack Trengrove and Jimmy Toumpas. Must be a footspeed issue. Hopefully we can still extract some of that underlying class.

Best case scenario - a less injury plagued Salooek?

I think its not so much that people don't rate him but we don't rate him enough to give him a supposed 4 year contract which is ridiculous when we don't even offer those sort of deals to our good young players...
Plus the fact that we can get him via a standard trade or perhaps just draft him if he does get delisted or quits Essendon and thus not impact on our FA compo picks.

Monfries offers experience and leadership and will be a good pick up for Port.

He has been a regular best 22 for Essendon through out his career and he is an exceptional club man.

He has more strings to his bow that just being an attacking fwd having had fantastic games as a defensive forward and attacking mid - he was best on ground playing in the mid when we knocked off premiers the cats with an undermanned squad last year.

I for one will be sad to see him leave but we do have a number of similar player who can fill this role but Monfries is the only one we would get a decent trade for.

In my opinion Monfries >>>>>>Knights and Ebert

Considering Ports lack of experience, a four year deal is hardly a bad decision. You will get 4 good years at least out of him with a few cracker games amongst them.

Every time I see Essendon fans come here to pump up one of their players, I'm reminded of how incessant and wrong the `Danny Jacobs is a quality FB' brigade were.

I reckon that is worst case scenario.

So just to be clear - you are high on Monfries?

As a non-injured 2006-08 era Salopek standard player would obviously be quite a worthy addition to our team.

Is the feeling that we've held back on lodging formal offers for Monfries and/or Russell, because (1) we're waiting for the coaching appointment or (2) because our first objective will be to trade for them?
No doubt, both of the above.

As long as we try to trade for them by using Thomas/Salopek/Rodan as trade bait, I'm ok with bringing them both in.
I think Monfries by trade using pick swaps and Russell by a swap with one of the 3 players mentioned, or via a late pick in the ND or PSD. If it takes more for Russell, then let him go elsewhere.

Pick swaps being the 32/28 upgrade? Natman
Yeah, that would be as far as I would go considering that Essendon effectively may get nothing for him.
As with Russell, we need him to say that he wants to come home. The hybrids don't want him, so we can get him cheap.

I was listening to 5AA earlier on this week and did anyone else hear on there that Port offered Monfries a 4 year deal of 400k+ and he turned it down as he was waiting on an offer from Crows within the next 3 days?
I know Monfries wanted to come back to SA and Crows was his first pick but whether Crows are offering him a deal and whether thats the reason why he hasn't signed with Port yet?

All I have heard from every media outlet is that he nominated Alberton.

if thats true cv21 we should withdraw the offer...400k x 4yrs 4 monfries and he wants to go to the hybrids 1st choice haah onya way gus:rolleyes:

That'd be nice. Most we should give up for him is a third rounder, which would still put us in a better position than FA'ing him, but we should start negotiations with your suggestion.

Lol, there's your problem.

Didn't they try to say last year that Brad Ebert was going to go to the Crows?

That's just what I heard on the radio. I don't remember which one said it though, Graham or Stephen.
WTF are Graham and Stephen?
