I've just been thinking on who we would regard as the most improved player for us this season?

Probably the player that has attracted the most attention around the league would be Malceski. And he has certainly elevated himself into one of our very best players. But personally I'd already seen tremendous potential in him for more than a season now. So maybe he isn't quite coming off such a low base of expectation as some others on the list?

I'm wondering whether we shouldn't consider someone like Bevan who has had to fight back into the side when he seemed almost gone for all money as little more than a depth player 12 mths ago? So "most improved" would be to indicate a player that HAD to improve to remain in the team and did?

Then we have some others such as Macca who is now probably one our most consistent run-with players (despite the controversy about him from many fans) or possibly even an older player like Mathews who has seemed to find a whole new level after what even he would regard as a very down couple of seasons?

Thoughts?

Of the younger players I'd have to say McVeigh. He hasnt had a super year but I believe he has worked hard to remain in the side (Im sure there are many who would disagree). His last few weeks have been pretty good.

Of the older, established players I would go with Micky O. The old magic is back this year :thumbsu:

stunned you'd put micky o in, i can't see how....he's been mostly awful, until last weekend....barely done a thing, in a misfiring forward line
but i have to agree on mcveigh, and i'm one of his harshest critics...his last 2 months have been probly the most consistent of his career and i hope he can go on with it through the finals because he's obviously got the ability

I just think Micky has had a fairly solid season (apart from a handful of games) for a guy whose career could have been finished a couple of years ago because of niggling injuries. He has been kicking goals that would have been well beyond him a year or two ago.

I can't believe McVeigh has been mentioned in this thread. He has gone backwards this year (he has played a few good games in the last 6 weeks, probably 2-3/6).

Malceski without doubt, there is no question is the most improved player.
Other nominees:
Schmidt (has had a good year)
Barlow (improved reserves form out of sight to get into seniors)
Jolly (improved work around the ground and goal kicking ability)

For me it's his accuracy this year, it's been great to see him slotting them through with more confidence. I doubt we'll ever see him win too many games off his own boot these days, but he's just all class, all the time.

Definately,Malceski,no contest. The rest are a hard ask.Until we get younger
players in the side on a constant basis, its hard to define, as the older established players just do what they do week in week out.Sometimes they play well, sometimes not. If Barlow had been given a chance earlier in the season, hes my man! Seamlessly slotted into the team, versatile, and a good football brain.

What about Nick Davis.
Nick has always had the talent, always had the accuracy in front of goals.
But this year his work rate has been terrific, and not only that but his ability to take contested marks has improved out of sight so that he has become a much more well rounded forward. He's not just a one trick pony anymore.

Do you actually watch the games, because those 2 you mentioned you cant be serious. The most improved player has to be "MELCHO" by a country mile.

As soon as i saw this tread i automaticly thaught of James Brayshaw shouting

'THE MALCHO"

your most improved my a mile, a possible AA, reward for a cracker season.

Malceski fairly easily for me. He has been outstanding, probably our 3rd best player this season, which given he was probably 20th last year, says it all.

I think O'Keefe has shown flashes of going to a higher level also, which is a great sign, he really looks a better player when Hall doesnt play, which is very promising for the future.

McVeigh is the WORST player there is.
His the biggest Girl eva I think that Tadhg, Amon, Adam .S, Brett & Leo r the BEST players eva!!!!!:)
:D

That's my opinion, no need to bag it. You have yours, I have mine. Have been to every home game this year and a number in Melbourne, so dont even go there. Malceski is good, but I dont reckon he is the most improved this year - maybe last year. He has probably been more consistent this year.

I thought this was a MOST IMPROVED thread, not a "WHO IS THE BEST PLAYER EVA" thread. Could be wrong.

i tend to agree....he was outstanding the first 8 weeks this season, continuing from last season, which he was definitely among the most improved, but this year there's probly been more expectation on him, specially with tadgh going down, and as i've said elsewhere, he's probly levelled off a bit the second half of the season, has been consistent but also had a few lesser games....and i think he's carrying an injury
