Game Day NAB Cup Game 1 - Brisbane Lions v St Kilda @ Burpengary

Hey guys what was the stream quality like last night? Do you know if that was provided by your club or the AFL?

Thanks.
Probably a step up from what you may be used to from NEAFL. Camera work/video quality not too bad - audio kept dropping out, but as Terry Wallace was special comments (play by play guy was an unknown to me, made a few mistakes but serviceable) that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. No interruptions for me, but I think that depends on your internet connect as others I spoke to had connection issues.

I don't think anyone will be able to make a definitive call on that for a couple of years at least. It baffles me that fans on both sides of the fence are making those calls so early.

The only sure thing is that at this point in time Beams is the highest quality player of the four.

Whether De Goey will be as good or surpass Beams is up for debate, but shit, the kid showed some bloody good signs on Thursday night.

I think it will likely end up being a decent trade from our end. Greenwood seems to compliment our midfield nicely, and Crisp is showing good signs (although I'm not completely sold on him). It's early days with De Goey, but I trust the judgement of Hine on that. I don't think he's ever stuffed up a top ten pick in the last decade he's been in charge

When players walk out on your club all you can hope for is getting something back in return... seems pointless in making comparsions as that argument can go around in circles. As a pies supporter I would be very very happy to have Degoey in the team...kid looks like a gem

Thank you! Do you think I'd be able to hook it up to a 65" or would I be better off on a computer?

It was good to have Rog back killing contests in defence. It was a different combo back there so they'll take a while to gel.

The main thing we need to watch: Rog often ends up running with the ball, scanning half forward for an option. Oppositions want that.

Saints seemed to be happy to cut off his handball options but make him kick long. They wouldn't let him run straight forward, but they were happy to sag off him when he ran sideways or backwards.

We'd want to work on making sure it's always Claye or Rich or someone else that takes that transition kick.

We need to pretend he's a ruckman that has just taken a mark and needs to feed off a handball to a passing half-back or midfielder...we're simply not working hard enough if we let this continue once the season starts.

Yep, super excited about the kid. The way he grabbed the tap out, shrugged off Mitchell and kicked it to Gault at the top of the goal square in the last quarter was a sight to behold.
Short term at least though, you guys are well ahead with the recruitment of Beams (provided he can keep his nose clean).

I'm surprised by all the negativity on here. I thought yesterday was exactly what we were looking for - a chance to blow out the cobwebs of summer and start getting back into the groove of footy, with no injuries. Served it's purpose imho.
My thoughts:
- Paps & Claye were surprise standouts for me
- Seeing Dan Rich pump a ball 60m again was a highlight
- Merrett is rusty as a defender and will take some time to get his mojo back, but I think he will get there
- Paddy McCartin will be a terrific forward - just knows where to go (good running patterns and positioning) and how to use his body, so once he's AFL-fit/strong he will be hard to handle
- Archie Smith & Jason Holmes are phenomenal athletes, their spring at the ruck contest is amazing, but it remains to be seen whether either can learn how to navigate a marking contest
- Burpengary may be far away for many of you, but it's a top notch place to watch footy! Surface looked fantastic, plenty of other ovals for kids to run around on if they weren't interested in the game, and lovely hilly banks that allowed you to sit on the slope on the wing and watch the game. Highly recommended!

Leppa must've thought the same this as he led our TOG with 97% game time :D

Am I.. Wat? Clearly not if I have no idea what you're referencing (or what I'm unknowingly referencing) :D

The commentary stream was periodically interrupted with bursts of Phil Collins.

LOL. Oh well - can always mute and chuck on the AFL Live radio.

I watched it on a 42" without feeling it was out of place.

Okay I'll give it a go. I think Internet connection may play a bit part in the individual viewing.

Thanks for all your help guys - just so excited footy is back I'm watching anything and everything :)

See you later this year.

Fair to say Collingwood would have been well ahead with Degoey & an untouchable eg Aish/Rockliff/Hanley/Rich etc. Also dont forget to include Watts in any deal comparisons.

If you can, 65" should be more then fine.

Quality was good.

My Quick View of the Match (watched via stream).

Pros -
  • Daniel Rich looks nothing like a player that missed all last year and will be huge for us this year :D
  • D.Beam was excellent - which really isn't a surprise, what a pick-up!
  • No Injuries! (feel bad for WCE and WB) fingers crossed this continues.
  • McGrath looks a player, certainly didn't look out of his league :thumbsu:
  • Sam Mayes showed some good signs in the Fwd position - hopefully he's tasked with that position in Rnd 1.
Cons -

  • Those bloody kids screaming into the ground effect mics randomly throughout the coverage - my ears!
  • Sloppy disposal across the ground - I'll be expecting this to improve dramatically as we move to Rnd 1.
  • Close's leading patterns still need work, for a guy with such a good tank I'd like to see him take his marker for a bit of a journey.
  • Leuy will need to be eased back into it - Martin's domination around the stoppages from the end of last year was a notable absence.
Overall I'd mark it a 6/10 - A solid hitout for the lads with several things for the coaches to work on with the players moving towards round one. After our NAB cup win a few years back and the subsequent round one shocker I'm not too fussed on the pre-season matches as long as everyone gets through them in one piece.

Looking forward to watching the lads vs Sydney and looking for improvements.

Go Lions!

I Chromecasted to my tele, it was fine, a bit below the non-hd broadcast quality but watchable.

I don't understand why it can't be televised on Fox out at Burpengary. Would it be for lack of interest in the game?

RE: the game...

Fairly low entertainment value but from a football perspective was good to see a few of the younger players do quite well!

  • I didn't even know who Mcgrath was until he kept popping up - looks the goods.
  • Liked seeing a few old faces back in the team, especially Rich who I think is in for a big 2015!
  • Great seeing Merrett down back. May take a few games but I think as the season progresses those that are criticising him at present will see how valuable he is to the team.
  • Its very exciting to have D. Beams running round for us. This'll sound like a dis on our other players (and I know it was our first NAB cup game) but a lot of the time he seemed a caliber above most of our guys. Mainly for the simple fact that he can consistently hit targets and pick out the right option. I think we will reap the added bonus of his skill in that it will hopefully help some of our younger players develop.
Here is to a big 2015. Go Lions!
