Nathan Brown (Richmond) could we use him

Up forward we are fine. We have plenty of forward options.

It is our defence and ruck stocks that need attention. With this years PSD looking very poor with ruckman, I would rather see us recruit a defender: Macguire, Roe, Macdonald or Jesse Smith could turn out to be handly players.

nah wouldnt think the hawks will take him - not with rioli up forward. and ossy.

chris bryan or daniel gilmore - welcome to hawthorn

my choice - gilmore cause he can also play down back in case we get an injury in the backline and if a ruckman goes down, he can cover that too.

People, Nathan Brown is not another hack delisted by a struggling club, he is a 32 year old bloody champion.

Not many of the other players mentioned in Hawthorn's potential recycled players could argue at one point they were the best player getting around.

Nathan Brown was second in the competition for goal kicking in a crap side that was 8 and 2 before his season was ended with that nasty break. He was the best player in the comp that year up to that point. We all know what happened to Richmond that year and hell in the years since.

That broken bone has meant two things.. 1) he missed pretty much two full seasons - which would mean he may be able to go on a little longer than normal and 2)He has taken some time in getting back and with Richmond's woes he hasn't had the opportunities he did previously.

I'm guessing after the 2008 season the Hawks would have wanted/expected Stuey Dew to be around for three more seasons. He provided some skills and an ability to kicks goals and to generally have a impact on the game. Stuey Dew is now gone. Nathan Brown would step into those shoes perfectly. He has top shelf skills, he would always attract a premium backman, he can turn a game, he would be playing a lead up and crumbing role (probably a bit of Mark Williams and Stuey Dew) and be an absolutely perfect fit along side Roughy and Buddy. Other than Rioli (who while being a friggin beauty) who isn't a massive goal kicker and may be spending more time in the guts, we really haven't had any one for a long long time that plays a genuine crumbing forward role, Browny is that and more.

There are a few things that certainly go against us recruiting him as well:
The Cons:
The dude isn't exactly a spring chicken and at 32, two years out of him is best case (obvious risk associated);
Previous injuries have limited his ability to be that potential game breaker (obvious risk associated);
His salary - he may still want more than the lure of a flag to bring him on board - he'd need Ackers philosophy;
His media sheit and personality - would it detract from the cohesive team environment that we're trying to build;
The left overs of the Angelo Lekkas effect (it's alright Ange we'll only offer him a 1 year deal)
He would cost us picking up a kid (albeit a really bloody late round one)

The Pro's:
He'd only be filling the hole in the list previously used by Dewy;
He'd hopefully be cheap as chips;
He wouldn't be handed a spot and would have to command his position;
The spot on the list would be otherwise likely filled by a spud who would never play a game;
He could kick 40 goals;
He could kick 5 in a Grand Final.

For me the pro's outweigh the cons..

However, Hawthorn will not pick up Nathan Brown. (Hope I'm wrong however)

Oh yes it is as stupid as it sounds.

We have, in no particular order of preference, C Brown, Burgoyne, Hodge, Lewis, Morton, Osborne, Rioli, Savage, Bruest, possibly Peterson and one or two more. Why the F**k would we need N Brown?

If we were in need of a "small forward" with the departure of Willo, then why would we have let him go??

Do you people think before you post, your do you just rabbit on for the sake of it ?? :confused:

Blow it out your arse, hero. It's the silly season, and I said yes contingent on many factors. You don't agree, good for you, I couldn't give a shit what you think. :thumbsu:

Brown was a great player before his leg but hasn't been the same since, and in reality hasn't been near the top small forwards for a few years. It's sad but it's reality. At 32 I don't think it would be worthwhile.

Yes there is a reason they call this silly season.

I'd find it hard to understand why having implemented a stratergy to build our list we're going to abandon it.

It's not like we have a screaming need for a player of his type.
Couple that with age and his outside business interests and you have a player moving into a different phase of his life.

I can only go by his performances with Richmond and what I saw was a player who showed the tell tale signs that the end had come.

He was attempting to cover a lack of leg speed by going to ground in a contest.
He was unable to exert second and third efforts.
His lack of speed prevented him from exerting defensive pressure.
And his kicking had lost much of it's penetration.

Why would we do it to ourselves?

Good one that's funny as.

St. Kilda achieved SFA last year with an injury run you'd sell your soul for and half a list of blow-ins.

Geelong, Harley played 1 game with another club, Mooney and Ottens got there years ago when they were still sh1t and the others don't play seniors, hardly a list built by recycling.

On topic, what would we want with N. Brown??? :eek:

GM there are some quality delisted players who for what reason couldn't make the cut sometimes a change in club & environment can bring the best out of a player Re N Brown not what we want ATM i would rather give Moss or Peterson a Run!

I urge anyone, who seriously considers this an option, to have a bash at listing their first 22 + 3 emergency's for next season.

NOW ........... if you AREN'T already struggling to fit everyone of note in, then I will be surprised!!

^^ Glen Ferrie. I am not actually for or against it at the moment. Really not overly concerned to be honest.

However, in relation to your actual post....(1) You rarely, if ever, have your best 25 available for selection. We certainly never seem to. (2) Nathan Brown, issues aside, is quite a bit better than a lot of our players you would consider in that 25.

Agree MinerBoy some players will blossom some aren't worth it at all but as a club the HFC would be looking at every delisted player to see if any could add something to our list to all those against recycled players yes i No we have mentioned every Tom Dick & Harry that pulled on the boots but history will show us that many players move on successfully to other clubs!

Fair point MinerBoy. Still not convinced that he is better than some of our current 'kids' that could be given game time, however you are definately correct about us not having our best 25 available!
