Narkle will get signed up straight away. I’m not suggesting that is good or bad just how it is. He will likely not start training until selected, which is usually the 1 Dec or thereabouts.

If Jones is LTI, what about the following two names for a train on spot. We can have two players train for every spot available:
  • Baynen Lowe (small forward with Norwood - coached by Rawlings)
  • Sam Toner (overaged medium forward)

According to Twomey we had interest in both.

Might be hard to get players across for a list spot that might not be available. A connection with Rawlings might get Lowe across but Toner would most likely have interest elsewhere.

Let’s see who gets taken today. I think Toner in particular might not be part of this discussion in roughly an hour and a half.

Tbh I think the timeframe around adding Narkle is probably about right in terms of when we’ll know enough about Jones too.

It’ll be interesting to see if anything happens with one of the Irish guys. Wouldn’t even be that surprised if the club just slips it into the Category B rookie nominations today.

Walls got asked about Allan pre draft and said, paraphrasing, "quality prospect but not the type we're looking at".

Didn't he say that after trade period? Pre-draft ... yes ... but a long way out and trying to keep it on the low down. Walls is known for drafting best available, so I wouldn't believe him around a "not the type" argument. The reports from journos in the days/week leading up to the draft were pretty consistent in saying Freo were trying to trade up for Allan. Maybe they were just being lazy and assuming we were after the WA player, but nonetheless the reports had us going after Allan.

6-months ago if you knew this is where we'd have landed up after having 3 first round draft picks, would you be happy? Bolton, Reid, Nicholls and Carr.

It all feels odd - neither good nor bad. This off season could be the stuff up of the century or it could be a masterstroke by Walls.

I remember thinking after the 2016 off-season we were flag-bound in just a year or two...McCarthy, Hill, Kersten and Hamling. We were not. 2018 we get Hogan and Lobb. We were still not.

See how it all washes up I guess.
The second night of draft was boring that is for sure.

The wash up of the past two years:
out:
Schultz, Henry, 12 (Hotton), 14 (Faull), 21 (Trainor)

In:
Sharp, Bolton, Simpson (35, 2023 ND), Reid (17, 2024 ND), Nicholls (34, 2024 ND)

That 12-17 Bracket is very even and includes Hotton, Allan, Reid and Berry all on our radar. None of us know the order we rate them but I get the impression we were comfortable with any. We had one pick in this range and lost two.

Nicholls was in a range not far off Trainor and Faulls. There was a recent article that said WC were hoping to be able to select Trainor at their second pick 30. Faulls seemed to fall in a large range of spots between 10 and 30. Yes both rated ahead of Nicholls but a lot of that has to do with them being ahead development stage wise.

We also added Cooper Simpson. Sharp I’m not the biggest fan but certainly replaced Henry.

I don’t feel anything like post the chaotic trade/draft period of 2018.

Losing gun Neale, adding Hogan, Lobb, missing out on Jordan Clark for speculative Sturt and then trading up to get Valente.

2018 definitely set us back. A few decisions in the lead-up were questionable.

It all seems rather settled and calculated the decisions for 2024. Got to remember we took a longer term view with replacing Shultz. Some wanted a quick fix. We took a future pick which was central to adding in Bolton.

I just can’t see this lending to disaster like 2018.

So West Coast have first pick effectively. If they don’t take Knobel we should be able to have a crack at someone like Toner first then take max with the second
Which I’m confident that they will pass. They have already indicated that Michael Selwood and Cody Burgiel have been invited to train over summer. They need a list spot for this to take place.

I don't think we have list space.

Narkle takes one spot, and Knobel the other.

We have not placed Jones on the LTI yet
Correct. Like Cal says clubs will leave a spot for SSP. We will select Knobel with our first pick and then pass on the second.

Many clubs this year have bypassed the Rookie and added more picks in ND. West Coast being one of them. Probably their last pick 65 they thought Hamish Davis was worth biting the bullet as a late ND rather than Rookie pick. Richmond similar they traded back into the draft for Jasper Alger and gave up their option for rookie pick.

The rookie draft is a joke now. Is essentially a supplementary list giving option for primary list spot flexibility. The majority of the picks will be players re selected following primary list delisting.

Got it in one. Happens every year to both WA and SA clubs. Ergo, there is no information in it.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought the AFL brought in a rule stating that if a club delists a player but commits to taking them in the rookie draft then no other club can pick them.

We went quality over quantity. Got an absolute sure thing in Shai and Reid looks a real talent with class and smarts. Then a couple of projects with huge upside with the later picks. There's no reason Reid can't have an impact at half forward next year.

I don't think that is the case. 99% sure

It just never happens. Clubs normally delist older players, that are of little value to other teams.

Reid moves like a footballer that can translate pretty quickly to AFL level

That only applied the year that the AFL imposed list size restrictions due to covid.
