If we draft Berry we've used three first rounders in one off season for small forwards. Then there's Narkle for free.

We've delisted Emmett - everyone else wasn't remotely close to being a small forward.

It'd be borderline negligent to add another small forward after that and ignore other needs (after adding Bolton) that aren't all that far behind.

1. I don't think we have an AFL quality small forward on our list before Bolton. Switta is proably close, but he can't kick the ball 40m's and lacks a bit of forward nous.
2. Bolton plays a lot of football up the ground, I hope we don't leave him deep in our forward line all game.
3. Hawks play 3 good small forwards, and it works for them.
4. Berry is decent up the ground, and can run through the midfield in time.
5. Not sure Narkle is really a small forward either, he played his best footy in the SANFL in the midfield.

We’re not drafting 2 in one season but it is an area we need more cover in. Berry or another is a must. I recon HBF & KPF the other area we are lacking.

Narkle isn’t a small forward.

We basically replaced Emmett with Bolton & Walters is now our depth. We have Delean & I think Simpson is a mid type rather than small forward.

The issue is having a genuine small forward cover. Bolton will probably be 50/50 mid if we have no injuries.

I think we are still stacked for midfield depth and it is the easiest thing to pickup every year with actual AFL experience.

I'm ok with 14 not being a small forward. As long as neither of 14 or 30 are tall I think its fine.

Preference is an outside mid but it seems the good ones will be gone.

I find it mind boggling that everyone has Port selecting a tall

Unless they truly see Georgi as the 4th tall?

Todd, Georg, Luko, Finlay and Lord

Surely 3 of those 5 will make their KPF stock for the next 8 years (finlay probs not but the other 4)

I'll freely admit that I just want them to take a tall to improve our options, but...

Someone already answered the KPF version but they also needs a proper key back after the moderately successful BZT and failure of Esava.

That said, they also desperately lack quality small forwards outside Rioli so...

The interest in Narkle I think is to replace what we started to get from Henry. I expect Narkle to fill that kind of role, roaming around high forward, wing areas.

So you don't plant any new potatoes because you've already got lots of spuds in your garden?

They did get Richards from Collingwood. Hopefully, they think he will go well.

Outside mid or small forward, and I will be happy.

Berry, then Clarke ticks a lot of boxes for me.

I would have thought the odds of plucking a good mid @30 are much better than getting a genuine class small forward there

Agree on no.5 but I'm not convinced the clubs sees it the same way.

Think you've got to look at medium forwards as well. If you do there's 3-4 guys that are AFL standard already with Cooper Simpson potentially being another.

Hotton has decent speed and explosiveness - plays forward and mid. Seems his recovery is going well. They even took the opportunity for a clean up of his knee and the graft is reportedly healing nicely. Give him good recovery and conditioning time and have him play some WAFL back end of the year. We don’t need him playing straight away.

Twomey reckons he's going to the Eagles now.

Yes would love him to stay at Souths.
We signed Hughes. Have you heard anything about Hamish Free who was delisted.
Yeah Free's returned as well. Also got Jamaine Jones & Trey Ruscoe, a bloke from Port Melbourne and a couple from the SW.

Anyhoo, enough about the Souths 2025 premiership team. This fred's all about the Joeberries.

I agree with Sturt, but I don't think Frederick and Switta kick enough goals.

I think they could be pushed higher up the ground, if we had good small forwards.

I can't help but feel Switta, Frederick, Simpson are really mids pushed into a small forward role due to lack of other options, and they don't kick enough goals.

Sturt is a natural forward, who should kick 30-40 goals next year if he is fit.
Same with Bolton.

I think something like this could work, with Bolton spending 20-30% of his time in midfield.
Especially if they went 5 on the bench, then having Switta coming of the bench and playing a mix of midfield and forward would work very well.

Bolton - 7th forward
Sturt Treacy Jackson
Berry Amiss Hannaford

Anyway, I will be very happy if we get Berry and then we can see how we look next year.

We really need Richmond to go tall with one of their back to back picks. Problem is they could get a similarly rated tall by sitting and waiting for their picks after ours. And that brings Berry right into the mix.

It seems like the top 13 players to be picked is largely set, just a matter of the order - Lalor, O'Sullivan, Ashcroft, Smith, Draper, Langford, Allan, Lombard, Kako, Tauru, Travaglia, Lindsay, Smillie. So then we've got...

14. Richmond -
15. West Coast -
16. Port Adelaide -

It does seem like Port go tall, probably Armstrong or Shanahan. West Coast seems to be firming on Hotton. The question then is Richmond...they'd be in prime position to go Berry or Hotton, probably only if a tall if they're worried about Port - and it seems like they have different tastes.

Leaves us with either Murphy Reid (who I do think is a very good player) or going 'early' on another forward type - Dattoli, Hynes, Hannaford, Alger. Maybe even brings Oliver into the first round mix for us. I reckon we'll be on the phone trying to move up, even just a couple of spots.

"Sources told foxfooty.com.au the Dockers are considering moving a few spots up the order to West Coast’s selection, which would help them secure one of Hotton, Reid or Berry and hand the Eagles another 2024 draft pick, most likely in the second round. It comes amid a strengthening link between Hotton and the Eagles, per rival clubs."

wouldnt say freddy is a mid pushed into small forward but in saying that im not sure what he really is. fumbles too much to be a supplier further up the ground and is too dodgy running into goals to be a finisher. hope to see him take a step up this season, hopefully with less pressure on him with the addition of bolton he can thrive

Yeah, we really need for it to be known North are going to trade for one of GWS's picks if Richmond go small at 14. Feels like the only way to stop them (rightfully) holding off till 18 for a tall.

Still, I really like Reid as well and happy for him to be the consolation prize if we miss Berry
