Wilkie is only a key defender because we have no other decent options.

Carlisle is gone. We tried to bring in Frawley but it didn't work. Clav was tried but wasn't up to it.

You could argue Allison is the answer but he was drafted more as a key forward and was shifted back after struggling in that role.

I think Ratten would love another good key defender so he doesn't have to rely on third talls or undersized players to fill that hole.

Mist that have analysed our list seem to agree which is why Gibcus continues to be linked to us.

Not true regarding Allison. As it was explained to me from someone in the know, our recruiters identified him as having as having several elite CHB traits, and we drafted him for the long term as a CHB replacement.

St Kilda's draft needs this year in order should be

1. Quality inside or balanced mid
2. Key defender
3. Outside run

We may be blessed this year with the likely inclusion of both Owens and Windhager with late picks. Both very good runners with explosive speed that should help fill our need for outside run. Both have played at either end of the ground with some time spent in the midfield.

That leaves the need for a quality mid and key defender. Ideally we see one of those top rated mids slide to our pick and then we can look at trading back into the draft a little later to target a key defender.

If that doesn't eventuate and Gibcus slides we must consider taking him with our first or weigh up how likely the remaining players around that pick are at becoming a quality midfielder at AFL level.

I think after Ward, Hobbs and Erasmus it becomes a bit of a lottery with a mixture of players that aren't quite mids or have a few question marks on how they will go at AFL level.

I'd still be considering Sonsie early though or would consider trading down if we felt we could still get him later.

Giants will come knocking for that pick if Gibcus is still there.

Games i have watched him play at Sandy he doesn't know where to position himself miles and miles away from it.
Waste of a pick imo, clubs not in the position to be using our 1st pick on a long term maybe

Well he trained mostly with the forwards through pre season, played the practice matches forward and spent time between forward and wing in his first couple of VFL games.

Gallagher was also quoted ins saying that we were targetting key forward depth when we took him in the draft.

Not saying we didn't see him as a versatile type but we clearly saw him forward to start with.

I like the sound of Zac Taylor, if we don't get that gun mid early I like the idea of grabbing Nasiah, Gibcus, Andrew or Sinn and trading back in for Taylor if he slides

Sinn before Gibcus
I think if Gibcus were still available there's a fair chance we could trade down with the Giants and still get him.

If not then Sonsie or Goater

Freo are apparently hoping for a future first for that pick 19, maybe we could work out a deal that sees the Giants future first going to the and 19 coming to us.

Could we just be playing him back as an educational switch? Learn how the defenders play to be able to beat them. Then after a season of that switch him back forward with a bit more knowledge and, more importantly, muscle.

Seems to be the same plan the Suns have had for Jack Lukosius.

Not sure if we should follow that though ahaha

I don't think this is entirely accurate. There's always need for a mix of players taken in and we got 3 ready made prospects in Crounh, Higgins and Highmore. We also took Sharman in the MSD and it turns out he was ready to go.

2 trades and 2 draftees that made an impact is a good result, specially when we fed in Byrnes, Bytel and Connolly that season too.
It's legitimate enough that we took Allison (also Heath) since the writing was on the wall with Claverino. We also have no idea where our list strategy is at and the acquisition of Highmore is testament to that as it was the last position anyone thought we needed, yet he was really good and no one would take that pick back right now.

I've said it plenty that 2023 is our start date. By then we'll have all the fore mentioned kids firing, maybe another King, plus one or two from this year and hopefully our boy Matty might come on a bit in the next 18 months TBD.

If your mate Josh Battle nails a spot then there's nothing to worry about anyway.

You’re right about one thing we have no idea where our list strategy is neither does the club, our list has to many holes in it . Battle might have half chance if he is not played on the wing, let’s hope the coaches do their job properly this Pre season and players don’t waste the 1st half of the year not knowing what their roles are

its funny that you say that we have been watching these kids since then, so it boggles my mind how we drafted Patty Mc when the King brothers were in the system already and linked to us. Thats all i will say on the matter.

How were the King twins linked to us in anyway other than they barracked for the club?

Not to mention that both of them could have (should have) been taken by GC before our pick.

A fit & firing Paddy would have come in handy then… and still would be now.

That's different to the club not knowing it's own list strategy.

I think if you compare the list at the end of next week verses 3 years ago you might see some marked improvement.
Club list strategy is not good the list has to many holes and list management has people inside the club confused

I'm definitely in love with the Sinn pick. Think he has some qualities we sorely lack despite being AnOtHeR HaLf BaCk fLaNkEr.

Reckon Charlie Dean will be at the perfect part of the draft for us to trade back into also.

Not sure if it's been mentioned here, but Schlensog didn't nominate for the draft. Assume he will be going to his club of choice who has shown interest as a DFA or SSP selection.
Probably been said but hey, No one is more Saint than Sinner eh?

Just checked - Allison got 3 less kicks than Battle did in their respective first years with the club.

I think the club saw/sees him simmilar to Noah Balta. Being so gifted athletically we can mould him exactly how we like. Definetly looked much more comfortable as a defender last year. Hopefully a full and consistent vfl season goes ahead.

Battle was pretty good in his first year. Kicked a bag of 4 early from memory and had a few other good games in there. Even made his debut in his first year while still at school

I don’t even know which thread I’m in here but Jimmy Webster tackling 2 oppos in one hit will forever be one of my biggest highlights.
