Honestly? If one of them is still on the list in 4 years i'll be happy.
That’s setting a very low bar. It would be a terrible result if two guys we’re expecting to go top 30 in a nation draft aren’t both still on the list in 4 years. It seems like Windhager is rated highly by plenty of clubs as well.

I don’t get drafting a player who relies on others to get him the ball because if that doesn’t happen you end up having to move them to half back. Have we not seen this movie already.

If NWM turns out to get less of the pill than Ben long who can also play when he occasionally gets the ball the melts will be epic. Too much SA in out team as well, that can’t be a good thing. A couple of injuries, bing signs on at GC and it will be all aboard the

Ben Long doesn’t use the ball anywhere near as well as NWM.

Not saying it’s not a potential concern, but 15 touches from a guy like Wangmil could be the equivalent of 25 from someone with messy disposal.

We very badly need more polish in the team.

IMO, 25 messy disposals is worth less than 1 elite disposal as more often than not the ball gets turned over as a result.
This was the problem with Dunstan and still is with DMac IMO.

Indeed!

Although we do have Max King

Owens thinks he can play inside, we gave up a lot of money for Crouch and drafted Bytel who by all accounts was a 1st rounder before injury. Between them and 1 or 2 of the names you listed getting fit I'm not worried about our ability to win the ball, I'm much more worried about what we do with it

I'm talking about us (attempting to) find another truly elite mid to partner Steele.

I'm talking about us getting a petracca or oliver (or steele) level player.

Sure we could try our luck getting lightning to strike twice and hope that ~2nd rounder rated kids like owens can prove every recruiter wrong like steele has done and become truly elite.

But what steele has done is a massive outlier- the vast majority of elite mids come from top draftpicks.

Yes the draft is a lottery, but history shows that if you want elite mids- you need to draft them with high picks.

Secondly, you continue to push this narrative that crouch is on obscene money....
600x 4 (before covid cuts which now make it closer to 550k) with a trigger for a 5th year is hardly "a lot of money" for an experienced mid who won a bnf in a team that played in a grand final.

If a mid pushed past him and he was relegated to the VFL it would be no different to what happened with jake carlisle.
Not ideal, but hardly a big deal.

It would be a very good thing infact if, in 2 years time; a guy the quality of crouch was being kept out of the team by a 20 year old we draft tonight.
That would mean we are a much much better team than we are now- because that kid is clearly an absolute jet.

In that context, whose gonna care that crouch is being paid 550k a year in the magoos?

Blake acres was doing practically that on 500k a year and noone cared.

While we all ponder, who our 1st round pick will be,and I am sure we will get a good one with our new recruiters
I am looking forward to the second half of the 1st round, and watch with interest that Owens name is not called out
NWM,(by the looks) then,Owens and Windhager plus 1 other tomorrow night sounds like a good Draft to me.
Then the Rookie Draft and DFA.on Friday,
Go Saints

This morning I ran into an old contact who helps out an AFL club in recruiting , and I asked him who Hobbs is more like - J Selwood or Dunstan. He said “more like Dusty Martin than those two”. Couldn’t get much else out of him apart from him rating Callaghan as best in it , and not rating Erasmus at all. He reviews their game recordings.

Or are you just pretending to give a sh*t about one, to make the point that you don't give a sh*t about the other.

Noone's gonna get an eating disorder from pigging out on dorito's while waiting for their name to get called.
or perhaps I've known more 18 year olds at the end of the draft that want it very badly and have been strung along through u18s footy so they feel like a chance then have been devastated when not taken.
I haven't had the good fortune to know someone at the elite end where that is not a problem because they not only know they will be taken but whom it is likely to be.

Reports at the time say he is on 700k which is more than 500k, but the money is less important than the fact we have spent a lot of time trading in midfielders, Jones and Hanneberry too, we need quality in other areas of the ground. It's not like we add one inside mid to the mix and we are perfect, so people are going to have different priorities in plugging our numerous gaps. For me thats an elite ball-user. But I'm also not convinced an Oliver or Petracca exists at pick 11. You are right to say you need a high draft pick for them, which is why they were taken at picks 2 and 4. Pick 11 is not likely to be our saviour

I completely agree with this sentiment, but i think you really need a top 5 pick to get the "sure thing" gun mids that you're talking about (eg Bont, Macrae, Petracca, Oliver, Dusty, Wines etc). Where we are in this draft it becomes much more speculative and a "best available" strategy is best

OK, at the high risk this post will cause groans of anguish and some "precise" feedback, why do some draft lists have us at pick 9 and some at 11? I presume we're at 11 because of AFL funny business that doesn't give us any advantages, but why would journos keep publishing lists that have us at 9?

We officially have 9, but it will be pushed back 2 places when Daicos and Darcy are bid on

Two father sons will push us back once they are bidded on

He's not on 700k a year mate.

Proof = adelaide got third tier free agent compo for him.
That ain't happening on 700k x 4 + 1.

Edit: also reports at the time say 600k too.

As for the next petracca or oliver not being there at pick 11 this year:
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Why turn the possibility of us not snagging the next tracc or oliver at 11 into a certainty by not even trying?

"Despite widespread reports, SEN.com.au can reveal Crouch stands to earn more than $700,000 a season at St Kilda."
I don't know what to tell you, obviously I haven't seen the books but that was what was reported.

Sure, we can take a risk, but on who? Give me an available inside mid that is worth going after,I'm not really sold on any besides Hobbs who won't be there
