I'm not sure.

What I do know is that there is no point having an oval not fit to actually host matches, whether that's for our AFL sides, or for community football

The original plan had us having a genuinely useful second oval with the size and orientation of the MCG allowing us to train in some sort of simulated environment on the ground we have to play on to win the flag.

This was then downgraded to a Docklands-sized oval, a huge downgrade but at least still viable for matches

Now the ground is so pathetic they can't even draw realistic 50m arcs or a center square on the cartoon diagram. It'll be a glorified carpark and kick to kick field

Have to wonder what the point of the 2nd oval is. Maybe if men and women are training at same time and one group requires a full oval. Otherwise it just looks like a key plank has been compromised to the point of uselessness.

Nah, I always thought two full-sized ovals felt like a want more than a need. You've not heard me say otherwise.

I'm more interested that the building is state of the art.

Why would the building be more important than match sim on an oval with the same dimensions that flags are won at? Does nicks become a better coach in a new office or players lift harder because the gym walls are new? I’m not saying there’s no gains by building a new indoor facility, but surely it’s arguable how much more important they are than actual training grounds.

It's big enough

to attract funding

The competitive advantage by having state of the art facilities seems higher to me than having an oval be a few feet longer.

The MCG doesn't curve to the left or run downhill. Slightly different ground sizes can be accommodated and frankly playing a slightly larger ground shouldn't confuse a professional sportsman.

Just my opinion.

What competitive advantages are brought about by the facilities?

Have the last ten or so Premiers have a training ground similar to the MCG?

Yes most of them play a lot of home games there. But did they have capacity to run match sims on MCG sized ovals.

Geelong train on one of the worst shaped grounds in the league.

Ideally that second ground is more adaptable, and after the roadworks in 10 years time it will be.

But it should not be a deal breaker. If that important, hire a differ oval (Salisbury Oval one of the biggest in Australia) for such match sims

Great news we can start this project.

Collingwood - Home ground is the MCG, and also have MCG sized training ground
Geelong - Yes, they have an MCG sized oval they use at Deakin University
Melbourne - Home ground is the MCG
Richmond - Home ground is the MCG
West Coast - Yes, second oval the size of the MCG (although this was constructed after their 2018 flag win)
Western Bulldogs - No
Hawthorn - Home ground is the MCG, new facility they are building has two full size ovals

Second this.
This year we lost two games at the 'G by a total of 6 points against the eventual Premier and another Top 4 side, so ultimately it's not the oval dimensions that's the issue and why I softened my stance on the MCG sized second oval.
IMO, dealing with the colosseum-type atmosphere at the 'G during finals / the GF is the biggest hurdle.
Would we have loved to have an MCG sized second oval - Absolutely.
Is it the end of the world if we don't an MCG sized second oval - No.
Post the T2D project in 2031, we will have 2 x AFL sized ovals for our teams to train on.
Cannot wait for our Thebby journey to get started!

The AFL requires training surfaces to be a minimum size for the extra funding, but i wonder if there's any requirements for the shape.

instead of a normally shaped oval that has been scaled down, i think it would be better if we could get a training surface that was 2/3 (or even half) the length of a full sized oval, but the dimensions are kept the same.

You still can't run match sims on the oval, but train for set plays for entering/exiting the 50 with proper MCG dimensions, and still do all the other training sets you would do on the mini oval.

Extremely naive point of view. The difficulty with the MCG is its width. The difficulty with Kardinia park is its lack of width. Results at both venues support the fact it is difficult for visiting teams to adapt.

Subiaco used to be a problem because of its length. SCG for its lack of length. Same thing.

I think they should increase the size of the existing oval actually but they seem intent on replicating AO with that one.

Could they repaint the lines or mark out an MCG sized oval in the week leading up to an MCG game? Maybe even have both sets of lines down but in different colours for Adelaide oval and the MCG.

The second oval will be good to keep congestion down. Can run skills drills with the whole squad spaced out or have everyone taking set shots at the same time.

The big advantage is the home games at MCG. The crowd noise and circling breeze created by the stands also an issue for us who rarely play there.

Is Olympic Park (Collingwood)on City Road the same size as the G. Excluding the running track.

Worth noting that it is completely open to the public when no training on. My brother in law uses it as his running track.

I feel we will get the bigger second oval once the roadworks are done. In 10 years.

Worth noting with this site we have another 10 or so years being hamstrung by building work in the area. Something that is near complete at West Lakes.
