Wonder how outraged people will be by the 26 allocation 🤣
I think clubs have to be extremely selective with the numbers they 'retire', otherwise you'll end up with blokes wearing 49, 50 etc.

14 & 37 are the only numbers worthy of doing so, and both are active for us now, so it should just be 'play on' with 23, 26 etc

Yep just numbers.

I quite like it if say a JPK retired and you have a story that he has asked for 12 to go to a particular player, otherwise just reissue.

Agreed, though that didn't work out too well with Goodes & Elijah Taylor LOL

The other part that rarely gets mentioned - but is at least being acknowledged in the article about Bowman - is that the players choose the numbers themselves. So when some kid ends up with this esteemed number, it's often made out like the club bestowed this huge honour on them, when it was likely just an 18 year old guy going "hell yeah Buddy's number is free!!!"

I'm not especially thrilled with Dattoli taking over number 18. Just adds to the "new Konstanty" vibe for me.

Na don't mind it, apparently was the one he wanted anyway.

More surprised they gave the #23 out this year to a first year player

Why. I once was in a conversation with Steve Wright saying how good it is that we finally have a good 26 and he replied never worried him as it didn't help him get a kick

Hahaha that's gold

It's true though

Yeah to be honest numbers are just that, it's a bit different in the NBA when there's like 5 blokes on the court, but there's 22 blokes plus 3 emergencies every week in the AFL, you can't retire a million numbers. I'd have no issue retiring a great for a year but I couldn't care less if they don't to be honest

Curious who decides the numbers, do the players choose a preference?
The current players will be given the chance to change their numbers if they want. The new players then choose amongst themselves with whatever numbers are left.

It means Jake Lloyd has had 11 chances to change from number 44 and has stuck with it every time LOL.

I thought they dropped them all in the bush and first back to the locker got the number

I prefer the "new Jesse" vibe.

I honestly don't care about which number a player chooses/given when they start out. Its up to them to make it their own. History shows most won't make much impact at all.

What I do get a thrill about is when a player comes along that adds to the history of a number.
