Did I hear that we are going to be given the Northern Territory as our Academy zone, or is that just something I dreamt up?

It was something in the media a few weeks ago.

Whether it is true or not is another thing entirely.

Also it appeared that it was the NT excluding Darwin.

Giving us the NT as an NGA is a nonsense.

We had all of Tassie which is an hour flight and we were unable to manage it properly. What do we really think the outcome is going to be? NT is like 25 times the size of Tassie and further away with a population half the size. Of which is you exclude Darwin you exclude 50% of that population. So where does that lands us 25% the population of tassie to draw on but over vast distances that would be hard and expensive to cover.

If offered it, the pragmatic answer is to say no. If the NGA is something we need to fund we would be much much better off funnelling any funds we would have spent on the NT into the small slice of Melbourne we have. THe ROI would be significantly more.

9News Melbourne chief football reporter Tom Morris revealed that North Melbourne is preparing to raid the Northern Territory to receive first pick on all their pathway players coming through the ranks.

North Melbourne Academy participants must meet the following age criteria:

Generational Roos: Children (all ages) of any past North Melbourne player
Junior Roos supported by Werribee Football Club: Boys & girls aged 13 and under
Rising Roos: Boys & girls aged 14-16
Emerging Roos: Boys & girls aged 16-19
Elite Roos: Boys & girls aged 16-19
To qualify as an NGA athlete:

Male players must identify as Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and/or Multicultural (participant born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas) and reside in the council areas below.
Any female player who is from Tasmania.
Non-NGA eligible athletes are all other players.

NGA-eligible players must live in the following council areas:

City of Melbourne (Kensington, Flemington, North Melbourne, Parkville, Carlton, West Melbourne, Docklands)

They're in the west/southwest. Eynesbury is the only one that currently has a population, they're all pretty much planned suburbs in anticipation of booming population. Cocoroc in particular reported 0 residents at the 2021 census, so hardly a footy factory.

Actually Cocoroc is a town that disappeared rather than a planned suburb. It is located on the sewerage farm and used to be a thriving town housing workers on the farm and their families. In the first half of the 20th century it had its own schools, shops and footy teams but the town disappeared as the farm became less labour intensive. We won't get any footballers from there in my life time but the bird life is fantastic
