Heidelberg coach Vinny Dattoli discusses why the Tigers won’t become complacent
Nine straight wins, three straight 100-point wins, belting second-placed Hurstbridge but Heidelberg remains focused and it’s only getting harder for rivals.
Don’t expect Heidelberg to get complacent after smashing Hurstbridge by 100 points in Saturday’s NFNL Division 1 top-of-the-table clash.
The Tigers make the mid-season turn at 9-0 with an average winning margin of 55 points after giving the Bridges a football lesson at Ben Frilay Oval.
“I said on the weekend, 100-point losses can turnaround quickly and 100-point wins, if you don’t keep your finger on the pulse it can come back and bite you as well,” coach Vinny Dattoli said.
“We’re so method driven that is occupies a lot of the boys brains, I know it’s boring and cliche.
“We try to be extremely repetitive in what we do but the gamestyle still excites the boys, which is good to hear from them.
“We do what we do and have had some really good results obviously, but we’re no where near ahead of ourselves.”
The 25.14 (164) to 9.10 (64) victory was Heidelberg’s third straight by 100 points or more.
Only Montmorency (one point in Round 2) has come within five goals of the two-time defending premier.
Nathan Honey became the first Division 1 player to boot 10 goals this season, while Keenan Posar (35) and Dylan Clarke (34) led the competition in disposals and Luke Bunker had a round-high 14 clearances.
Zane Barzen booted five goals as 11 different Tigers hit the scoreboard.
However, Clarke and Barzen will miss the next month as they head overseas.
Dattoli said the nine straight wins was pleasing for a number of reasons.
“We were extremely pleased with the result, they were the second side and really challenging,” he said.
“We don’t look at the 100 points, I know people might not believe that, but the effort around the contest was as good as it’s been.
“To have a clean sheet at the half-way mark is extremely pleasing because there was a lot of noise at the start of the year, losing Sam Gilmore, Matt Smith and Tom Sullivan.
“We’ve (moved on) really well, encouraging guys to play different roles – Clarky has become a full-time midfielder for us and has been a massive win.
“Luke Bunker has got his fitness to a whole new level and is reaping the reward.
“There’s been a lot of growth in our side from guys that have played in two premierships already and as we do, we’ve brought some young guys in for the ride.
“Nathan kicking 10 goals is great for him
“He started a bit slow but is finding his feet … after a year in the VFL, he’s a very important player so having him back is a massive plus because his intensity and energy is off the charts.”
Ominously for rivals looking to end the Tigers’ streak, the club now plays eight of the final nine games at home after Warringal Park’s redevelopment.
“We’ve done the hard yards playing eight of nine games away, and come out of that really well, and now we get seven in a row,” Dattoli said.
“It gives us a good opportunity to hone in on the way we want to play knowing finals are played at Preston, which is a similar sized ground.”
Heidelberg hosts North Heidelberg on Saturday, the Bulldogs now joint second after defeating Banyule by one point.
If Wilson qualifies for finals, then shut the gates it’s over.I’m guessing Lachie Wilson
It’s over now. They won’t lose a game between now and GF.If Wilson qualifies for finals, then shut the gates it’s over.
Heidelberg vs Keilor who would win?
Keilor results are unbelievable. I’d find it hard to believe Heidelberg would do similar in that compHeidelberg vs Keilor who would win?
You also found it hard to believe Heidelberg beating Hurstbridge according to the tipping comp.Keilor results are unbelievable. I’d find it hard to believe Heidelberg would do similar in that comp
Have to try a few roughies to get back into it.You also found it hard to believe Heidelberg beating Hurstbridge according to the tipping comp.
Fair enoughHave to try a few roughies to get back into it.
Keilors results are unheard of in premier division footy
Fair enough
HB injury list to quality players is growing.
Eltham chance of an upset this week.
Hberg are $1.10 imo.Just my opinion but I think Keilor are about $1.03 to win that flag. Heidelberg whilst having a perfect season and hammering bridges, I still think a team or two could just have a day out and pull something out of their backside.
Maybe tomorrow will give us some clue if there is any challenges left outside mont, who would need to overcome Preston city oval hoodoo to get close.
Hberg are $1.10 imo.
They are still missing a handful of players missing from week to week with VFL commitments. Wilson (1), Edmonds (1), De Bolfo (2), Tomasiello (3), Thompson (4), Maher (5) and McKay (6) and haven't played at max points this year so should be able to fit the majority of them in.
Well Wilson, Edmonds & De Bolfo get back in without trouble as they are all low points. Sier definitely comes in too, then they can probably pick 2 out of Tomasiello, Thompson, Maher and McKay.Looks like Maher, Edmends, De Bolfo & McKay played against Hursty. They were missing Sier though, who is a regular.
Could fit Wilson and maybe 1-2 more in with points, pending who they dropped.
