If the right player isn't swapped out for Duffin though, our problems in defence will just be exacerbated. Here's a theory I floated in this thread a month ago:

Might I add, that sentence is six words too long. We simply get away with a slow backline against the teams who can't match us further up the park.

We fall behind on the scoreboard whenever we're only breaking even in I50s. Our solution to that, to date, has been to just dominate the I50s (note how we won the stat 28-20 in the final v Collingwood last year, still only beat them by 2 points).

The personnel in the squad is there to shore up our defence so they fare better under siege on the rare instances when required. But it means making some pretty tough selection calls now which couldn't have been made after Adelaide smacked us in 2019.
like the idea to replace Hardiman with Duffin and go more mobile in defence

I saw some chat last night that this was the best quality game in AFLW so far. I haven’t seen enough to judge, but the way Melbourne played in the second quarter to attack and nullify a strong opposition was probably the best AFLW quarter I’ve seen.

Their effective passing game was more consistent than ours, their intercept defence and (legal) spoiling was more consistent than ours. North put some nice play together but across the game it felt like we were scrambling while they were cruising.

I so wish we had completed the comeback and I was filthy about it last night, but a lot of the things that were the difference were in our control.

This has probably already been mentioned but worth repeating. One thing that wasn't in our control was the whistle of that idiot umpire who gave the 50 metre penalty to Paxman, for the "incorrect" return of the footy. Our girl threw the ball to where Paxman was standing, but she just kept walking back. Made no effort to try and catch the ball and instead milked it. Umpires need to be much better than that and work our what players are trying to do.

Pretty shite night.

Called the issues with Gillespie-Jones in the round 1 romp. Built like Jane, moves like a glacier. Can be very effective on her day but is currently moving like a 1999 John Longmire.

We weren't flash against the saints - lots of fumbling and getting done in marking contests and that momentum continued.

We might've basked a little in our media glory too, just like the men's team seem to do when they string a couple on end.

In this case our squad look legit top quality so it's about character now to get it back on track.

Do we have the depth to cover our defensive shortcomings? We replaced Wright with Nestor on the weekend and looked slow, we ended up with five players all of similar height (Gilroy (172) Grierson (174), Hardiman (175), Nestor (172) and Randall (173) and mobility (perhaps Gilroy is a little quicker). Duffin is a great reader of the play but she isn't the quickest player either. At the moment we have Bresnehan as our only defender for the smaller, faster forwards, perhaps it's time to look at someone like Bruton or Campbell to provide support in Wright's absence.
I assumed that's what Campbell's role would be when we traded for her. But Bruton won a B&F for us by playing on-ball (as did Garner) so she would be one of the last players I'd mess with.

And yet, with the score at 53-51, Bruton and Garner weren't in the middle for the centre bounce (instead we had Em.King, Kearney, Riddell and Gavalas plus Ashmore and Campbell on the wing), which wasn't atypical for the evening. There are a lot of options that we can try down back if we settle on a logical midfield mix that fully utilises our three best ball-winners.

Footyology review
MELBOURNE 9.6 (60) d NORTH MELBOURNE 8.3 (51)

Talk about your instant classics. This easily was one of the best matches in AFLW history and not only because it had one of the young competition’s highest aggregate scores. This was an exciting heavyweight match between challenger and favourite, with the challenger making a statement about its flag-readiness to the rest of the competition — but not before the favourite nearly pulled a victory out of the fire. The inside 50, contested possessions, and clearance counts were mostly even, and while free kicks didn’t decide the match, North conceded a fatal three in the last two minutes — one to the Dees’ Daisy Pearce during a last-roll-of-the-dice, forward 50 entry and another to her teammate, Shelly Scott, who then converted a set-shot at the final siren — that extinguished whatever hopes it had of a miraculous victory. The Dees trailed the Roos by four points after an arm-wrestle of a first quarter, but with ball-hawks Karen Paxman (25 possessions) Tyla Hanks (23 possessions), and Lily Mithen (21 possessions) setting the tone, Melbourne exploded in the second, equalling a league-record six-goal bonanza. Jacqui Parry kicked three majors in the term, helping the Dees build a formidable 27-point half-time lead. But in the third term, the Roos responded with four goals of their own. Ashleigh Riddell picked up eight of her 17 touches and Tasmanian Daria Bannister — whose AFLW career has been cruelly injury-prone — turned heads with two crumbing goals within 30 seconds, to close the deficit to a mere seven points. That disadvantage might’ve been only one point, but for some possible Paxman craftiness. After the umpire paid Paxman a free kick for an Emma Kearney high tackle, did Paxman then take just a bit of an extra backward step to make it appear that Kearney’s toss of the ball back to her would bounce short and look half-hearted, prompting a 50-metre penalty? Whatever the case, Paxman easily drilled the resultant set-shot. A thrilling passage of ball movement by the Roos late in the final term — from Kate Gillespie-Jones to Jasmine Garner (15 touches, 12 tackles), to Sophie Abbtangelo, culminating in an Isabella Eddey snap for goal — brought them to within a tantalizing two points, with just two minutes left. But the Roos conceding a free to the Dees’ Alyssa Bannan for a chop of the arms would be a precursor to their comeback falling just short.

Bruton had a pretty dirty night, especially in the first half. Garner wasn't doing much better in the middle than Kearney or Riddell either. We need to be able to bat deeper, to be able to put Mia and Gavalas even Campbell and Bannister through the middle at times and know we are not going to lose too much.

Oh we're calling what Paxman did craftiness now Footyology? Yea, sure.

She clearly wanted to get one back after she cost her team in the exact same way in the first quarter. Only difference was, the 50 metre penalty against her was clearly her error. It's certainly "crafty" to force the umpire to make a decision under pressure of "consistency."

There's something to be said for sensing the moment though. The game was well and truly up for grabs with 5 minutes to go and, straight after the goal that closed the gap to 2 points, we made some changes in the midfield and defence which diverted from what had actually got us back into the contest.

Melbourne's run in Q2 was mostly a result of basic positioning errors in the back half... I don't think a single structural change was made in that area of the ground while those 6 goals were piled on. So the tactical priorities seemed a little out of whack to me.

I must admit, its the one that shits me the most though. See it in the mens too that occasionally they'll call it 50 but other times they won't and just say "nah that was fine". And some player that momentarily lose all hand eye co-ordination as its comin to them.

Close your eyes, take a deep breath and imagine for a moment Lindsay Thomas did that and how the media would have reacted

I mean at least a couple of them would have been taken out through rage induced heart attacks, so not all bad.

I think Lynch may be a better option than Duffin, our lack of mobility in our defense is our achillies and I don't think Duffin is anymore mobile than Hardiman.

Duffin reads the play better than anyone, but it may not be what's required especially if teams have smaller forward set ups.

Ok, my first time trying this and I‘m staring at the spinning wheel of death beside “happening now” - just sit and wait?

Edit - after waiting half an hour I realised that the club had sent me an email (at 2.05) and the link there worked, in case anyone else tried going through the Ticketmaster binfire of a website and is also stuck.
