Hcd was bang on. Crocker’s focus on our game doesn’t pay enough respect to the opposition. Paxman was outstanding in round one then well held round 2, we needed to shut her down from the outset. We need to have a plan for players like Bri Davey, Kiara Bowers and Prespakis. There’s a lot of teams that are heavily reliant on one player and as such it’s an easy way to get an advantage.

Kate Hore has torn us apart previously, we didn’t seem to go in manning her up. To their credit I reckon Bresnehan went to her in the second half and shut her down.

The Demons girl playing CHB had a great game. We needed to lower the eyes and kick to the advantage of our girls. Saad looked bad playing from behind. I reckon if Duffin had been fit she could have played CHF where she might’ve read the flight of the ball better.

Emma Kearney is an absolute star. Her efforts from start to finish were amazing.

Aileen did a couple of good things. However, she was disappointingly out of the game for the most part. Not her best night - even though she’s still my favourite.

I thought Melbourne played good kick - mark footy. Never gave Aileen a chance to play intercept game in first two quarters. Still had 15 disposals in the end and her long kick relieved pressure.

I thought they should have thrown her into midfield in second quarter when we couldn’t win any contested footy

I must admit, I didn’t think she had 15 disposals. Maybe, I’m marking her too hard.

KGJ needs to hold a few marks to be anything other than a decoy. We have structured around her as our CHF and she draws the defenders but then our smalls need to be able to capitalise on that, which they could not do in the second quarter, letting the half-backs waltz the ball to the other end for a goal. Having said that our delivery was pretty poor. Either our forwards think our mids can kick longer or our mids think they can kick longer but the worst part of our play seemed to be the disconnect with the kicks going no-where near their targets. Our forwards should know how far our players can kick and set up accordingly.
ATM our best contested marks in the forward fifty are King and Bateman.

I saw some chat last night that this was the best quality game in AFLW so far. I haven’t seen enough to judge, but the way Melbourne played in the second quarter to attack and nullify a strong opposition was probably the best AFLW quarter I’ve seen.

Their effective passing game was more consistent than ours, their intercept defence and (legal) spoiling was more consistent than ours. North put some nice play together but across the game it felt like we were scrambling while they were cruising.

I so wish we had completed the comeback and I was filthy about it last night, but a lot of the things that were the difference were in our control.

Abba has a good conversion rate, I feel she gets a goal a game and positions herself well to set up others.
I feel like Abba's started the season very slowly. She's not a big disposal player at the best of times, but it doesn't feel she's clunking them or she's as much of a goal threat as she usually is. Don't know if the stats back that up though.

This. I reckon the Dees' 3rd goal (with only 2 points the difference at the time) was the one that really was the tale of the game. We turned it over at half-forward and then the Dees took about 6 uncontested marks when we really should have had time to get 1 on 1's further up the ground. It reminded me of that AFL game a decade or 2 back when (I think it was) * broke the all-time record for uncontested marks against us when we just wouldn't man up.

Round 1, 2014.

Putrid.

Wow the melbourne supporters are kinda d$cks. Saying we blamed the umps without saying anything nice about their performance and that the ladies are thugs, putting down the team and calling them norf. They really don't get the spirit of women's footy.

If the right player isn't swapped out for Duffin though, our problems in defence will just be exacerbated. Here's a theory I floated in this thread a month ago:
I personally don't think there's any opposition forward-line that warrants us playing both Randall and Hardiman, assuming a smooth return of Duffin.
Might I add, that sentence is six words too long. We simply get away with a slow backline against the teams who can't match us further up the park.

We fall behind on the scoreboard whenever we're only breaking even in I50s. Our solution to that, to date, has been to just dominate the I50s (note how we won the stat 28-20 in the final v Collingwood last year, still only beat them by 2 points).

The personnel in the squad is there to shore up our defence so they fare better under siege on the rare instances when required. But it means making some pretty tough selection calls now which couldn't have been made after Adelaide smacked us in 2019.

Wouldn’t worry about them. Their club was that inept that it needed the afl to step in to administer them.

I just find it hypocritical, they didnt give a crap about their women's team before this week, at all. I rarely encounter Melbourne supporters but they really are a poisonous and feral group. I needed a shower after reading how they see the world

Do we have the depth to cover our defensive shortcomings? We replaced Wright with Nestor on the weekend and looked slow, we ended up with five players all of similar height (Gilroy (172) Grierson (174), Hardiman (175), Nestor (172) and Randall (173) and mobility (perhaps Gilroy is a little quicker). Duffin is a great reader of the play but she isn't the quickest player either. At the moment we have Bresnehan as our only defender for the smaller, faster forwards, perhaps it's time to look at someone like Bruton or Campbell to provide support in Wright's absence.
