Positives
-great second half comeback bar umpiring we would have overrun them
-Ashmore and Kearney the only ones keeping us in it in the first half
-riddells 3rd quarter
- Grace Campbell tackle pressure
-Garner and bannister dangerous around goals
-gilroy giving us run out of defence and her long kicking to clear the zone

I don't give a stuff about the umps, that's never stopped the girls before, we lost the game in the second quarter , they knew it and will become better for the experience, may it be our only loss this season. Well done ladies on the second half

Melbourne whisked the ball around at will in the 2Q, was just infuriating to watch.

Just a ripping contest. Loved our fight in the second half but you don’t concede 6 goals in a quarter in AFLW and expect to win.

We should take a massive lesson from that game that sets us up for the rest of the season.

This. We shouldn’t look for excuses. At least, I sincerely hope and strongly suspect the team won’t. We just lost and it was all down to us in the end.

I'll give you credit, tZ. You were big on Grace Campbell and proved right tonight. She's a beauty.

The lesson to be learned is to have a game plan that can shut down the game when the opposition has a run on.
Melbourne had a great 2nd quarter. We regrouped after half time but the damage was done. The umpires weren't
good but we can't control that.

But has more physical attributes than Mase. I tend to see her as a Majak Daw of the women’s comp- she has all the physical attributes and then some.
I thought Saad was the Majak Daw of our women's team.

Clearly a disappointing result. Talent will only get a team so far, and against Melbourne's greater pressure and set-up in the first half - particularly, obviously, the second quarter - we simply weren't up to the challenge. Pleasing that we could respond with a fantastic third quarter (Bannister's zeal in the forward line is always impressive, great to see it pay dividends again tonight) but we shouldn't have let ourselves fall into that big a hole to begin with - must be quicker to arrest opposition momentum in future.

Plenty of talk here about the umpiring... yeah, it was poor, but in the same specific way it's poor in most AFLW games (namely, the way they're seriously hot on HTB most of the time until they suddenly aren't, along with the ludicrously cheap frees for marginal high contact or tackles that go anywhere near the back). Plus, it wasn't so one-sided that anyone should be citing it as a reason why we lost the game, no matter how ridiculous the 50m penalty to Paxman in the third term was, and despite a couple of other dubious calls.

The fact is that we made our own bad fortune tonight. When Melbourne were on top in the second term, we simply didn't have the answers - their spread, and the ease with which they moved it about as soon as we turned it over, meant all our players were trailing opponents for the entire quarter (except for the occasional good bit of clearance work from Kearney). And as I said on here during the game, I think this partly speaks to Crocker's stated intent to focus on our own game rather than the opponent's - it suggests we've gone too far in that direction and don't have the right sort of defensive mindset for dealing with opposition onslaughts.

My real long-term concern is, have we actually proven ourselves when it comes to beating quality opponents at all? Ultimately, with only 17 matches in our history(!), the sample size is rubbish, but what are the best sides we've beaten since we joined - maybe Melbourne in 2019, barely? Or an up-and-coming Collingwood in the 2020 SF, again just barely? Compared to losing twice to Melbourne since, and being easily accounted for by Adelaide and Fremantle in our first year... we're unproven, at best. This has to be the next challenge, to actualise our potential by actually properly accounting for a fellow 'contender' - because as fun as Round 1 was, trouncing cellar-dwellers isn't what's going to win us a flag.

The downside of this is that our best case scenario now is, probably, playing a GF in Perth or Adelaide, unfortunately. Very early to be making those calls, I know. However, it was a bad slip up, no doubt. Even though it was a great game and Melbourne were good.

7 possessions, 6 tackles an a goal. Her tackling was good which suggests she was second to the ball, but I thought she was a little quiet. Hopefully she will be better for the run.

Out smalls in the forward line were the biggest issue with the dees running the ball out to easily.
Campbell was serviceable

KGJ could be Nathan Grima’s twin

tZ cops a fair whack on this board (mainly coz of J-Mac) but I reckon he knows his footy and just has his biases like the rest of us. Good insights from tZ as usual tonight.

Agree. The jury is still out on his Wright call, though. Our defence appeared all at sea without her. Time will tell.

This. I reckon the Dees' 3rd goal (with only 2 points the difference at the time) was the one that really was the tale of the game. We turned it over at half-forward and then the Dees took about 6 uncontested marks when we really should have had time to get 1 on 1's further up the ground. It reminded me of that AFL game a decade or 2 back when (I think it was) * broke the all-time record for uncontested marks against us when we just wouldn't man up.

We were fast asleep all over the ground for that. Every single one of our players was at least two metres behind their opponent.
