The thread is silly. Let the guy prove himself before going off quarter cocked. But I am backing Balta to be a tremendous player, I remain very bullish about him. He has played 58 games, is a year off entering his prime, and appeals as a player who will derive great benefit from experiencing different situations. Not many AFL players pass every test they are put to with flying colours. And even less of them before they enter their natural prime from 23-24 years of age onwards.

In a team which has suffered from insifficient composure late in games recently, he probably showed a fraction too much composure there. He will be fine.

At which point all pressure is off and he can show incredible athleticism and kick goals infrequently until he's inevitably deployed back into defence to cover the losses of Tarrant and Grimes.

I have noticed a weird obsession about Jack Graham in alot of your posts. Well a handbagger fan having an obsession with Richmond isn't a suprise but I don't get the sarcasm in this one. Did someone say he is a star or something?

Richmond rate him a much better defender than forward. He is being sacrificed forward due to a lack of viable alternatives. So you won’t have to wait too long, he will be back there before you know it.

Ever since this thread was created, Balta has gone from a potentially very good defender to a spud forward who just keeps getting worse. This thread was a pisstake to begin with, but it's still impressive how much it's blown up in OP's face. May the laughs continue.

Didn't know that he was part of that deal. Graham is an average footballer at best if I'm being honest so his sarcasm is probably warranted.

Agreed, seems like the perfect full back whenever he's played there. Really strong, very quick for a big guy - I remember him towelling Tom Hawkins up a couple of years ago.

Very similar stylistically to Mal Michael.

Lacks the creativity and nous to be an elite key forward IMO.

He may or may not be capable of becoming a decent key forward. But the club had to try him there, it is such a crucial position for the medium and long term future and obviously quite a bit harder to fill than key defence posts. It is possible they don’t settle him in defence until Tarrant retires due to having other good options back there but not much forward past Lynch and Riewoldt. Even if Balta ends up permanently in defence his time spent forward will help him understand the game better. It is a rare situation where if Balta had less attributes he would probably be sitting in defence and be seen as doing better. You guys have seen it with Liam Jones. Flattered to deceive as a forward but was a lot better in defence.

Graham is a good player. He has his strengths and plays to them. He is not a star at AFL level, but well capable of being a 6-12 ranked player on an AFL list and you have to be a very good footballer to be at that level. He is never going to be an out and out top class mid he doesn’t have the power or explosion. But great gut runner, very good tackler, very good kick and decision maker, and always team first, and proven very useful in some big games. Any AFL team would happily slot Graham in as a high half forward.
