The plane scheduled for the flight went tech.

These things happen with aircraft - and I'd much rather they fix the plane on the ground than the plane break down mid-flight.

As has been posted earlier, pretty much everyone has been re-booked on other flights - albeit some via Canberra and Melbourne. So, at worst, most people are getting into Sydney a few hours later than expected.

Is the situation sucky - absolutely. Does it look like Qantas managed to get everyone on their way - yes.

Should there be a EU style compensation scheme for situations like this - absolutely.
Most are arriving at Sydney airport less than an hour before the game. Won't make the first bounce.

Absolutely they shouldn't fly planes that are unsafe. But they could've used a plane that was earmarked for a flight to, say, Melbourne, to go to Sydney, and cancelled the Melbourne flight which wasn't as time sensitive.

These days it does seem that if you want to guarantee you are somewhere on time, you have to fly the day before. It shouldn't be like that

Heard something I hadn't heard before on SEN. Chris Scott was shortlisted to coach Port after Williams left. He was beaten to the job by Matthew Primus. Scott then won the Geelong job. Imagine if Scott had been there for the last 13 years building an empire of victories. Makes me shudder to think.
Interesting but I just think Scott and Geelong both fell into an amazing window that Scott has absolutely smashed

I'm just not sure he lasts 4 years at Port

But interesting thought experiment none the less

That was Port at its lowest ebb on and off field.

He wouldn't have helped I agree.

Interesting....Think he'd have plenty of support, IMO it's being overdone, the instance at the Gabba was cringeworthy.

If you listen to Uncle Colin’s Welcome to Country at the MCG they are quite respectful, short and don’t force an agenda either.

Some of the others are very divisive - remember one last year in AFLW and it went on for 15 mins I reckon (think it was the Roos vs Crows Preliminary Final from memory).

Disgusting stuff from Qantas. They should be moving heaven and earth to get a charter flight for these supporters today and I mean that genuinely. People were fleeced by the airlines pricewise for tonights game and then the airline cancels it on them.

And I believe it wasn’t one of their scheduled services - it was put on specifically for the final. Well that worked well.

From memory, Scott was the #1 choice and everything had been agreed upon except Scott wanted to bring over a whole set of assistants and Port couldn't afford to pay out the existing ones, so it fell over and Primus got the job as 2nd preference

Take note Damien Barrett, this is a real sliding doors moment.

This is one thing that has surprised me. Why has the government through the ACCC not cracked down on price gauging through sporting events. Not everyone needing to go to Sydney would have been Port fans. The governments lack of inaction is really quite disgusting.

Any one with time to kill can watch the GSFL GF on at the moment.
Bryce Gibbs playing for Victor Harbor . John Butcher and Ben Kennedy playing for Pongy.

Gibbsy has been grazing in a good paddock.

Go Pongy.

Why is it 'price gouging' to increase your prices in the face of increased demand? Flights to watch the football aren't an essential service.

It is blatant price gauging.

Question is, how many more people flew to Sydney than normal. How much had the demand increased really for last minute tickets. From looking at it, Port merely made the cut and they jumped the price up immediately. Thats not waiting for demand. Thats pumping the price to rip off desperate people. There are not many empty flights out of Adelaide at all. Every flight I have been on has been full. So where is this increased demand we speak of. How many extra flights had the airlines put on.

Agreed. It’s simple supply and demand. Unless they’re putting on more flights (which comes at a cost), you have more people trying to book flights which maximum available remains constant.

Price gouging is charging $15 for a bottle of water at a festival when it’s 40 degrees when people have no choice.

Having prices rise because all these additional people want to book a limited supply of something at the last moment is called economics. Plan ahead by booking before the increase increases I price (obviously before results of the finals) or don’t go.

Reason - because if you book months in advance you can actually get a cheap flight. It is called supply and demand.

People on here obviously never fly often. It happens all the time, it is called loading. “X” number of seats at this price, “x” number of seats at a higher price and so on.

Unfortunately, it is one of the hazards around finals time.

Isn't that example also supply and demand? Heavy demand for the product?

It's all bullshit anyway. It's absolutely ripping people off. You aren't paying a fair price for the product provided. This supply/demand argument is just being pushed by companies to rip people off more.
It's like the old 'trickle down economics' model.

You obviously don’t get on planes much. The closer to the flight the more expensive it becomes. Quite simple.

I’m not a Qantas shareholder.

Finals time, same goes for Melbourne Spring carnival. You know it is going to happen every year - budget for the possibility or take alternatives, bus, car etc.

And I here people say, put on more flights? And how do you propose to staff them, you just can’t find pilots like uber drivers. There are rest requirements to ensure safety. FFS!

What, the water example?

No because usually there isn’t a supply restriction for water. They can always bring more water bottles. They can’t create more seats on a plane.

Airlines give the option to book cheap flights far out. Or they give you the option to book slightly more expensive flights that are refundable. But people want the $50 sale flights when the airline has no reason to discount their product else they’re turning people away.

Not exactly a star studded list . Rekon Scott has done well to finish 4th with that list .
