Daisy's off field influence on AFLW and being a major factor in it getting off the ground would be why any medal is named after her, and deservedly so IMO.

Nothing to do with Victoria whatsoever.
I don't know enough about it, but is it real?
OR, was she already playing footy in Victoria and the media decided they needed a 'face' of the game? Being an already accomplished player who was reasonably 'pretty' certainly helped the promotion of the game. Did she do it, or was she just in the right place at the right time?

Who do you think they SHOULD name the other medal after? They have 2 medals to name, and only one of them can be named after Phillips. Who would you name the other medal after? Who is the 2nd most worthy player in the AFLW's short history (given that Phillips is clearly #1)?
Marinoff..

Susan Alberti associated with the Bulldogs who championed AFLW for years and was a major part of the competition coming to fruition

Important by Rowie to comment

Sure he's getting called out but the Vic media needed a reminder that their darling Daisy ain't the best

They're angry that they've been forced into some self awareness

They are angry because the truth hurts..

They know Rowe is correct and it shatters their argument.. so they have desperately tried to discredit Rowe’s comments by claiming they are somehow mean and nasty..

Its a “change the narrative 101” tactic used by most that have weak arguments. Lets not talk about whether Rowie was right or not.. lets instead focus on making his comments out to be mean and nasty.

The competition is 6 years old, and it looks amateurish not to have proper names for their most important medals.
To be fair, it should be named the "Women's Brownlow Medal" until a suitable name is identified (similar to the "Reserves Magarey Medal"), and then they can rename both to better reflect the National Game.

Equivalence is the best form of recognition and respect, either they are serious about the female version, or it is just a bolt-on novelty.

This is probably a stupid idea that destroys all tradition, but I wonder if you could ever do something like honouring somebody for the next 10 years with the naming of a medal.

Can dig in to recent or past history, players, admin whatever. So using the Norm Smith, you honour Norm Smith on Brownlow night or another event, it's been a great 10 years and tonight we announce that the AFL Grand Final Best On Field award will honour Andrew McLeod for the period of the 2030s for his achievements in 1997-98.

The media would love to speculate on who gets the award named after them for the next period, get to honour someone who didn't happen to be there at the start of competition and it's not disrespectful to the person who has the award currently, because it's known that it's for a period of time.

Has anything like this been done before?

Can you imagine the arguments!!

I can see lots of people would object but I think that’s a great idea

IMO the B&F has the higher status, and that should be the one for Erin. And not until after she retires.

- Although any decision about naming such an award after a player (a league-wide award, anyway, not a club award) is going to be difficult.

Perhaps one of them could be the Gillon Medal. He oversaw the creation of the AFLW, after all :)

I don't watch enough AFLW to know - but that's the impression I get. Is Daisy really the second-best - consistently, over her career - AFLW player after Erin? Or just the one with the biggest media profile?
This is the best suggestion so far. Naming after a player is always going to produce arguments.
Let's call it the "Gilly", and name it after his retirement at the end of the year, in case he blots his copybook.
Considering he forced through the AFLW while producing anger from his bosses makes this clearly appropriate.

In many places, buildings are only named after those who are dead. That's probably going a little too far here.

Twilight game 23rd April on Saturday.

Wouldnt mind this time to see a Rioli or Kennedy Im not fussed to kick a goal after the siren to send them 0-6 potentially.
I'd like it to be kicked by one of West Coast's top-up players, although I assume they'll be past their COVID crisis by then and not be needing them anymore.

Maybe they could name it the Matthew Clarke medal, given that he has coached the Adelaide team to 2 of their 3 premierships? The Norm Smith medal is named after a coach...
It's an interesting one to think about. Say Phillips is named for one of the medals, which one? She is arguably the best on field grand final performer, but if we look at the men's league, you would argue the Brownlow is considered the higher tier.
Clarke has been the most successful coach, but I find it unlikely a male will be given the honour of a medal name for the woman's league, and I agree with that.

Maybe we need to wait a few more years for the BOG grand final to see if there is someone who steps up, but I think as it stands the Best and Fairest could right now be named the Phillips medal.

Wait 20 years to name any of the medals. See which people emerge as key figures during the early years and go from there
I think the point is that you acknowledge and recognise the people who have done the work in the first 20 years to get it to this point.

Women's footy has been around a long time, it didn't start with the AFLW.

I'm actually looking forward to when we catch up to the A-League who have A-League Mens and A-League Womens, not the W-League anymore.

Move to AFL mens and AFL womens, that's equality, not AFLW, unless we move to AFLM as well.

On reflection, I think time will look on Gil's time as AFL CEO rather kindly:

  • The way he handled Phil Walsh's passing from an AFL perspective was outstanding
  • AFLW being the success it is
  • Surviving the last two years

Sure, there's been some missteps along the way (AFLX), but overall I think he's been a success as CEO
Signing a 50 year GF contract with a cricket club undoes most of the good stuff for me

Actually thats a good point. He sabotage the fairness of the competition.

Whatever is said and done, the integrity of the Grand Final has still not happened.

Oh Heritier, the VFL media are to busy with camp issues and encouraging the booing of Tex. They don’t have time for your trivial matters!!!
This is an interesting one given all the hoopla regarding the booing of Goodes

Sure, there may have been a racist element in the Goodes case, but they are still encouraging bullying in the workplace. What if Tex develops a mental health issue?

Im not saying people can't boo him (I boo players sometimes), but encouraging it is different
