That's good to hear that a sport has solved their issue.

Interested to know who is paying the court supervisors to be there? Some stadium sports charge participants and parents/spectators an entry fee every single week (netball does, unsure on basketball).

Challenge for football is how to fix the situation. Umpires are inexperienced, don't control the game well enough which can lead to confusion or safety issues.

Ok.

What's the solution and how is it achieved? "Coaches need to be able to approach umpires during a game to complain" isn't a solution. "Need better umpires" isn't a solution unless there's plan for how this is achieved. "They should do more training" likewise.
Don't for a second think the court supervisors have solved anything.

The state of umpiring basketball in South Australia needs improvement and has for a while. Too many umpires do not understand basic travelling rules, particularly with pivoting and stepthrough moves. Foul calls are too inconsistent for each team with the two umpires at each end having different interpretations. Leading to player frustration.

A lot of court supervisors aren't visible enough around the courts too. Most of the time if there's a complaint they'll blindly back the umpire. It's good to back in staff members at times, but they won't want to hear the constructive side and help the umpire improve. Therefore, it just goes round and round in circles with the focus on player acceptance as opposed to constructive improvement of decisions. I've had some scenarios when the court supervisor hasn't understood basic FIBA rules.

My experiences are from a players perspective and I'm not sure what happens behind the scenes with court supervisors and feedback to umpires. I assume there's something in place.

I think BasketballSA have the right processes on paper. The green shirt system for ref training is good, in theory a court supervisor should work. Unfortunately the clientele in the supervisor roles, in my experiences, isn't at the level it needs to be.

. The whole thing was such a scam on so many levels.
Port will reflect on this period in history when they went to China as a success that was cruelly brought down due to Covid.

Its the same kind of bullshit they have claimed since they were established in 1996.

Are there "proper" umpires at any junior sporting event?

No

There are guys (or kids) that have done an online course, been given the clothing and own their own whistle.

The No 1 requirement is Are you prepared to do a job no one else wants to do for a handful of dollars? And would you like to give up some of your weekend?

Coaches: Why aren't they very good at it???:mad::mad:
For the same reason most of you aren't good coaches
Best umpire intro I had at a coin toss was along the lines of "if any of us were good at this, we wouldn't be here today. I won't take crap if I stuff up and I won't laugh at you when you do".

It was probably how immediately disarmed I was, but I still remember him as my best ammo umpire.

I agree, I said to my Port friend that's odd. My Port friend said he hasn't been that bad this year.
He's definitely not playing as well this year as last. They should have traded him last year. He will never play like that again.
They will probably get a second round pick for him, something they don’t have this year as they traded that for Sinn

I can't wait to be part of a packed Adelaide Oval, seeing Patrick Dangerfield look towards the umpire with a raised eye brow, cry "dissent" in unison, waiting for our deserved 50 metre penalty to track us from the back pocket to the wing, only to loudly boo the umpire as he cries "stand".

And you guys think there's something wrong with the game.

Bit like how the supporters who went there exclaim "it was a wonderful experience being able to sample the Chinese culture"

Narrator: They went for two days which included going to an AFL match and eating at McDonalds.

Alright, so I admit I watch tiktok before bedtime to relax and get to sleep.

Then I came across this video and just simply had to post it on here. Couldnt stop laughing, it got me pumped up to watch more videos. :$

While I hope they 0-6 come Saturday night, they may actually win a game this season.

Have to say, the AFL videos on TikTok are hilarious. I tell you what, Hawkins will never dive again.

That’s why staging doesn’t need to be actively penalised.

A call of “play on” and letting the player develop a reputation for staging in itself is enough of a deterrent.

We have umpires who don’t even know what constitutes “abuse,” don’t give them more power by asking them to pay frees against staging.
