I miss the days when Port were "selling out" stadiums in China

Was this a pre-cursor to Covid-19 crowd restrictions?

AFL On Notice Round 6: Don’t muzzle Tex Walker, cut the Brad Scott spin and ignore Tony Cochrane

Scott Gullan is back to turn the heat up on the AFL world – and this week Brad Scott, Tony Cochrane and Tex Walker’s critics are in his sights. See all the big names on notice.

In a new weekly column, eagle-eyed football journalist Scott Gullan sharpens the pencil and announces who is on notice for the coming round ...

LET TEX SPEAK

We are all crying out for footballers to tell the truth, to actually say how they feel rather than producing clichéd responses over and over again.

So when we actually strike gold and get an unfiltered answer, why do we then feel the urge to try and muzzle them.

The AFL was apparently not happy with Tex Walker’s response to Richmond veteran Trent Cotchin only copping a fine for kicking him.

They felt it was a sledge on the Match Review Officer and that a please explain could be in order.

We’re sure Michael Christian can handle himself and would probably like some honest feedback. (Just quietly we think Tex was 100 per cent on the money).

Port Adelaide don't need to go to Shanghai anymore to play in China.
Short flight to the Solomon Islands.
Do we blame Port no longer playing in China for why they have moved into the Solomon's...

The blight on junior sport are coaches who manipulate kids abilities and lack of umpire experience or if the club supplied the umpire to win, instead of actually teaching them to play the game successfully as they rise up the levels.
Seen many coaches in many sports at junior level (some not even in premiership grades) make the game about them and winning at all costs to make themselves look good.

The game is all about the kids FFS and you are meant to be teaching them how to play the game (amongst other things).

Are there "proper" umpires at any junior sporting event?

No

There are guys (or kids) that have done an online course, been given the clothing and own their own whistle.

The No 1 requirement is Are you prepared to do a job no one else wants to do for a handful of dollars? And would you like to give up some of your weekend?

Coaches: Why aren't they very good at it???:mad::mad:
For the same reason most of you aren't good coaches
I can say that basketball does, and they also have a court supervisor at each venue watching the games and the ref's.

Not sure that’s right. Junior footy umpires have coaching, and they train during the week.

Well, they did, at one point. Would be surprised if that’s changed.
Also depends on what level of juniors you're talking. For example SANFL u16 and u18 definitely have 'proper' umpires with umpire coaches watching each game. Not sure if they go to the level of reviewing tapes afterwards (we used to briefly when I was involved for my discipline).

SANFL Juniors (ie community club level) probably don't.

That's good to hear that a sport has solved their issue.

Interested to know who is paying the court supervisors to be there? Some stadium sports charge participants and parents/spectators an entry fee every single week (netball does, unsure on basketball).

Challenge for football is how to fix the situation. Umpires are inexperienced, don't control the game well enough which can lead to confusion or safety issues.

Ok.

What's the solution and how is it achieved? "Coaches need to be able to approach umpires during a game to complain" isn't a solution. "Need better umpires" isn't a solution unless there's plan for how this is achieved. "They should do more training" likewise.

Karl Amon dropped

Interesting

I agree, I said to my Port friend that's odd. My Port friend said he hasn't been that bad this year.
He's definitely not playing as well this year as last. They should have traded him last year. He will never play like that again.
There's a rumour that he wants to go to St Kilda. Free agent this year
