Exact timings, match-ups and venues will be officially announced at a later date, but AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said the weekend would likely involve six matches at Adelaide Oval; one each on the Thursday and Friday nights before double-headers on the Saturday and Sunday.

He said the remaining three games will be played at suburban grounds and "potentially a regional venue". The Barossa Valley has been canvassed as a possibility by the South Australian government.

So, looks like Freo will be adding the Barossa to the list of far flung venues that they've had to play at.

I really, really don't like the Magic Round concept for AFL. It really only works in the NRL because every game can be played at the same venue, allowing you to get full day passes and see multiple games in the same day without leaving and popping (essentially) next door to Caxton street to continue the evening (or start the day I guess). By splitting venues, especially venues over an hour away, for niche games just means fans of the smaller teams they send to those venues miss out on the rest of the games and subsequent atmosphere. If you're a travelling fan for an interstate team you may as well just go to a Melbourne game and stay for a few other games that weekend.

It also only works well in NRL because it's a passionate and centralised fan base and the bar is set relatively low for what's considered successful. The only part of Magic Round that the AFL will get right is mirroring the initial reason for the concept: To give another big market for the sport a pseudo-big event to distract them from never getting a Grand Final.

They really have become the joke of the AFL.

Good luck to them

4 people arrested and an AFL umpire under scrutiny for a betting scandal at this year’s Brownlow. Sounds like they are insinuating an umpire leaked votes for certain games.

I’m sure the AFL will be mortified as this seriously undermines the integrity of the game AFL sports betting.

It sounds like people won big on insider information and the sports betting companies are having a sook, legit - even if a single umpire told me all the votes they did on the games they did... it's still not enough information to know that the player will win (this would only be 10% percent of all games played).

Doubly so, it would require me to be moronic and believe and trust this one umpire to the point where I would bet money - so you'd think they know a sure thing before they put some coin down.

So all in all, for the AFL to take this seriously it must mean it's a bit more serious than one umpire - which is an extremely serious situation.

I believe the investigation isn't about the winner, it was spot betting who won the 3,2,1 votes for a single game of a single round.

If you have three players on the ground with 30 touches and three goals - it would make a lot of money for you to know what order they were going to finish in.

Not so much if there was: 9 goals from one player, 30 touches and 2 from a mid, 28 touches 1 goal and ten marks from a mid on the winning team. That one is probably already in order.

I'm not sure it's ever happened but if the player who won the BOG medal for a game didn't get the three votes, that would also be huge to bet on.

It was spot betting if you believe the media report, i.e. bets on votes from individual games, not the whole Brownlow
