a bit weird that you'd infer the AFL were happy to stitch him up and rob him of a Brownlow.
I don't see that as the inference at all. The point was that the suspension for the Lewis hit saved the AFL the embarrassment of Fyfe getting top voting in the Brownlow (as he would've had two more games to earn the extra vote/s needed to win) but being ineligible due to a controversial suspension (controversial because enforcing a new rule that lots of people were not happy about).

I always saw the let off for the trip the following year as redress for the previous year's suspension, given that enforcement of suspensions for accidental head knock became less and less consistent in the weeks following Fyfe's suspension.

Also a bit weird that you'd infer the AFL were happy to stitch him up and rob him of a Brownlow. It's the exact opposite. You should be thanking the AFL for not suspending him for tripping Koby Stevens and enabling him to take home the 2015 medal. He was found guilty and copped a fine, but remained eligible for the Brownlow. Tripping (by foot) had been an automatic 1 week suspension prior to that.

I think it's weird that you're inferring the AFL did him a favour with the tripping charge. The AFL changed the rule at the start of the year, and handed out fines for trips before Fyfe's slip. Naitanui for instance received a fine for a similar trip in round four that year, so don't act like the AFL did him a favour by following their own rules and being consistent.

Did stye? I spent a lot of time pouring over the laws of the game around that incident, and my read was that he was a goner. Not disputing you on this, just surprised to hear it.

Technically it was a change to carry over points that saved him, I think tripping was downgraded by the MRP in previous year.

"Fyfe would likely have received carryover points under the old Match Review Panel guidelines that would have resulted in a suspension and ruled him out of the Brownlow Medal for the second straight season, given his poor record.

But under revised guidelines that were introduced this season he should now only receive a $1000 fine"

I still blame COVID for losing Cerra , The Club was managing his homesickness very well . Until Border restrictions made it impossible.
I believe he would have stayed in a normal world .
Hence I have zero angst towards Adam and wish him the very best .
He is playing some great footy at the moment and would be a good chance to win Carltons B&F :'(

Have Cerra, probably don’t have Amiss.

Swings and roundabouts.

Looking at the parlous state of the Weavils and hearing all these people complain they are affecting the competition by giving unfair advantage to those who get ‘em twice, I looked at their early start.

Got within a kick in round 1, won round 2.

It irks me that Freo completely broke West Coast in round 3 and everyone else has been profiting since. We should be getting a percentage of the percentage.

The word you are looking for is “Commission”.

What is it now, 1-9 for teams playing after the bye against teams who played the week before? It was 9-5 in 2019.

I think it was Hodge or Brad Johnson on SEN made the point that yes the numbers are skewed in that direction but most of the games went the way everyone thought they would anyway. The only real outlier was Hawks beating Brisbane.

I genuinely loled at this
Yep! Absolutely nailed it

It's been an issue for years, way beyond just randomness. The AFL know it's an issue, hence they rotate around the teams bye schedule year on year, when they have their bye and mix up coming off the bye and playing someone who has within a season.

It got a bit skewed in the post-2016 years after fatigue was a much bigger factor with the interchange cap. It was much better having the bye in the first week, as even if you played a team with continuity, their added fatigue seemed to even it out significantly (maybe even skew it the other way). Then the rested teams who regained continuity, could pick off the teams coming off the bye should they played them after that.

Seems this year teams have adapted to any lingering fatigue issues there from the interchange cap. Of course that would be the year we got onto the first bye-week roster slot.
