The biggest problem with games at the MCG is V/Line can no longer go to Richmond station, so you have to change at Southern Cross to a Met which takes time. Last time I went to the G it took me 8 hours door to door and I didn't muck around, I went straight there and came straight back.
Thanks skyrail....

Of course Gil will say all GFC supporters can go and it's totally fair to play an MCG final against an MCG tenant when the government have ensured the easiest transport to the game is now heavily ******ed.
right.

but at 720 pm its at least 2 hrs travel in reality to get there.... people work, kids have school etc so the pool of GFC supporters that can actually get there is diminished - final or otherwise.

And the AFL dont GAF. its bullshit - and then the coverage starts of with there aren't many GFC supporters here for a final.
Well no ****ing shit dickheads - its the Decathlon to even get close.

GO Catters

That has a lot to do with it too, but it is skyrail. We (V/Line) can't turn around at Caulfield like we used to.
I don't know if there are plans to change that in the future, or if current works are stopping it more directly and will be finished soon, but right now we can't do it.
According to a staff member at vline that I spoke with last year - no plans to run football trains to the MCG. Maybe in 5/6 years time that will change, but looks unlikely

100% our first final will be Friday night at the G vs a tenant.
You can see it now.
There'll be 75k opposition supporters and 20k GFC supporters at OUR home game.

Sure has been a character.
Brilliant defender over the journey too. Well deserved milestone.

Awesome football family. Ray was a really good player, and Tony has a NS.
Loved watching both Heath and Rhys

Yup.
I work for V/Line too.
Excuse my ignorance cause I haven't lived in Geelong for ages, but what's the big deal about getting off at Spencer st and getting a train to Richmond or Jolimont?
Every east side train goes through Richmond.
Or even getting a train to Flinders, having a beer and walking down the river?
I'm not arguing or anything like that, I just dont know.

Also excuse more train ignorance but can't the new trains have an engine at each end?

From experience (espc on friday nights) coming up from Geelong doesn't often leave you a lot of time to grab dinner or a beer before the game. Easier to go straight to the game. Plenty of people from Geelong would also only use the train for the footy, one train is easier than two (elderly, kids etc)
Also excuse more train ignorance but can't the new trains have an engine at each end?
Most tracks are signalled for one direction only, so you can't drive the train back where it came from, you have to drive it somewhere it can be turned around and driven on the other track.

Double quote! WOOO!!

Ok, so it is easy in a sense to just change at Melb (from here will be MSC) to Richmond, but it does take time, you get off a MSC at a V/Line platform, change over to a met platform and jump on the next met that goes through Richmond, this might take you 25-35 minutes depending on stopping pattern vs a 7 minute run if our trains ran through there.
The biggest difference is coming home, normally you'd jump on a footy special at richmond that would run semi express to Geelong or wherever else you want to go, that'll take an hour to 70 minutes. The alternative now is you jump on a stupidly crowded met, when you are able, that goes to flinders and change there, or hope you get one to MSC, from there you need to change to a normal V/Line service which could be 10-30 minutes away, which stops all stations and would take 75-80 minutes to get home. For me, last time, this extra travel took an extra 2 hours.
Some say it's easier to walk to Flinders and catch a train there but I'm not sure that would be quicker.

Last point, it isn't so much engines at either end, the problem is 1, our trains have to stop somewhere and change directions, and 2, governments are cheap and made single directional tracks only, ergo you cannot go both directions. Think of it as a 1 way road, it is actually impossible to go the opposite way (the RRL, or "new" line from Geelong is the same, it's ridiculous), the system just does not allow a train to turn around.

Ahhh that makes sense. Cheers.

Getting to the game doesn't tend to be too hard - always plenty of options in terms of getting off at Southern Cross and then catching a train to Richmond, Jolimont or as suggested Flinders & having a drink (as we do with pre-game meet ups).

It's more so after the game which can be a bigger issues. I'd suggest that up to 75% of the MCG crowd go to Richmond post game for trains & makes it crazy busy for trying to access (unless you walk across the bridge & come on off Olympic Blvd), and that means any loop or Flinders bound trains are packed.

I try to go to Jolimont as there's less people heading back into Melbourne from that station meaning that I normal get on the first train departing that station (plus only one platform in each direction).

If lucky, your train will go to Southern Cross but normally it requires a change at Flinders St - so no direct football train means that the trip home can be a bit longer & a few changes of trains which is probably more frustrating for those with families (young) or maybe older fans who may struggle with extra walking. I find it slightly annoying but have decided it's a good excuse for extra exercise

Faark, I'm learning heaps.
Surely it couldn't be that hard for V/Line and PTV to organize a Richmond bound train within 10 mins of a Geelong train getting in and have someone on a speaker saying go to platform 12 footy campaigners.
Maybe cause it's usually cause I go to Flinders when getting a train, but I can usually get 1 to Richmond within 5mins.

Yeah true about Rich station. I've got kids and I won't take them to fri night MCG game cause the station is such a shitfight.
I actually don't feel that safe with them.
& the AFL are worried about kids hearing green maggot lol.
Maybe they should fix up the station.
& yeah it is too far for elderly little kids to walk back to flinders at night.

Gotten worse since they switched from going through Werribee to now going out the back through Tarneit and Deer Park etc. then swapping trains at SC. Absolute nightmare

Does it go through the new station being built at Rockbank or Caroline Springs?
Not yet - the line was originally meant to splinter off from just after Little River & go that way through to Melbourne.

Then one of the governments made an agreement for the RRL to have 4 additional stops on its way to Melbourne.

Add to that that when planning was taking place that Sunshine station said that the only way they'd permit Vline through the station was for them to also stop at the station.

So the current stops between Footscray & Little River: Sunshine, Deer Park, Tarneit & Wyndham Vale

It's become a longer journey with more stops then when the train use to run via Werribee

Oh fair enough. I work along section of line quite a lot but it must be the Ballarat line.
I was gonna say post when your coming through and I'll flash a moon or something.

Or how the Bombers game earlier in the season finished around 6 and it took until 9pm to get off the platform back home.

Where the first footy special from sC was 20 mins after the match but no loop train could get you to SC before it left, meaning logistically you could not get there in time
