9 touches, a goal and 1 clearance is hardly a mind-blowing game thus far. Reid will be a gun, but he has a long way to go.
That's a poor take, from watching the game. Reid has had far more involvement and impact on the game than those stats suggest. And looks to have a much greater feel for the game, where to be and how to impact, than Rayner.

We don't have to defend everyone of our players from every little criticism or comparison.

Watching Harley Reid in what his fourth game and he’s already doing things Rayner can’t / won’t in 120 odd games. Yes Cam has improved but it’s still an indictment on him I think that he still doesn’t have the tank or impact games that Reid is and will be doing in his first season.

We can all support the lions in our own way but I’m genuinely worried about how your perspective on the team impacts you. You’re watching a young draftee play a good game of footy to help his struggling team compete against a top 4 team and your first reaction is to get angry at Cam Rayner for not being Harley Reid.

It might well be true that Cam doesn’t end up as good as Sam Walsh, Matt Rowell or Harley Reid when all their careers are over but I just think that’s how footy is sometimes. We probably got the best player in the 2016 draft (for now at least, please sign Hugh) and we have the Ashcroft boys as father sons which every team would kill for.

I know the grand final loss broke all of our hearts and I would never assume to tell you how to process it, but I worry you are looking at everything this year through that lens and it is hurting your enjoyment of the footy. I do hope you’re ok mate as I think all of us here understand how you’re feeling.

Excuse me? It was absolutely warranted given the broken record that is McIvor found yet another opportunity to pot shot one of our players.

He had a good half - there's no denying that. Let's not pretend it was some unbelievable half better than anything Rayner has ever displayed.

But when you see Voss winning a Brownlow at 21 and captain at 22 doesn’t it make you think how disgraceful Rayner is?

It's disgraceful Rayner isn't as good as Voss.
It's disgraceful McCluggage isn't as good as Black.
It's disgraceful Hopwood isn't as a good as Brown.

Am I doing it right?

Like a lot of people aren’t critical of our players. Sure Rayner is a bug bear of mine, but calling for certain players to be dropped is pot shotting them. I haven’t ridden Hipwood like many do although yes I was one that thought he should have been dropped. Oscar too. Hell there is a bloody thread about Oscar’s issues where many vent about him. I even dared to comment during the past week that I thought Dunkley was underwhelming and yet I credit his performance yesterday.

So who else do I pot shot; Joe, Froggy, Lachie, Linc, Starc, Dev, JL, Cal, Fort, Jaxon, Zorko and I could go on. That’s right I did say over the pre season that I didn’t think Jimmy Madden was AFL standard. So what, is this forum only reserved for mindlessly back slapping players?

One exercise I play in my mind is how many players from our current team would get into the 3 peat team ?

I can find 6 or 7 who would contend for selection.

Now obviously that's my bias because they're bigger stronger and quicker now for the most part. And you can't compare eras , totally different parameters.

But I can still only find 6 or 7.

I forgot Cam was No 1 pick years ago and just treat him like any other player.

It wasn't his doing that he was taken No 1.
Ditto, where you are taken in the draft should have very little bearing on how we "judge" a player. Simon Black taken at pick 31, Adam Goodes pick 43, Dean Cox rookie draft pick 28, Tom Stewart pick 40, Nick Larkey pick 73, Jordan Dawson pick 56.

YEs, Yes.

Disgraceful that Rayner was taken at Pick 1.

What was he thinking?

In their career best form I would go with > Harris Andrews, Lachie Neale, Charlie Cameron, Hugh McCluggage, Dayne Zorko, Joe Daniher.

Also think that Lincoln McCarthy and Keidean Coleman would push for selection in that dream team.

I was about to check out who this 'Foss' was that was currently captaining an AFL team in his third year as a player ... then Nunez to the rescue it was a typo of Voss!

Of course being the youngest ever debutante (according to Wikipedia) for the club doesn't hurt with your experience.

Also of course, I judge all current players by the best ever in history types even when they were playing different roles but, as a general rule, I tend to give most players a pass for not being Voss, Black, Judd, Ablett etc.

Equally of course I am delighted when one of our current players are legitimately in that kind of a conversation (for longer than Brennan's one game) but not even the most optimistic write ups in his draft year was he expected to be a generational type player that would contend for a team of the century one day.

In the sense that he has done what we hired him to do (assist with cultural shift etc) he has been a raging success (so far) ... sadly his natural talent and his natural work ethic and competativeness have not come on as we would have preferred (and yes why would they when he is being rewarded consistently for doing exactly what he is doing now and has always done)

Same 6.

McCarthy is probably as good as McCrae tbh.

Coleman and Wilmot in time if they go on with it. Ashcroft too early to tell.

The one player I would love in our team now is a fit Clark Keating . He'd be killing it in this era.

That's we're I'm at . I think Fages has overrated him from the beginning which proved costly in the GF as to what his capacities were.

But certainly not given up hope of him becoming a valuable player as compared to a reasonable one. The clock is ticking. Maybe this is the year.

it is quite annoying when you open different threads on this forum and its the same usual suspects posting their same usual talking points.
That's what everyone talks about in life.

Their usual talking points.

And then pretend to know something about anything else that comes up if they can't get their preferred topics.

I think everyone's guilty of that if they were honest.

Not me.

I don't know much about anything

Your post deserves a like which I’ve duly provided.
