Simple solution for this is that the Highest placed team at the end of the regular season, who has had a priority pick before, hands over their first round pick to the bottom place side, who hasn't received one previously . Keep this in place until all clubs have had a priority pick
simple and fair

So consequences for those sides who have received a past priority pick, but at a time when they are strong. This can even out the inequities of the past

Im being a bit tongue in cheek, but can already hear the howling from all the hypocrites who's clubs have had assistance before, but don't seem to see the need for North to get one !

Priority picks are old history, an error in thinking by the AFL, something they do frequently.

In the sensible era there are only two cases. Brisbane got pick 19 after the go home five debacle. Gold Coast got a suite of assistance to address the inadequacies of the AFL original introduction and to stem the financial bleeding of the AFL. Both these clubs are operating in foreign code territory with it's inherent disadvantages and significant go home problem given such a large % of their lists are from interstate.

North is a far different case, it doesn't have those two major problems, it's finacially sound, it operates in AFL heartland and the vast majority of it's list are Victorian who can't play the homesick card. It's current problems are of it's own making, different to Brisbane and Gold Coast.

North may even have a better list than us and we aren't getting a PP but as a nice guy I'm conceding North pick 19, the same as what Brisbane received.

And if the bottom placed side has already had a PP in the past, what then?

They don't get one
Sides have won flags with priority picks, plus they get the ongoing benefits for years after receiving them. If you want to balance that out then its only fair that those sides who haven't got one in the past get one
Once its been evened out and all sides have had the benefit of one then you do away with the system

The Melb/Carlton/Hawthorn ones are from 15 years ago, when the AFL was much more keen on handing out priority picks.

Carlton recently spent more time down the bottom of the ladder that North have, I don't agree that North are in a worse spot

And you got a few priority picks for it.

All the years Carlton were down bottom, they won no less than 3 games and % was above 73 all years except 1.

North’s % right now is 51.7

It isn't hypocrytical to hold this view and support a team that has recieved one. I didn’t ask for the Hawks to get one, I had no say over it.

I think priority picks are garbage and even more so considering the AFL just gives them out on a vibe and doesn’t even have a set criteria in typical AFL fashion.

Fair enough. The point is that they did roll them out and your side amongst others benefited. I'm also sure you enjoyed the Hawks success which to some part was because of the picks
North for years has had to play sides that have got an advantage due to their priority picks. Once every side has had one, then i also think the system should go.
I was trying to point out a way that this could happen which was transparent, and not due to a "vibe" from the AFL, because I agree that there's been a bad smell round the past picks

its not going to happen of course, but hey this is a footy forum, its a bit of fun

The aints haven’t lifted the cup for as long as my mums been alive and shes in her 50s💀
so you would barely be old enough to remember North playing in a GF, gee it must be tremendous fun bragging about something you were scarcely aware of.....
Nobody chose to trade Tarrant. He wanted out.
You offered him an insulting deal, Richmond offered more, then you guys improved your offer. classic mismanagement, and if it was by design to jettison older players, your paying the price and shouldn't be rewarded for it

North Melbourne was initially only willing to offer Tarrant, 32, a one-year deal to play on at Arden Street.
But while that offer was subsequently increased to two years, Tarrant made the decision to chase a premiership at Richmond.
Tarrant, pick 15 in the 2007 national draft, has been a best and fairest winner across 14 seasons at North Melbourne.
He was restricted to only 10 games this year after undergoing kidney surgery.

1 year for a 32 year old isn’t exactly “insulting” considering the bloke barely played the year before.

I think its time that the AFL put in place some concrete rules regarding assistance to clubs because all they keep doing is rewarding poor management.

Just about every club in the comp has had a handout at some stage and its time for that lifeline to disappear. There will always be a couple of clubs down the bottom at some stage so there is nothing to be gained by continually propping the stragglers up.

Remove the priority pick for good, its a farce and an insult in the way it gets handed out.

Give all 10 clubs who do not play finals a second pick prior to the 8 teams who did play finals getting their first. This will force equalisation and/or quicker turnarounds for those with struggling lists.

Those clubs who get the two picks have the choice of going to the draft with them OR trading a pick to one of the finalists for a readymade player, once again, this pushes more of the equalisation action.

It gets sweeter and sweeter by the day, 17 clubs will fail this season as they do every single year.
But once the premiers are anointed and had their 15 minutes in the sun. The full force of the AFL off season and media swings into play.

Imagine being the team with picks 1 & 2 in the draft. What will they do with those picks? I'm thinking trade pick 1 for two top ten picks.
So we have say #2, #5 & #8.

^^^
See what I did there that is equivalent to three lean years all rolled into a shitty 12 month period.

Do we go tall or add further to the midfield which has be rightly our priority?

Good times aye.

He is traveling about as well as you.

So what "alot of our better players" did we trade away? Two of them? Three if you count Ben Brown who can barely get a kick let alone kick a goal right now.

List some more of our better players that we traded away to put us in this shitful rut.

Go on I dare you...

If the PP was abolished Judd, Shuey and (almost certainly) Darling would have ended up at the Eagles. It's the picks after (Sampi, Swift and Lycett) we would not have had, one of whom did play in a flag to be fair.

Banfield, I'm too young to remember the circumstances as to why we got pick #1. Probably negotiated as part of entering the league but others can correct me.

I'm not sure it will change loads for the Eagles. I'll reckon we'll be taking Hewett, whether that's at 3 or 4.*

*EDIT: Or Busslinger if we decide to take a punt on a KPP. If North get a second pick at the start of the draft I reckon they will use it on Sheezel (after Wardlaw, with Brisbane taking Ashcroft) and I don't think we will try to convince him to head west.
That's not how it works in this thread. People are saying we traded out all our best players to end up in this hole so obviously facts don't belong here but giving them a go for a minute - Shuey could have gone to Melbourne as they had two picks in a row interrupted by your PP and took another mid with the second pick.

Because your shitbag club don't deserve it and neither did my club either. Bailing out clubs who have made crap management decisions has to stop and that applies to all 18 clubs, not just yours or mine.

Well we could argue the merits of the "management" decisions by the 2 clubs when your one was salary cap rorting followed by years of poor management
whereas we could argue that North have made some poor recruiting decisions , partially because we've picked a bad time to be bottom of the table ,trying to draft players that basically have hardly played for 2 years due to covid. Both clubs have also been impacted by the lack of access to high draft picks due to GWS and Gold coast coming on board.

But i agree that they should get rid of the system, but only after we get what most other clubs have received

And? I think the system should be scrapped. Have thought that from the start.
It probably should but we missed on the first pick in the second round last year, when we were on the bottom of the ladder because of it so why the **** should it being scrapped start with us now?

Apart from SA sides and Geelong we're the only club to not get any draft assistance ever. Essendon doesn't count cos they got pick one as a result of having their squad banned for a year (altho they did the right thing by the comp with their round 1 selection.)

"Circling back" to this one... I've thought about it overnight and have decided that this really is the appropriate course of action.

I'd LOVE to see the AFL take over North Melbourne!
With Brad Scott and Laura Kane in there I'd say we're closer to taking over the AFL.

But how can you say with great conviction that you have enough talent but in the same breath say you're applying for a priority pick? Where's the professionalism in that?
I agree.

She should have said our list is complete shit and taken a dump on all of the players. That would have been professional leadership.

Tarrant wanted out after the hub. WE convinced him to stay till the end of the contract. He was never gonna sign another one.

Why does it disappear after nearly everyone else has access but before we do? Typical silvertail attitude there.

Youse got assistance we didn't and now you're calling for it to end.
