Couple of observations after the weekend round.

Whittlesea & Thomastown : If you're "resting" players to have
them right for finals, what's the point of finishing in the top 2
when you get the weeks rest anyway ?
If players are simply injured, probably not the best way to be
heading into a finals campaign.

From past experience, it's bloody hard to stay "up" all year.
Look at Lalor last year. Slow start and timed the run beautifully
heading into the finals.

Macleod was at full strength on Saturday and this, in my opinion,
is the only way to start a campaign.

Fitzroy - me hats off to youse blokes. Yep - that loss to Ress
has cost you dearly and you certainly would not have been
making up numbers had you made it.

I suspect that Macleod v Mernda will be at Cramer St
and Epping v Watsonia will be at Lalor

no excuses for thomastown on the weekend! played bad footy all day! disposal was terrible! macleod played really well! ran hard and had the better disposal.

what did you guys think of the umpiring?

It wasnt "resting" players but we had a few ( about 6 i think ) carrying niggles which will be 100% by the 1st final and they wanted to be up and firing for then.

Only time will tell if that's the right approach or it backfires?
Lets all get ready for a cracking finals series as we all know its a different ball game . :D

sharps,

You Have Asked All & Sundry About The Umpiring. What Is Your Opinion, Who Were The Umpires And What Happened.:thumbsu:

The Umpiring This Season Has Been An Absolute Disgrace And Something Needs To Be Done!!! Considerably Worse Than In Any Other Season I Have Played. Too Often They Have Had An Influence On The Final Result And Players Are Getting Extremely Frustrated On A Weekly Basis!

Being a past player of Parkside from the 70's now living in the country i went and had a look, standing their watching thinking to myself how frustrating it must be for Parkside player's with a umpire paying tiggy touch freekicks against them all day it got the better of me and yelled out at the umpire to give them a fair go,a chap standing close to me said your right mate, 1 umpire is killing Parkside and iam a Epping supporter. Iam not saying the result would have been any different Epping were the better side on the day.Any way thanks Parkside for a great day catching up with all the old players, and to who ever were involved in making the cd of the 75 years of Parkside i take my hat of to you simply magnificent THE PASSION HAS NOT DIED:thumbsu::thumbsu:
matchwinner, i said more or less the same thing in my quote and i've only seen 1 game.If this has been going on all year yes the umpiring issue's need to be addressed before the start of next season,or you will have the same problems again next season.Surly it's not good for the NFL when a person who has only watched 4 quarters of NLF football and can see the problem with the umpiring straight away.:thumbsu:

200 points does sound like alot. But it is only about 3 goals extra a game.

3 goals a game doesn't sound like much does it

mernda v parkside loss 10 pts
mernda v hurstbridge loss 2pts
mernda v epping won 2 points
mernda v fitzroy stars loss 12 points
mernda v whittlesea loss 1 point

all these games were decided by less than 3 goals

Sharps,

You have asked all & sundry about the umpiring. What is your opinion, who were the umpires and what happened.:thumbsu:

well to be honest im not sure of their names but one in particular was an absolute disgrace even though the other would be in the "very average" category. I dont know know if anyone else has had him but hes an old fella/idiot looks about 60 and doesnt run at all and walks around the field picking freekicks 50 metres away a 20 year old would struggle to see.

I have no issue with umpires missing some free kicks as YES we are all humans. But i do take issue with umpires paying crucial free kicks in front of goal as they consistently fail to be pay them all around the ground and seem to pick a favourite team for the day.

for gods sake let the boys play footy and dont get involved unless its a CLEAR freekick. Id say most of us would rather that then this current "russian roulette" type of garbage we have to deal with week in week out.

any one else have something to add?

fair to say that the umpiring wasnt the best and Macleod did seem to get a few tiggy touch frees awarded but in saying that it had no effect on the outcome and that guy wont be umpiring again this year.
although if the umps had been on there game you might have 2 guys up at the tribunal this week instead of 1, the guy who tried to run through Jezza after he was elbowed in the head should also be up but he took off and the ump didnt have a clue.:thumbsu:

macleod full strength ?
mahoney- their number one ruckman suppposedly played twos after injury
they would look for him to be playing
then there are others - hansen ( twos after injury) , wigmore, wendt, gunningham etc that would all love to play ones this week

fair assesment! like i said in the earlier thread macleod outplayed us and deserved the win.! It was more about the state of umpiring in general not really about that particular game.

yeh j bennet did get an elbow but as i saw it i don think it struck him in the head. yeh id say the other incident was more worthy of a red card but hey when you get 2 idiots and a whistle who knows whats going to happen. :D

good luck to all in finals series!

the umpiring at macleod/thomo was the worst for the year. tall bloke who is bald, colin i think, is a goose. he red carded our captain (capeci) for a legitimate hip and shoulder from 40 mts away when he had no clear view of the contest.

even the radio commentators said that he got it completely wrong as their was another altercation shortly after.

very poor communication by this umpire and his mate was no better.

its a common theme but the standard has dropped remarkably.

We should be fourth? in front of Eppen:p

If that's the way you want to look at it, then Lower could have finished top 2. Lost 9 games for the year, but 4 of those were under 2 goals and another 4 under 4 goals. The reality is, when the game was up for grabs we weren't quite good enough to get across the line!

South Morang vote count on sunday delivered a huge shock. Mark Jerram from Whittlesea managed to get votes in the morang vs whittlesea game. Apparently his old man was given a vote card and once again couldn't help himself. Well done Trev!

The only players you mention who could get into our best team
are Wendt & Hansen. Wendt has had work commitments and Hansen still coming back from an ankle injury.

Mahoney - tested the hammy in the 2nd's and it hasn't come up.
Wigmore - Had knee reco last week

Based on the available fit players, yep, I would say that we were
at full strength ie, no player was put in 'cotton wool' leading
into the campaign.

It would be a hard team to crack into now based on the form shown
the last few weeks.

Went to see what I thought would be an eventful game between Macleod and Thomastown last week. How wrong I turned out to be.
Macleod jumped out of the blocks early and set up a 3 goal lead at quarter time that could well have been more. By half time this lead was stretched out to nearly 6 goals and you could sense that it was almost game over. A 5 goal to 2 3rd quarter put paid to any thoughts of a Thomastown comeback and the last quarter became party time for the home side.
Better players for Macleod were Andy Bennett (clearly BOG), Kane Shaw and Richard Andrew.
For Thomastown, their better players were Collins, Courtseyo and Macdoodle.
Whilst I am not one to make excuses, the umpiring was absolutely shocking and I let rip at half time as they were making their way off the ground...couldn't help myself as they made some shocking decisions.
CLEOD: Good to catch up again, though you seemed more distracted by the goings on in the marquee than the actual game itself. Hope you enjoyed the 6 cans we had on the game. Well done, until we meet in the finals perhaps??

i would like to add that murray could also come into our best side aswell. gunningham could aswell but i dont think his heart is there. he was not at training tonight.

The NFL, what.
So you bust your arse for 18 games then you get a week off, then if you happen to lose, you are dissadvantaged by only a 6 or 7 day break, and the team that wins the 3 vs 4 game gets either a 7 or 8 game day break.
Thoughts?
Seems strange doesn't it? Opposite of last year, plus we have to work monday:confused::mad::(

just stupid. top 2 teams deserve the advantage. why have they changed it now?

Want a tissue mase!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your good enough, you wont need to worry about things like that. Or are the eagles already looking for excuses!!!!!!!!

GHOST: I detected a number of "excuses" being thrown around on Saturday. Whilst I agree that the umpiring was bad, you can't hang your hat on that as an excuse.
Mind you, I will admit that we were close to full strength. But we feel we are hitting our straps at the right time and an interesting finals series awaits.
The marquee was certainly a big distraction and I must say that Hally deserves a BOG for sinking drinks like they were going out of fashion....well and truly gone before half time of the 2's in my opinion.
The biggest disappointment of the day was the non event between Puffa and Dean Sinclair. There they were in front of the club rooms after the game and Dean didn't want to race Puffa, yet he Puffa was in his footy gear raring to go....poor form Sinclair!!
Thanks again for the 6 cans Ghost, looking forward to going again in the finals!!
