For a finals game, so what. During the seaon they don't rate, get minimal press, minimal TV news exposure and no one talks about them.

It happens in every city. When I've read the Age they focus on the matches in Melbourne and have very little on matches outside Victoria.
I've bought the Age in Sydney hoping for some better AFL coverage and had next to nothing about the Swans.

And whats wrong with that?

Do you think Americans care about Gridiron not having an international competition?
Do you think the Irish care about Gaelic/Hurling not having an international competition?
and so on.....

I am not the one trying to say that it was.

So why is the NFL trying to expand the game in Europe???? This is from a game played in a country with nearly 300m people vs 20m here.

I thought the AFL and the Gaelic Football where playing international rules???? In any case, with only 4m people, Ireland is irrelevant on the worlds sporting stage.

no difference from NZ

All of which explains why they draw as many as 2 of your NRL so called powerhouses combined.

Minimal exposure and still by a mile Sydneys biggest club. Imagine the storm drawing more than Collingwood and Richmond - the 2 best supported clubs in Melbourne this year - combined. It would be an absurd impossibility but Swans do the same thing regularly.

Frankly the NRL, drawing 15,000,comparison is with A League, drawing 12,000, not with the nations only truly major league drawing more than both combined. End of story. End of argument.

it is a shame that AFL is not on TV to the same extent as it was back in the 80s and 90s on ESPN

It's not on TV at all unless you get a satellite subscription. I've got cable TV and really don't want to mess around with getting a dish and all that just to watch the footy at midnight (they have live games each week).

It's frustrating but ESPN isn't interested in acquiring the rights, from what I've read, and the Fox Soccer Channel (which showed the Grand Final last year) is getting rid of everything bar soccer. Bastards!

LMFAO. No one gives a toss about AFL outside of Australia.
Compelling arguement there Ronin:D
I didn't say they gave a toss, i said that they love to talk about it as it is a very memorable and exciting sport that was once on ESPN.

Put AFL and NRL side by side and poll 100 people who have never seen either and ask which is better, and i guarentee:

AFL>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>NRL:thumbsu:

WTF? It was nearly double the average rating,
100k vs 170k -- right?

over triple the peak rating,
naturally, as there was an exciting and close finish..

and over an hour and a half longer period of time.
are you arguing 1 average viewer for AFL is worth more than 1 average viewer for NRL?

You're seriously losing it ld.
lost it along time ago..

AFL > NRL.

How much evidence do people need? It is an non argument. Australian football is a more popular sport nationwide than Rugby League. Period.
Nice argument n all but the fact is RL doesnt compete against AFL nationwide!

I have lived and worked in Sydney for the last 8 years. In that time I've probably worked in 3 different companies in the city.
In all that time I've only known two people interested in RL enough to talk about it and go to games. One inside work, one outside work.

Maybe I'm in the wrong demographic, but Soccer (ex poms), Rugby (kiwis and a couple of Aussies) and AFL (general low level chatter) seem to be the sports that people talk about around the water cooler.

I can only assume way out west is where the "heartland" is, because it sure isnt in the city or 10km radius.

If I were an advertiser I'd say yes. An AFL match is longer in terms of game time, telecast time and therefore potentially more advertising time.

I suggest you get yourself out of your ivory tower and mingle with the people for a change..

I'm sure I could go to Melbourne and associate with diehard soccer fans and start posts about not discussing AFL all that much at work.

No one watches AFL in Sydney if the Swans are not playing.

According to today's Australian, the Ade v Freo game drew a very respectable 170k average rating in Sydney. Not bad for an Sat afternoon game.

The WCE v Syd coverage was over 4 hours including an extended preview and half an hour "Fifth Quarter" review of the weekend's games - the average viewership during the 3 hour period around the game (the normal telecast time) would have been substantially higher than 172k.

I mix with all sorts. You dont choose who you work with, or who your neighbours are.

Maybe you should ask your mum if she can take you to Sydney to see what its really like.

Certainly blows out of the water any perception from those outside Sydney, that sydney is NRL focussed
You're applying AFL heartland mentality of weak minimal or nonexistent competition from other codes to Sydney. You're mistaken. Sydney is the financial heart and soul of Australia where all codes need a presence to prosper and grow their income, thus all codes give it their best shot.

I lot of people on here, and from AFL states, kind of assume that NRL in Sydney has the same penetration as AFL in AFL states. Its no where near as popular. The News Ltd media may pump it up, but in reality interest is in the same ratio as crowds, as you'd expect.
Not that NRL crowds are bad, NRL is still the number 1 crowd pulling code in Sydney, simply by number of games played each week. Hense NRL is still the number one code, but not in the sense that AFL is the number one code elsewhere.

They have to talk it up at every opportunity because they are the only ones stupid enough to pay $500 mil for the rights! Makes me sick when Carl Stevonovic and the preying mantis Jessica Rowe talk up NRL on the channel 9 morning show! It is so contrived and scripted and you can see the Jessica is not exactly comfortable doing it!

Just doesn't compete . So what was with all the arguments then ?
You said it . RL just doesn't compete .

Maybe, or maybe it just means there are wild fluctuations, ie higher peaks and lower troughs.

No , it's just like the man said .

Pretty simple and undeniable logic there .

Where have you worked at? The Swans club or something?
I work in North Sydney and at my work alone, we have an NRL tipping competition, not any other sport tipping competition... This friday about 5 of us from work will be going to the S.F.S. There is a Bulldogs flag in the office (Not even mine :D), i have merchandise around my table and the boss has Tigers gear! It's the only sport that is talked about in the office except for Soccer and the odd international RU Game.
I have seen quiet a few people going to games straight from work on friday afternoons around North Sydney and the City... You sure your not talking about Melbourne mate? Or are you on drugs?
