Ok guys i know the tiges are going to win it but does everyone have to be that depressed that nobody posts on this forum anymore??
It is hard not to be depressed about the state of the competition. Nobody goes to games any more and nobody cares. Albury have stuffed the comp and the league have let it happen without dong anything about it.

Seems most are over discussing albury. Maybe time to discuss other topics rather then their dominance at senior level. Comp seems to be fairly tight from 2-9. Predications on who'll fill spots 2-5 ? starting to sneak up on June 30 any player movements out or in ?

I reckon Albury and Kyabram in the GV would be better off playing a best of 5 series (state of origiin style: yes I know they do it over 3 games and I am taking the piss) and call the winner Country Champions!

The rest of the sides in both leagues could compete to have an interesting and relatively unpredictable finals series.

What do you suggest should happen? People were banging on about a points system for a couple of years. The league knew AFL Vic we're going to put one in place so waited until that happened, but it's here now. We all know it's going to take a few years to have an impact. But how do you just punish a team for having success? Plenty of complaints but offers of a viable solution seem few and far between.

All is a waste of time and effort. It is only 12 months since I heard various "esteemed" commentators at a national level ( and in the years prior ) banging on about changing the rules to negate the freo and previous swans negative defensive tactics etc. leave it alone.footy that is. It's lasted over 150 yrs so far. The afl hangers on have become like the public servants (heigh level that is). They have to keep reinventing problems and solutions to justify their jobs.and every week they "interpret" things differently! Wtf.
Albury did a wonderful job recruiting their top 10 . Other than the o boys I gather all live local and hopefully will live in the area for life. Albury continue to bring through new talent and recruit selectively . But their prime movers are getting older .
The problem appears to be the "apparent" $ bar has been set high by various clubs over the past 15 yrs. that includes some clubs now struggling.
Leave it alone( your mum probably advised that). Don't fiddle with a wonderful game. Just please show some common sense!

Well the cap in interchange has made the game better at afl level this year, and it has negated freo's style of play hence their position on the ladder.

The problem is not the points system, it is it's implementation within the state that will ruin country footy. Why do albury have the same points allocated as the wangs, corowa and myrtleford? The bendigo league has had a fair crack at evening the leagues out in bendigo and surrounds. If division 1 metro teams all had 30 points and major regional centres with a large uni (bendigo, geelong and albury wodonga have 36 it would be a good start, as strathfieldsaye, golden square and Sandhurst all have good sides with 36 points. Towns like wang, shepparton, echuca, kyneton, swan hill, Horsham, warrnambool should have between 36-40 points and the smaller towns should have between 40-50 points depending on the size and geographical location. That way we would not have players choosing to go to teams where they know they will wins flags. Wouldn't it be better to have seen melington join the league and play for wang or corowa and challenge himself, like what brett goodies has done at Sebastopol? It would also push more ex afl and metro players into the country leagues and provide stronger comps without clubs having to pay overs.
You say albury have done a wonderful job keeping their recruits, but where have all their juniors gone, who have come through the ranks? It is good to see cross come back and play for his home club, but how many locals are in alburys side?
And silver tongue why just albury and kyabram for the country championship? I'm sure the geelong premiers would be just as equipped to play off, country footy is just not played in the north-east of the state.
But maybe you are right on the prize, we should just leave alone, and see how long clubs can last in the current environment, ala survival of the fittest

Updated ladder prediction at the half way mark of the season.
Lavington are the hardest to assess. Last few weeks they have lost to Myrtleford and Wodonga, only beat Wang by a goal and were down at half time against Rovers. All those sides are currently out of the 5.

Yarrawonga
Lavington
Raiders
Myrtleford
Wangaratta
Nth Albury
Wang Rovers
Wodonga
Corowa

Albury

Myrtleford
North Albury
Wodonga Raiders
Wodonga Bulldogs

I was big on Wang at the start of the year but Newton missing has hurt big time. They would need to win 7 out of 9 on the run home to get to 4th. It would be good for the comp if they could pull it off.

Newton out for another three weeks, re injured his calf getting off his motorbike at work on Friday. Magpies have won games without him, but a 50+ goal a season forward would have had them right in the mix you would think.

Agree, it would be great for the league to see them pull it off, tough month ahead.

Wodonga Raiders
North Albury

Myrtleford

Corowa Rutherglen

Albury won't lose a game and will beat Lavington in the grand final.

Can't help but agree but just wanted to see other peoples thoughts about wang. Joe Richards work rate was impressive on the weekend would be a dream to see him crumbing Newton by the end of the year hopefully!
All of Wangaratta would love to see that!
Not once have i seen a more down to earth kid, than Joey, he has the drive to get better, he really wants it.

Newton seeing a specialist in Melbourne today.

I heard that newton was at the gym on his own thursday night while the rest of the team were completing their main session for the week, i think there might be a bit more to this story

Hey guys. After an opinion from you all as most much watch a lot of O&M... would Ablury be the best country team in Aus? Thanks in advance

They would have to be. 15 goals better than the next best in the O&M at least.
AFL experience - O'Hailpins x 2, Polo, Hyde, Cross, Mellington, Schultz.
State League - S Daly, Mackie, O'Hara, Maher.

Would have to go close. Would take a mighty good team to beat them. With the Ovens & Murray having the standing of one of the strongest country leagues in Australia and with the ease of which they blow teams of the park week in week out I would say they are. I have no doubt they would be competitive against some state league sides.

How does everyone see this weekends games?
I see Raiders vs Wang being the close one, hard to see Raiders going down at home as they are starting to hit top gear.
Albury to mess up Lavi.
Myrt should be too good for Bulldogs, Doggys should have afew handy types back this week however.
A depleted Yarra should still do it comfortably against the Rovers
And poor old Corowa look likely to cop another hiding at the hands of North.

Cant wait for next years salary cap, this week we have the potential for three 60+ results and that no good for anyone. Bring on the equalization measures..

What are people's thoughts on the proposed salary cap for next season which is expected to be between 160-180k? The clubs are very keen for a cap because wages are getting out of control and clubs cannot continue to pay. Apparently a cap at this level is lower than the amount most clubs are currently paying.

Importantly a significantly lower cap will be introduced in the lower leagues which will help clubs retain fringe and up and coming players with many of these players currently being poached by lower leagues.

Also payments made as part of another job that also involves players playing for a specific club as a condition of that job are set to be included in the cap but this could be very difficult to police.

Nth Albury have only kicked 3 goals in their last 5 quarters of football as Wodonga held them goalless in the last quarter then Raiders held them to 3 for the match. I think this is Corowas big chance. Good luck Roos.
