I wonder if there's any chance of talking Stevie Johnson to come over for a stint of ass coaching. Currently coaching for a second successive premiership with Yarrawonga, 10 years since their last one.

Joel Corey might be able to start the ball rolling.

Wouldn't say no. I don't mind Simpson though

Don’t mind it. Why’s he not in the AFL system currently is my only question.

I thought Simpson was being considered more for the type of role Bob Murphy filled. Simpson towards the end there became quite an advocate for player support when it came to dealing with social media and the like.

I really doubt he would move into an assistant coaching role.

I think Covid cutbacks would be at least some of the reason. Coaching his own team is good grounding too, even if in a rural league. Sometimes could even pay as much if not more as an AFL assistant coach role.

Alllllll I'm gonna say about that is - user name checks out.

John Clarke's "the front fell off" skit was relevant again this week in the Titan underwater submersible investigation. RIP.

The Footy Rhino today. "Smart recruiting, top coach create highway to finals zone"

"Chris Scott is the best coach in the AFL right now. The team he took over from Bomber Thompson in 2011 was loaded - he won a flag in his first season - but it's what he's done in the back half of his run that's more impressive."
...

"At some point Geelong figured out the best way to won flags isn't to build a super team, but to build a super club. Be ruthless in pursuit of talent - but also in development of that talent."
...

"The list build is Picasso-level stuff. When you're making so many prelims, you don't get high picks. You need to be thrifty. And the Cats are thriftier than Macklemore. ... Against Port two weeks ago, they had one player they drafted inside the top 20 - Max Holmes at pick 20. Ollie Dempsey just won the AFL Rising Star Award - he was a rookie draft selection. Brad Close, Zach Guthrie, Tom Atkins, Jack Henry - all rookie pick ups too. Tom Stewart now a five-time All-Australian was a pick 40. Gryan Miers, pick 57.
...

"You can whinge about recruiting of big stars - Jeremy Cameron and Patrick Dangerfield ... Tom Hawkins, Gary Ablet Jr and Matthew Scarlett father-son picks ... lottery winning kind of stuff. Of course that helps but it's only part of the puzzle. The truth is they are where they are because they get all of this stuff right. The small parts, the hard parts, the easy parts and the lucky parts. Be bored, but also be impressed."

Wish we had their development setup. I reckon someone like Freddy would be a top 20 AFL player with the Geelong set up and development.

Re: Simpson - pretty sure he's said he wants 2025 off so anything with him will happen from 2026 if at all.

How much time do people need off? I know it's a stressful job but if he starts at Fremantle early November that's a 4 month break. A lot of people retire at 67 having never had 4 months off.
