Oppo Camp Oliver Henry (Traded to Geelong 2022)

I have no sympathy for Henry and this is why.

If he came out last year through his management and made the following clear:
  • I have nothing against collingwood, the players or the coach.
  • I’m struggling and want to head home to Geelong and live out a childhood dream to play with my brother

Everyone would’ve been upset but understood, instead him and his manager came out with the following:
  • the money was not good enough
  • worried about his spot because of mcstay coming in (at this time we had not even signed mcstay)
  • not happy being out of the best 22 throughout 2022

Bad advice from his management and his manager is to blame for the hostilities directed towards Ollie, of which I par took in.

Good riddance, you’re either with us or against us under fly, a great indicator of the ruthless culture fly has created.

Agree his Mangment did a Terrible Job on his Reason to Leave Collingwood

To be a superstar at 188cm, you need to have elite pace, endurance, and be proficient on both sides of the body.
He is lacking in all those areas.

Nice to see you've moved on from "he won't get a senior game in Geelong's forward line, he will be playing VFL" to he lacks the traits to be a superstar. You'll get there eventually.

He laid a good tackle on Sidebottom, and had a good mark down back in the last quarter I think it was.

Still, the hyperbole over Henry is incredible.

Would have been under enormous pressure so to amass 15 disposals (@93 DE%), 6 marks, 2 contested, a couple of goals, 5 score involvements, a couple of clearances, and a couple of tackles was a bloody good effort for a medium forward.

I don’t really give him much credit for either of his goals. One he shouldn’t have gotten and the other was the marking version of a “joe the goose” where there were three players free on a turnover and he was the lucky one. If it was 14 disposals and 0 goals, no-one would be saying a thing.

I get that everyone loves Ollie Henry, I just don’t see it personally. I think he becomes a handy third tall. Time will tell.

All goals are worth 6 points. We don't discount those kicked by our players just because they come from Joe the goose opportunities or questionable free kicks.

Doesn’t Eddie Betts live in Melb and leave his family each time to go to Geelong training?

Why couldn’t Ollie buy a house next to mum / brother and come to Melb to train / play?
Listen to some good podcast on the drive / improve his knowledge of world events
Grab a latte after training and enjoy the drive home. Have dinner at mum’s / bro’s - then off out to catch up with Geelong mates - best of both worlds

I suppose he wasn't getting paid enough to afford a house, so he needed some extra coin down at the Cattery to live next door to mum.

They count on the scoreboard no matter how you kick them BUT when it comes to evaluating a player's performance how got them is very significant. I boy I taught years ago kicked three goals in his first game for the Bulldogs but I told my son I didn't think he was going to make it. All three goals fell in his lap. A couple of chest marks in space where he was in the right place at the right time and a soft free. He had no dash or point of difference yet seeing 3 goals on debut would have most thinking he was going to around for a long time. He was eventually delisted after playing 20 or so games.

Henry can play and will be a good player but he did receive a gift over the top on the rebound and an incredibly soft free and 50 m penalty. It could so easily have been 3 on debut and I would not have been at all impressed if I hadn't seen what he can do last year.

I just checked his stats. It was 4 goals on debut!

I’m not a scoreboard, I can value goals however I want.

Arguably he shouldn't have got the first one himself either. Extremely nit-picky, but he probably could have quickly got the ball to one of his teammates in the goal square to make a certainty of it rather than going back for the set shot himself.

You don't discount the team effort. But getting on the end of a joe the goose isn't the equivalent of a pack mark goal in terms of individual contribution to the scoreboard.

Nice to see that you’re stalking my every post on Ollie to assuage your insecurity in the debate.

Let’s see what happens when there’s no room for him to pinch hit in the backline, after it returns to full strength.
And if there’s no room for Ratagulea in the backline, then he’s more of a weapon forward than Ollie.
So again there’s no room for Ollie.

And what happens when Duncan and Menagola are available?

Maybe you can tell us who Ollie replaces out of Hawkins, Rohan, Cameron, Stengle, Myers, Close in the fwd line.

So your idea Ollie is a permanent best
22 is very very far from certain.

If talking about this year….it’s certainly next.

He’s a gun player. We didn’t want him to go for no reason.
2 years at the pies will tell you that.
Shame his mental side isn’t as strong one in that he couldn’t wish Howe well…that says a lot,

If you are talking about who I think you are, it would be remiss to not add that he also had 26 possessions, polled a brownlow vote and has had the clear #1 debut game since 2010 according to afl ratings…. Also that he is probably the only player in the afl era to have had two senior coaches without afl experience…

In the NFL they have an advanced stat called “yards created”, which takes into account tackles broken, defenders evaded, yards after contact etc. I don’t think Henry created much of anything in his two goals.

After his goals, didn’t he create the umpire shuffle back to the centre square. What’s that, about 80 meters each time. Let’s not also neglect the Pies supporter angst. How do you measure that?

If you're saying he's playing VFL for a year then I'd say you're right, but I think that's a minimum, And makes his claim of moving to Geel for guaranteed senior games in 2023 a joke.

Hawkins is the only imminent retiree in the fwd line.
Ollie hasn't got the size to replace him. and is slow with a limited tank, so he's not well suited to other positions. Ratagulea is the obvious first option fwd if Hawkins retires, and if that fails they'll try to recruit a 195cm plus fwd.

Ollie's marking is elite but is it enough for a best 22 spot ? - I have my doubts.

These are both excellent points, and he also created about 1,000 memes by getting run down by Moore in the goalsquare.

Such a better stat compared to metres gained

He refuses to get involved at the contest I don’t get why they play him in the midfield so much
His squibbing of contests in the middle is astounding. Not surprising that he does it, but more that someone who was as tough as Scott keeps persisting with him up field
