Sounds like it was the perfect amount of contact if we were able to bring him home.
It worked. My point isn't that the club is wrong, but it was way less contact than I thought there would be.
I guess there is a point of wearing out your welcome which the club has to navigate, but I thought they would spend a heap of time and effort on them.

So you’re basing it all off one players experience and one who actually got poached back?
No, I'm saying that it is way less than I thought there would be. I had an expectation that the club was always in their ear, always telling them they really want them at the club, from when they were a Jr and up.
Now, what's the right amount of contact, I'm not sure. I'm not a list manager or a player getting annoyed by Hamish ringing him every week.

Remember when Geelong were after Danger, the work they put into him was massive. When the Crows played Geelong at home, both Dangers parents were in the Geelong corporate box. His family members were given jobs with Frank Costas company.
I assumed that was what we would be doing.

Hamish doesn’t do any of that work

Reidy is in constant contact with all the player managers , player managers and list managers are constantly having meetings re players on the list and their contracts and then they discuss players from other clubs that may be clients of the manager

Reidy would ask how so and so from SA is going and are they happy etc all the time

It’s not a matter of ringing the player , that doesn’t happen until the end when they find out they might be keen on a move and having re signed at current club

There would be nothing more annoying than someone like will hayward or Lachie Neale who are happy where they are getting phone calls from Reidy

They wouldn’t answer after the first time

It’s not how things are done

Managers are for that so that player can concentrate on his job

Ah, you are one of those supporters.
Not at all, but weve heard in recent years that weve been staying in contact with players since their draft years. Luko said it, Dawson said it, Rankine too. One would assume weve done the same with Sam Draper for better or worse.

Im just not in the business of making up stories with obvious holes.

Ok but you’re basing it off 1 player that you spoke to, as I said.
And that one player ended up coming back because we kept in contact (obviously enough for him to want to come back)

Yeah, a very important player, and one you would have thought would have got the maximum amount of effort from the club.

I remember rendell saying he didn't even bother contacting players as no player wanted to come back, and it's an area we've traditionally been poor in, so might be more to what cleric said even if it's probably more of a statement than a source as is the case with bigfooty

When was Rendell ever the list manager?

That was never his role.

We are one of the current best club in comp at attracting players back in trades

So it’s outdated

And the method is outdated , it’s a list manager and player manager relationship that does the leg work , then at the end the player becomes involved

It’s the best way to limit distraction for the player so they can concentrate on their job

If he's going to go, Port will want an answer next year so they can get full value
They may want one but not get one. And can’t demand one. If I was Butters I have no incentive to help the club out at my own expense.

Clearly in FA best interest - not his existing clubs - to wait to be a RFA so another club can pay a MASSIVE salary (overs) to pick up a top 10 player in the league for NOTHING trade wise, and hopefully stop Power matching. I reckon 1.4-1.5m x 6/7 years will be around the mark

Port have a history of forcing players out for value, no reason why it wont happen again (if he DOES want to go)

Have they ever had a top 10 player in the league as a FA though with 10 Victorian clubs salivating to get him

We both know the answer is no and this time it’s different

They forced out Houston this year, might not be a top 10 but you might have heard of him.

And you'd have to be pretty dumb as a big Vic club to pass up the opportunity to grab a Zak Butters if he wants out a year earlier.

The offers will come, you can put your parents house on it.

So if you were a VIC club would you prefer A or B?

A - trade for Butters end of 2025, minimum 2 first rounders required including a top 7-10 pick. 1.25m / year contract

B - get Butters as a RFA. 1.4m / year contract. No trade collateral needed

I know which I would prefer as a VIC club and it ain’t A

What if you are in your flag window - ie Collingwood say jump right back up the ladder this year coming and think they are 1 mid short to pinch another flag....in that case, pulling the trigger is the right thing to do.

Depends how badly you want to win mate..... if im a Vic club and I just miss a flag this year, im not waiting another year.

It was outdated when rendell was saying it but he still said those things 😃 the point was we have a long history of being very poor at player attraction and retention so it's not beyond the realm of possibilities

All good. Let’s agree to disagree, clearly there’s good arguments for either side.

Just trying to genuinely remember when the last MAJOR pre-agent deals were done? How good the player was and what the acquiring team gave up? Any idea as my mind is a little blank over the last 5 years re this
