Aph and ODN
Did you put a sign in our front yard saying 'opinions from all oppo clubs welcome here. Please enter.' ?

It's not a Carlton posters only thread.

All welcome unless they are trolling, then bye bye.

Now back in your stable horsey. :p

I've been looking and can't find anything so does anyone know who is to be a part of our interview and appointment process?
Would I be wrong if I were to say that Diesel is now part of this?
Also, one question I would like them to ask potential coach in one way or another: in what way do you see yourself in contributing to CFC winning it's next Premiership?

You can have Chris Scott
Ahh yes the irrational fan is alive and well.
Chris Scott’s game plan doesn’t stand up in finals, except for in all those finals that they’ve won including a run to the grand final last year but somehow losing never has anything to do with players missing set shots at goal from 40metres directly in front or dropping easy marks that result in opposition goals...so let’s sack Chris Scott and get Clarkson.
It would almost be funny except had Port lost many Port fans would have been saying the same thing despite having consecutive top 2 finishes.
Then there’s my personal favourite in living in Perth of West Coast Eagles wanting sack Simmo because they missed the finals for the first time in years.
No doubt if Melbourne lose tonight they’ll be Dees fans calling for Goody to be replaced by Clarko too.
Please come see me complaining about your football club after it’s spent 8 weeks out of a possible 194 week in the top 8 since 2012.

Just patrolling the fences ma'am.

Who the hell has Foxtel these days. Premium dollars for endless reruns and commercials and packages you don’t want. Kayo,is ideal.
By the time you pay premium for high download capacity it really isn't.

The right coach may take us a step forwards and then a step backwards initially but in the long run we will get to where we want to be.

The reason for this is the new coach effect. Players are often motivated and driven to impress by a new coach. We have seen this with every coach we have sacked, early days are good then things diminish.

The right coach is going to upset and get offside with some players. This is a given if they are a good coach. This is because we are coming off a period with the wrong coach and the players are in a comfort zone and are used to things they are about to have shaken up. It's like taking away a babies toys, they cry. We saw this with Malthouse. Players wont like having their control, their power and their say taken away and being put back in their place which has to happen. They wont like being criticised for stuff they haven't been previously as they new coach is going to challenge these blokes. Some will straighten up and fly right. Others will want out and what usually happens is ironically they end up at a club where the coach brings everything they thought they were running away from and they end up straightening up and playing decent football because of this.

Regardless of the quality and fitness of the list and who the coach is, they will not have success unless fully backed in by the leadership group. IMO our current leadership group might be the thing that puts off potential coaching candidates as IMO leadership is badly broken at Carlton and a good coach knows they need this behind them to succeed. Our leaders are going to have to be put back in their place and I can see them not liking that however they must back the coach.

What's a leaders role? Well it's not to call the shots and have the same level of authority as the coach. The leaders role is to back the coach in 100% regardless of their opinions, their role is not to be liked or be friends of the playing group but to be respected. Their role is to enforce the team rules, coach's wishes and the game plan and to enforce the way we want to play and train. That means risking getting off side with players, being vocal, giving direction and not backing off in any way when it comes to dishing out praise and punishment. IMO something that hasn't happened at Carlton since Kernahan and possible Bradley was captain.

Our leadership group need to do some leadership training in regards to football leadership. Get them to speak about the fundamentals of leadership with guys like Luke Hodge and Nick Maxwell for a start. Big strides need to be made in this area.

Our board need to back the coach. If the coach has a direction they want to go or they ask for something then they get it and go with it. How many rumours did we hard about Malthouse going to the board with requests and getting shut down? How long have we been underequipped and lacked quality in our football department? Let the football people run the football and the corporates run the rest. The board need to listen to the coach and the footy department people and they need to deliver for them.

I would not be surprised if there is a line drawn down the middle of our playing list and on one side we have those who have bought in and on the other side we have ones who need to be traded or delisted at some stage.

In the past when stuff like this has happened we blamed the coach. We were wrong to do that. We need to get everything else right and give the coach the best chance for success, we need to get back to being the best in the business in all areas we need to be prepared for what may come with our new coach.

Fix the quality of the staff in the football department.

Fix the relationship with the board, keep staff members in their place and make sure the board understand they are there to support the footy people and not to tell them what they should be doing but to listen and support them.

Fix the leadership issues.

The rest will follow.

Does Daisy have any coaching experience? Did a quick google but didn’t find anything?

Possibly not but I wouldn't be making her a line coach or anything. Start at the bottom - VFL and development and work your way up. Plenty of "the boys" plucked straight out of retirement get this opportunity. Of course, she may not actually be interested in going that route.

I find it amazing how solely focused the media is at picking carlton apart. Im a collingwood supporter and here we are instability right through the club, and coaches saying no to phone calls cause of it and yet you guys seem to be getting the bashing. I just hope that both our clubs can turn it arround cause footy is alot more fun when both carlton and collingwood are strong.

I would love to see Eddie at the club next year in a development/coaching role. I am not sure he sees himself involved at a club though, his comments around his last game suggested he was looking at more of a whole AFL/community role rather than at a club.

I thought that was a major part of the reason he returned to us was the coaching aspect at the club post his playing days.

Selfishly, would be a little disappointed in both Brad Lloyd and indeed Eddie himself if that’s not happening now?

That said, appreciate Eddie’s role in the wider AFL community is perhaps more important going forward.

If we get Lyon I hope we push really hard for Buckley as assistant. I rate Buckley and being only just out of the game he is ideal pared with a coach who has had a few years off.

can’t understand people advocating for Bucks as an assistant. I love Bucks but seriously why would he even contemplate taking an assistant’s role!? Way too belittling given his experience and what he has achieved as coach thus far.

He can sit back, relax, do the obligatory season or two in the media, earn a sh*tload, boost his profile and then have the choice of whatever senior coaching roles present over the next few seasons. He has age on his side and the respect of the AFL fraternity.

If Sayers can convince Bucks to work under Lyon we have a genius on our hands as President but in reality its too far fetched.

Testify!

At Carlton we love to name names and look for *someone* to make us better. A coach - any coach - is not going to make our club better on their own. Just like our lousy form this year was not DT’s failure alone.

There‘s a lot of change needed - some from new people into the club but plenty from those who are already there. I remain sadly pessimistic about our collective appetite to change, learn, look inward and improve.

We want someone to do it for us/to us.

Even as a supporter base I feel we need to change a bit - our expectations, patience and desperate devotion to big names and favourite sons may need some adjustment. It feeds the environment in which the club has made many terrible decisions over the past two decades.

100% … great post!

Would have preferred Clarkson but the pro's of getting Lyon:

  • Friends with SOS, so would know the list well and would know what SOS was trying to set up.
  • Hopefully discipline and selection on merit
  • Hopefully will not play injured players
  • A game plan that the playing group can get on board with and put everyone on the same page
  • No distraction of playing older players for milestones, I'm not sure whether this was Teague or the club, but it has to stop.
Couldn't agree more.
