think the problem the Blues are in is that they have finally realized they need more pace through the midfield.

The sheer one paced nature of their midfield game makes me think that unless the two fwds go ballistic, they just won't find enough easy goals to threaten the top teams each year.

I think they know they have hit the ceiling with the current group and are hoping to load up on midfield pace via the draft.
There really are no other avenues to fix this problem quickly.

As much as Houston would be an awesome acquisition for them, from the outside, it looks like they are grappling between these two objectives.

as Sco said....who wins this argument at the Blues will 100% decide where Houston lands.

PS. if he "absolutely wants to get to Carlton".....then just name the club and narrow the field to 2 (Carlton or Port). I think Port need multiple clubs in the hunt to maximize who they want to bring in and i think Houston is doing the right thing by Port and staying silent to help them.

Sorry to intrude but Houstons preference would be to continue to play for Port unfortunately we are not based in Melbourne!! and for family reasons he needs to get back to Melbourne so he will be happy to play for either Carlton or Collingwood. Yes he has a relationship with vossy but whichever of the 2 clubs comes up with the best deal for port will get his services. Don't listen to Edmund.
You'll forget about Houston once Richards plays for you. He's the player with the most upside of anyone in this god forsaken trade period. I want him to stay, he's ready to explode

it does look like a concerted effort from a number of camps [both clubland and media] to ramp up the bidding war ..... who takes the bait?

What’s our age profile look like after pendles and sides retire?
Surely it changes a fair bit talking 70 years of age out of equation

Pendles, Howe, Sidebottom, WHE, Cox, Mihocek, Elliott, Crisp, Mitchell.

Then your next group a few years later will be 31 to 33.

Cameron, Moore, Degoey, Maynard.

We have arguably the worst collection of sub 21yo talent in the land.

We can all agree that Houston is a tremendous player who will make either of Collingwood or Carlton a much better side . If we don't get him , we should still look to get a draft hand of 13,23 and 29 and something else. We either use those picks to target another player that hasn't been mentioned or we go to the draft and run riot.

Winning a flag is hard. Ask Port Adelaide. I think recruiting for the future is equally as big a risk as recruiting for now. No guarantees either way. With McStay and Mihocek hopefully getting an extended run of games together next year I can see the merit in having a crack for the now.

There is definitely merit in having a crack now.
But the messaging that the draft is a useless crap shoot and we should look to trade out every draft (which sone are indicating on here), is sure fire way to mediocrity and sustained run at the bottom when it's all done.

Will take longer to build it up again and I hope for our sake the all in every year pays off with at least one more flag before it happens.

If that's the thinking, I think they've got it wrong. Pace-wise - Cripps, Walsh, Cerra vs Neale, Ashcroft, Dunkley vs what we won with in 2023.

It's the outside and transition where the blues suck because they don't have back half kickers or dashers and their flankers are plodders.

Good thing they don't give premierships to the team with the best sub 21yo talent.

Well, if it's true that Houston wants to go to Carlscum, then Carlscum will satisfy the requirements for him to get to Port. I'm a bit deflated because Houston would have looked good in the black and white.

Don’t overreact to Edmund. The jungle drums are beating and it’s for Houston to Pieland.

They have Williams and Saad

Dunno mate. It was posted on here earlier this week. Port wanted to deal with us and were upset with Carlton’s offer. Perhaps I dreamt it up. If someone has a link.
I don't have twitter

You didn't dream it

It was being reported in the meeja that Port were basically insulted by Carlton's offer.

If we get pick 13 out of Gold Coast then I just don't see how Houston gets to Carlton unless two things happen:

  • Carlton is willing to part with 12 and a future first
  • On the condition of above, Houston actually demands/nominates Carlton

Unless both of the above happen, I'm not sure how he can possibly end up at Carlton given Port, Collingwood and Gold Coast all have players each other wants.

Port wants Lukosius and Richards, Gold Coast wants Noble, Collingwood wants Houston. All 3 clubs are likely to get those players they want alongside reasonable picks.

So unless Houston flat out refuses to go anywhere but Carlton I just don't see how he would get to Carlton. Like, even with my above scenarios of Carlton caving on the first rounders and Houston wanting to get there, why would Port want 12 so much more than 13 when getting 13 also means they get Lukosius and Richards with no resistance?

Having a look at 3 three premiership sides and breaking into categories how the got to the team

Trade/Free Agent - Cats (7), Us (9), Lions (7)
FS/Academy - Cats (1), Us (3), Lions (3) (Didn't include J Daicos or Andrews as no bids ever came)
Top 20 - Cats (2), Us (3), Lions (7)
Other - Cats (13), Us (8), Lions (6)

Lions obviously hit the draft harder but 4 of those top 20 picks came from two consecutive drafts and only Rayner and McCluggage the real top end.

The list builds over time - we have brought in Perryman, McStay, Hill, Lipinski, Schultz, Cameron, and hopefully Houston
add to Daicos x 2, Maynard, De Goey, Moore, Beau, Quaynor. Thats 14 that should be around for at least the next 4 years at least.

Get a at least 1 -2 of our kids to become solid AFL players, if not above average.

Bring in more Free Agent and Trades - then you only need to get 4-5 solid AFL players every 3 drafts - and the list naturally regenerates - and back in development into to turn a few into A graders.

Plus with how good the kids come into the system these days there would be some top 50-100 players in 2028/2029 that aren't even in the system yet, who is to say they wont be on the Pies list.

Can you do a break down on teams who have won 3 now...

Cats, Hawks, Rich.

He'll even teams to go back 2 back GFs win and loss.
05/06 WC/Syd, 2010/11 Pies , 23/24 Lions.

I hope we don't give Carlton posters the satisfaction of seeing us having a meltdown in the event we do miss out on Houston. If they do get Houston, its because they managed to outbid us and we will just have settle it on the field next year.

Houston wants to get back to Victoria because of his girlfriend.

Yes Carlton are his no1 choice, relationship with Voss and JSos.

However, if Carlton can’t get a deal done - he will happily go to the Pies.

This isn't new news (I'm not saying you're suggesting it is)

This is what has been reported from day one.

But remember, Sam Edmund is a Carlton supporter. He's going to do all in his limited influence in the media to try and push for the Blues to get Houston or to make Collingwood's job harder.

If Houston really wanted to go to Carlton, he'd have publicly nominated Carlton like literally every other player this trade period has nominated where they want to go.

The truth is probably that if given the choice Houston would probably pick Carlton, but he'd be happy to go anywhere that isn't North and whomever remains that provides Port with the best deal.
The fact that Houston was originally going to Melbourne tells you that he'll go where the deal can get done.
Carlton's messaging is that they won't part with their 2024 1st round pick.
Unless they do, they won't get Houston.
If they do change, they'll look like they've caved in - either way they'll look stupid.
