Tanner Bruhn and Max Holmes are pretty good. Jye Clarke looks decent.

I think one thing Geelong seems to do pretty well (at least how it looks from the outside looking in) is keep their younger players coming through content to bide their time in the VFL until they're truly ready?

Again, maybe it's a surface thing, but with us, it feels like our young players are impatient and looking to leave if they're not getting games. I never seem to see articles about Geelong kids looking at other offers yet you seem to see it with others sides and in particular...us

It could also just be a "Collingwood thing" too because the media knows Collingwood generates clicks, but I'm just saying that for me it feels like we have more issues keeping the kids content with biding their time until they're truly ready.
I spent pay full attention to Geelong’s list management so I have 2 questions.

How many Geelong kids stay on the list for 3+ years barely playing a game until they become regulars?

How many of them that stay knock back offers from other clubs?

Each to their own, but at the moment Dean and HH don’t project to be AFL quality.. and unfortunately Macrae hasn’t shown much at the level to suggest otherwise either.

I’m obviously not in the most group in regard to the ‘will make it’ category on Eyre or Ryan either.

I'm not sure how anyone would be in the ‘will make it’ group for either Demattia or Allan either. Demattia is a pick 25 who is yet to play adult footy. They're both good athletes who might get their games together to make it, but counting them as cetain success stories at this stage is serious shark jumping.

You are probably right. Given Allan’s unique qualities, I’m hoping more than confident, that he makes it. Although ideally you’d want him further progressed than he is.

As for Demattia he’s a complete unknown.

To me Geelong's greatest strength in recruiting seems to be their ability to use the rookie list to acquire solid, AFL-standard players, as well as identify mature-aged players.

Some examples: Jack Henry, Tom Atkins, Brad Close, Mark Blicavs, Zach Guthrie, Oliver Dempsey

There are also other players who Geelong have drafted that have been mature-aged recruits, such as Tom Stewart and Shaun Mannagh, together with Oisin Mullin and Mark O'Connor from Ireland.
When Hawkins and Jezza hang them up and they're both close that's the end of the cat empire.

Shannon Neale pick 33 Geelong (2020 draft) could be anything & looks really promising IMO

21 yo, 203 cms, 101 kg

key forward / ruck

played 5 games for Geelong in last 2-years

super athletic, moves like a gazelle ..strong athletics background

Hiney selected Caleb Poulter at # 30 and Liam McMahon #31, the latter as our fledging tall in that draft year. The following talls, still on an AFL list, were picked further back in that same draft year and, at least 3 have a promising trajectory.

#33 Shannon Neale (Gee 5 games to-date)
#39 Josh Eyre (Ess 0 games; now SSP for PIes)
#40 Samson Ryan (Rich 15 games)
#48 Henry Smith (Bris: 0 games)
#49 Ollie Lord (PtA 13 games; excellent in a finals game last year)

Didn’t they have several 1st rounders from Kelly trade - then used for Jezza?
Hopefully they won’t have the same currency for Cadman.
Geelong got an incredibly good haul for Kelly - pick 14 and a future first (no. 18 in 2020) plus picks 24 and 33. In return, they lost Kelly, pick 37 and a 2020 third round pick.

None who not played say 20-30 AFL Games are Certain to make it at AFL Level

Yeah, but as Kingy was talking about with Whately today Geelong has been in the enviable position of having two set and forget gun key forwards for a while.

One they got through luck (Hawkins), but the other (Cameron) they were willing to pay top dollar for knowing elite key forwards are rare as hens teeth. They just were willing to pay the price knowing the importance of the position.

Personally I reckon if Cadman becomes an elite key forward and subsequently available at 2026, they’d drop a first and future first (pick dependant) on him without even a second thought.

Based on your own criteria of age, here's our group, Lipinski, JDaicos, Murphy, IQ, Hill, Beau, Dean, Macrae, HH, Reef, ND, and then we have those most agree will make it, Alan, Eyre, Ryan, Tew, Demattia.
Not sure I agree Geel is well ahead
Have made it: Lipinski, J. Daicos, Quaynor, Hill, Beau, N. Daicos

Too early but building: Harrison, McInnes, Macrae, Sullivan*, Bytel*

Yet to debut but promising: Allan, Steene

Yet to debut and too early: Jiath, DeMattia, Eyre

Iffy: Ryan, Dean

One foot out the door: Carmichael

Out the door (likely); Begg

Medical: Murphy, Kreuger

Also OOC: Markov and Sidebottom.

Age Player - Replacement

36 Pendles - Irreplaceable
33 Sidey - Harrison
33 Howe - Jiath
33 Cox - Steene
31 Elliott - McInnes
31 Mihocek - Hope for Condon?
31 Mitchell - Macrea/Allan/Sullivan?

There are no overnight fixes but if we could fill some of the above and pick up a couple of quality Free Agents there's a chance at a rebuild on the run.
The bookends are a real problem though, there's nothing developing up forward and if we lose Murphy we'll need another key back. Another top flight mid would be nice too.
Allan is more like Sidey on the wing, Harrison is that Patrick Dangerfield type who can also play as a small forward.

Mihocek's replacement will come from potentially Steene or someone else. Condon could still make the NBA and if we're seriously hedging our future on a basketball player, it's risk to say the least. Missed out over the past few years with players like Logan Morris. Lemmey, Keeler, etc haven't set the world on fire.

Jhye Clark looks horrendous to be fair
Ground level ball handling terrible and a sub par kick. The midfield version of Luke Godden

We have 6 current established best 22 players from your list and they are very good. ND, JD, Hill and IQ the A graders and potential A graders. Beau and Lippa great back up. Murph would be there but not likely to play on a long time.

Of the others Dean, Macrae, Reef, HH, Ryan, Eyre, Allan, Tew and Demattia none are best 22 currently. Which of those will make it? Depends what you define. Who will be 100 game players? 2 would be a pass and 3 a good result on my reckoning.

On work rate alone, HH.

If I had to guess the two now, Macrae and Reef.

He been Very Promising in the VFL so far

Reef I think is a chance. Fin is battling, probably unlikely. HH a chance but needs to step up a bit this year. Dean maybe. Ryan, Tew and Harry a hope but unknown. Would love to get 4 100 game players but thats asking a lot

Personally I doubt it. They are very good at attracting talent.

Jeszza will likely retire just in time for the country boy Cadman coming home.
A lot will depend on how these young mids develop. Their defence is set for a while. And like you I think they'll add a forward from somewhere.

Allan is more like Sidey on the wing,
I’m puzzled by the continual references I see to Allan being a wing. Whenever ive seen him play wing he struggles, disappears, can’t find the footy. OTOH when he plays in the guts he can look great. For me his strengths are what he can do in congestion. His handball feeds under pressure can be very good, and he has that rare ability to be able to burst out of a pack

Shannon Neale, not as good as Hawkins or Cameron and never will be. They can't replace them and that's why the empire is over.

The comparison I was told was Patrick Cripps.
