Reckon Matthaes Phillipou should be our no:1 midfield target.
He’s a good kid, professional sort, stays well away from trouble and drugs (doesn’t go so far as drink). Maybe a bit eager and excitable but would rather be dealing with that than an idiot who’ll be on the back page of the HUN for all the wrong reasons.

Talent-wise, I agree. South Australia will come knocking which is annoying.

28 years old at the start of next year.

Which is too old IMO. We really need to shift the list demographics. 25’ish should be the cut off.
9 of our premiership team were 28 and over, 10 if Adams had played, I don't think it matters as much now that we and Geelong have shown aging teams can be elite. I'd rather have Duggan for nothing than give up a first rounder for comparable talent at a younger age. We can always target youth other ways although that will be difficult given our picks, unrestricted FA is a free hit if you can talk them your way.

Duggan is a gun and would love to have him at the club.

I can’t help thinking we have a thread for this type of discussion already 🤔

stormskye great point you raise re “WHE’s $475k” and I’m pretty confident that average wage goes beyond $500k in 2025. I also don’t believe $3m is much of a war chest. With the ebb and flow of contract management across a list most clubs would open up that much space year to year.

That said Smith, Phillipou and Reid are the three I’d be going hard at. Smith to add pace around the contest, Phillipou will be a gun and is the only top rated player from his draft yet to extend and Reid is going to be gettable just like JHF was so get to the front of that queue!
Yes but I am talking about WHE's current and final year likely salary range. Nothing to do with 2025.

IMO teams hit a tipping point at which point you need to bring in quality youth and rebuild the core. And we are there.

Geelong have managed to do that and now have a fairly large contingent of young talent coming through, unlike us. You only have to look at the team they are rolling out today.

Free agents do cost something as well. Cap space. So it’s a case of weighing up that cap spend vs predicted output & longevity vs future opportunity cost.

All up, I don’t think spending reasonable $ on a player like Duggan, particularly at his age, is worth it.

Just trawled the lists of out of contract and free agency players again. Personally these are the names that are worth having a look and generally wouldn’t cost the world:

-Lachie sholl

-Archie Perkins (unlikely and expensive)

-Sam Sturt

-Tyson Stengle (UFA - free hit and would be awesome with Hill/Schultz)

-Max Holmes (possible, but expensive)

-Alex Davies

-Ned Moyle

-Bodhi Uwland

-Brayden George

-Will Phillips

-Bailey Scott

-Cameron Zurhaar

-Thomas Scully

-Noah Cumberland

-Matt Coulthard

-Jack Graham

-Charlie Clarke

-Bailey Smith (possible but fairly expensive)

-Rhylee West

-Buku Khamis

I purposely left off a few who I reckon are unattainable given our picks and/or the likelihood of them leaving (ie Phillipou/Logan McDonald/Rowbottom). Also there’s a bit of bias there in relation to a couple of my fav’s from their draft year (ie Charlie Clarke).

Not much from a key position perspective other than Thomas Scully unfortunately.

The ones who really interest me from our teams perspective (other than the obvious ones being Holmes/Smith) are Stengle (just an absolute free hit), Zurhaar (same as Stengle although RFA), Khamis, Graham, George, Phillips and Moyle.
Would love Ned Moyle - think he'll be a good #1 ruckman for years to come.

I think Buku might be hard now that he's getting regular games.

Bailey Scott would be a good get, but I think North rate him highly.

Bailey Scott is an interesting one. I think he is really underrated. From memory Champion Data have him really highly rated as a wingman.

He would be great on the other wing to Josh.

I reckon we’d be able to prize him out for a low 20’s pick.

Is Phillips worth having a crack at? How does he compare to Macrae and can they play in the same team?

Didn’t he play at Chargers with a few of our crew?
I probably wouldn’t bother because I think him and Finn are on par.

I seem to remember Hine being a big fan at draft time because Phillips was a player that would get himself contest to contest. Doesn’t seem to have pushed on with that at the next level and at times has really struggled to find the ball consistently at VFL level.

Roos fans were pretty disappointed with his VFL game on the weekend looking at their board.

He showed some decent signs in the second half of last year - but looks a bit vanilla.

Mitch Cleary is reporting that Billy Frampton has accepted a ten year, $10 million offer from the Sydney Swans. He will leave at year’s end on a heavily back-ended deal.

If we could get him at that price I would jump on it! Seems to have really solidified himself as a solid wing player - would probably come a boatload cheaper than Bailey Smith

We could probably secure an excess North midfielder given they have so many.

I wonder if we should pin a list of players we're (BigFooty posters) interested in...?
Would this be possible or are we going to end up with 1000+ names?
Maybe re-visit this list as FA/Trade week approaches (delete as they re-sign)?

McDonald
B Smith
Holmes
...
