So now it would be in our interest for a bid for Ashcroft to come later in the first round, as Brisbane would be more likely to have reasonable picks left over.

Pick 3 at the earliest a bid will come it seems. No later than pick 5

Well, I think there is a concern after next year. Don't you?

Nah

McGuane in plus all the delisted free agents available next year as well as any potential regular trades

We’ll be fine

My guess is we've agreed to an in-draft pick swap with Brisbane for pick 49 likely to be left over after they match Ashcroft bid and this is the first part of it.

Brisbane probably couldnt take both picks in so this part of it will have increased their points slightly. And then we'll increase them again by swapping two of our picks for 49.
Definitely a method to their madness. They have something planned with Lions, most likely.

Has to be. Otherwise we've traded 58 down as we can't take 66 into the draft.

I think we're locked into a pick swap with them after Ashcroft is matched.

What are we doing?

Excellent deal. 58 will be eaten by a bid so it’s a 1 pick slide for all intents and purposes and gives us potentially more trading collateral of draft night.

Why them though? Could also deal with essendon who could trade away pick 46

Thing is, we'd have to do it before 7pm on draft night as we can't take 4 picks into the draft.
Can't recall what time trades open, maybe around 4 or 5?

Why would we have done this trade?

We've actually traded down so Brisbane can jump up a couple of spots to increase their points slightly.

Essendon won't want to trade down. They don't need any extra points. If Kako gets a bid early, they'll match and have some decent picks left over. If he doesn't, they'll be trading out 28 and 31 with their future first to try to get an early pick and using later picks to match.

So we just lose the last Pick?

No we don’t. If we do a pick swap with our live picks after an Ashcroft bid, let’s say 52 and 55 for 49 for example, pick 66 then becomes live for us as it becomes our third pick.

Markov and Johnson aren't currently on the list so we technically can pretend we're going for a senior list of 38 even if we have no intention of it.

Oh. I just thought you couldn't go into the draft with more picks than list spots?

I don't think that's right. I think you forfeit them. And just get given an end of draft pick.

What did you think happens if you trade 2 live picks for 1 on draft night when you only have 3? Just forfeit a list spot for the year?

Not trying to be mean, just curious as to your line of thinking.

Pretty sure that’s not right. Otherwise this trade would have no benefit to us.

Yeah, you are given picks for what list spots you have at the end of the draft
I’m genuinely curious about this now, and trying to find the rules but having difficulty. It’s noteworthy that the draft order on the AFL website has been updated to show us currently holding pick 66 in addition to our other selections.

It would be awful from Brisbane's perspective if you were right. They would have just reduced matching points for their academy kid as pick 66 would become alive after matching Ashcroft. This they would have traded out points.

I'm confident it's part one of an in-draft trade with Brisbane, as they've just increased their matching points by shifting the last live pick they take into the draft up to 58. We've locked in an in-draft trade to move up a few spots after Ashcroft is matched.

We hold the later ones too up until the draft. Then they're ether. Brisbane wouldn't have delisted two rookies they're re-drafting if their picks came back to life when list spots appear, because they'll have multiple list spots after Ashcroft is matched.
