Opinion Paddy Dow, can you see a pathway for him to break into our best 22 or are we resigned to losing him?

What are Dow's chances of breaking into the best 22?

If we were to assume Dow was to take Kennedy’s spot… would we get more output with better midfield dynamic?

(I think we forget how space creating Dows handballs are)

Versatility is the key.

Kennedy can play as an inside mid and go forward and be very effective, can take a strong mark and kick goals. Crippa can play forward. Walsh and Cerra can play inside/outside.

Competition for midfield spots is tough, who would have thought 12 months ago we’d be lucky enough to gain 2 quality midfielders in Cerra and Hewett. Dow will need to add a few more strings to his bow to break into the midfield group...but at only 22 and in his fifth season I think he can.

Kennedy is a name that’s said with more reverence after his strong form in the preseason and first few rounds.

He has dropped off fairly significantly though.

If that was to happen...
I'd rather push Kennedy forward than to drop him...

That’s true about the marking. But I can’t recall Kennedy playing forward this year at all.

Happy to be wrong but I think he might be midfield or bench.

Hypothetically, which forward would you then drop to keep Kennedy in the side.

This is purely discussion as I think Kennedy is ‘the weakest link’ for dowy to replace

I don't get this, Kennedy has been huge for us. At the game on Sat night he was pivotal. His numbers back it up as well. Had a game-high 11 clearances, 24 disposals, 14 contested possessions and five tackles. You are not getting those sort of numbers plus the heat he takes from bigger bodies from Dow in a month of Sundays out of the center. I am a big Dow fan but let him build without pressure in the VFL. I would be pushing one of Cerra and Walsh wide rotating on a wing and play both Kennedy and Dow if Dow gets to where we need him to get to.

Dow looks to be developing into a strong inside mid but I've seen no great development in the rest of his game.

I suspect people have a vision of him bursting out of stoppages in the seniors but he's not even doing that in reserves. He is reading the drop well, has good synergy with Mirkov, has a quick first few steps, is good with his hands and strong in the contest.

He is a stoppage player and that's it. He applies no real pressure in general play, doesn't get back to support defence with any significance, isn't a link up player around the ground, isn't a dangerous forward.

Unless 2 of Cripps, Kennedy & Hewett are out, or one for an extended period, I don't anticipate we'll see Dow.

I think he will play senior footy and be a capable clearance mid next year. If Kennedy's stocks rise too high, I'd be happy for it to be at ours. If not, I'm sure he can add value to certain clubs but we're simply not one of them.

I wouldn't be shocked to see him at Richmond next year. His brother there, you've got Caddy retired, Meatball soft tissue injury prone, Cotchin most likely will retire, and who knows with Martin. He'll have ample opportunity there and without the pressure of being the Carlton Dow.

Are they going to get rid of Teague first?

That's a good question and probably the reason Dow is in the VFL...

If push comes to shove Newnes or Lob could make way, with Cerra or Walsh playing off the wing...

I'm surprised he got a gig in the first place.
Not sure it would only have been a 1 year contract, though. And it's probably not a great precedent to get rid of a coach for a player?
Teague did play him, so not sure the r'ship was strained that bad if at all that it couldn't be salvaged. Plus Teague won't be making as big a call here you'd think.

I have no idea, but here's my guess. Dow will be traded, probably for something like a Rd2 pick plus something like a swap of their future 3rd for our future 4th...
Given SPS went for pick 53 i am not sure Dow would go for any lower.

Reckon we probably only get a 3rd rounder for Dow if traded. Not great value but guys who arent playing in the ones 5 years in dont attract early picks no matter what pick they were themself. Maybe a late 2nd if we are very lucky and Dow absolutely blitzes VFL.

We've also gotta hope Weagles finish last, otherwise, he could just walk to Norf. Less likely to want to go to Perth you'd think.

Given he's out of contract will be much harder for us to bargain hard on a trade. I think you're probably right at a 3rd rounder.

True and even if we could bargain hard we probably wont. It seems to be an unwritten rule that if you arent playing a player and he finds somewhere that will give him opportunitty you facilitate that without much hassle.

I think Geelong would be a good fit. Went to school there and they dont have much young talent. They would be less likely to ream us too. I doubt he interests North. They have better young mids.

Could walk into the vice captaincy at the Eagles at this rate
